Job description

Domestic Abuse Behaviour Change Worker.

Working on the Open2Change Team.

Actual salary pro rata depending on qualifications £26,877 - £29,214 per year.

Full time/37hrs a week - 2-year fixed contact. Training will be provided.

With flexibility in the hours to include 2 evenings (11-7) a week to meets client’s needs.

The Open2Change team provide early intervention and prevention support to those who recognise and want to change their abusive behaviour. By exploring current or historic behaviour, Behaviour Change Workers enable positive change in people who use abusive or unhealthy behaviours to a partner, former partner or family member.

Delivering a one-to-one prevention programme to perpetrators, aiming to make positive change and prevent domestic abuse. Focusing on a whole family approach allows us to provide support to both perpetrator and victim. We aim to reduce repeat victimisation through reducing harmful behaviours.

Delivering a service that is culturally flexible, appropriate, accessible and equitable to people of all ages, genders, ethnicities abilities and sexual orientations, in addition to those from more deprived backgrounds and those with multiple, complex needs.

You will be required to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service outside normal working hours.

Main Duties:

· Provide specialist advice and support for those who abuse others in a domestic setting, helping them to:

. Identify their unhealthy/abusive behaviour patterns;

.Identifying wider factors impacting on the presenting situation (e.g. substance misuse, child emotional wellbeing, mental health and safeguarding) and work collaboratively with appropriate agencies to deliver an integrated, coordinated and effective family-based response.

. Understand the impact this abuse has on others, victims, children, and family members

· Identify and assess the risks and needs of individuals who are abusive in a relationship or other domestic setting.

· Follow the escalation policy as required e.g. adult safeguarding/child safeguarding.

· Advocate for individuals who need to address their abusive behaviour.

· Understand the role of all relevant statutory and non-statutory services available to those who are abusive and how your role fits into them, adopting a trauma informed approach.

· Understand multi-agency partnership structures and work within a multi-agency setting which may include participation at the MARAC and other professional meetings.

· To work closely with the Partner Link Worker, IDVAs and CYP team (if appropriate) to ensure safety and support for the whole family.

· Establish positive, proactive, and innovative working relationships with external services and partner agencies across Swindon.

· Advise other members of SDASS staff and those from partner agencies on the programme and related issues.

· Ensure that all equality issues are considered when offering advice and support.

· Ensure support provided is accessible to clients in terms of location and times.

· Be proactive with your line manager in carrying out regular case reviews based on a review of risk and abuse

· Feedback into action planning to further progress, signpost, or closed cases.

· Maintain accurate and confidential case management records and databases and contribute to monitoring information for the service.

· Respect and value the diversity of the community in which the services work within and recognise the needs and concerns of a diverse range of people ensuring the service is accessible to all.

· Remain up-to-date and compliant with all organisational procedures policies and professional codes of conduct and uphold standards of best practice.

· Utilise evaluation and monitoring systems to ensure high standards of service are consistently achieved.

General Responsibilities:

  • Prepare reports for management as requested.
  • Comply with data protection legislation, confidentiality and information sharing policy and procedures and all legislation connected to your work.
  • Support colleagues and partner agencies, through awareness raising and institutional advocacy, to provide the best possible service for those who are abusive within a family setting.
  • Work at all times in accordance with the requirements of the Lone Working Policy and Procedure.
  • Attend and contribute to team meetings.
  • Contribute to effective team working with a flexible and pro-active approach, including cover for other team members’ holidays and sickness.
  • To engage in supervision, annual appraisal, and induction training
  • Promote and raise awareness of this service.

The duties of the post may change and develop over time in response to service and organisational development. Such development will be monitored in conjunction with senior staff and will be reflected as necessary in the aims and objectives of the post.

Person Specification

Experience:

  • Previous experience of working with perpetrators of domestic abuse or addressing offending behaviours
  • Previous experience of working one-to-one with clients including managing a caseload whilst regularly assessing own safety
  • Experience of providing emotional and practical support, of undertaking risk and needs assessments, and support planning
  • Experience of partnership working and of maintaining excellent working relationships with a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience of effectively and appropriately raising Safeguarding issues as necessary
  • Current or previous experience of working within an offender management role is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience in identifying and effectively managing risks posed by and to individuals.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of domestic abuse and its impact on victims and their children. This will include an understanding of physical, emotional, psychological, financial, and sexual abuse, with knowledge of honour- based abuse, forced marriage and female genital mutilation.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding practice, procedures, and legislation.
  • A good understanding of the importance of confidentiality, GDPR, and safeguarding.
  • Good understanding of the criminal and civil justice system.
  • An understanding of welfare benefits, housing, education & training, immigration, debt, and money management.
  • An understanding of the complexities that come with working with perpetrators
  • Excellent listening and communication skills with a wide range of people of all ages and background
  • Evidence of the ability to build and develop supportive relationships while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Ability to work in partnership, network, influence, problem solve, overcome barriers and apply solution focused approaches
  • The ability to work well within a team and under own initiative and of maintaining professional boundaries with clients.
  • A flexible, adaptable, proactive approach and a good ability to prioritise work
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills when dealing with a wide range of people and strategic and statutory agencies.
  • Good time & project management skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure and to deadlines
  • Ability to maintain up-to-date and accurate records and individual support plans an adhere to policy and procedures
  • Ability to record and complete data sheets and reports for statistical analysis.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook software

· Full UK driving licence and access to own transport is desirable for this post.

· This post will be subject to an enhanced DBS check

  • Post is contracted until March 2028
