Educators and facilitators wanted to help East London Waterworks Park deliver its environmental learning goals.
East London Waterworks Park is a volunteer-led charity that has won a 2024 New London Architecture award and raised £2m towards buying land from the Department for Education to transform the 14-acre Thames Water Depot on Lea Bridge Road on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney, into a new biodiverse park with natural swimming ponds, forest schools and community spaces.
We are looking for educator and facilitator volunteers to participate in our community-led working group, who are collaborating with schools, universities and youth groups that help the design of the park.
Examples of projects are:
- collaborating on nature walk activities for schools
- supporting university students interviewing teachers
- creating lesson plans to co-design the park.
Schools, universities and youth groups we've collaborated with include:

This will in turn provide a sense of stewardship over the land once the park is created and student's ideas have been built into the park.
Creating learning projects with educational institutions will also help our charity with the strategy to buy the land through showing the value of our environmental education programme before we create the park.

Lead the Board of Via, the charity delivering vital substance use, mental health and well-being services across the UK, and help provide high-quality, person-centred care to the people and communities affected.
Location: Flexible (Via has services across London, NW England and SW England)
Closing date: Tuesday 27th May
Who we are.
Via is an exceptional charity that puts people at the heart of everything we do. Over three decades, we’ve evolved from our origins as Westminster Drug Project, with a new now award-winning name and brand, into a dynamic, multi-service organisation delivering vital support across substance use, mental health, employment, sexual health, smoking cessation and youth services. With a turnover of £36m for 24/25 and remarkable growth of over a third in 2023/24, we’re now supporting over 12,500 service users annually across an expanding geographical footprint from London to Gloucestershire.
Our commitment to excellence and innovation is evident in our industry-leading services, which consistently perform significantly above the national average. We’re particularly proud to be pioneering the development of the UK’s first women-only detox facility, demonstrating our commitment to addressing crucial gaps in service provision.
Our Approach Makes Us Different
At Via, we believe in doing things differently. This starts with our commitment to staff well-being, including up to six months of full sick pay – a policy that exemplifies our trust in our people and our understanding that supporting our staff enables them to better support our service users. We achieved Investors in People Gold certification and were nominated for UK Employer of the Year and Third Sector Employer of the Year at the Investors in People Awards 2024, recognising our dedication to creating an outstanding workplace culture.
Our active Diversity, Equity and Inclusion group drives real organisational change, ensuring our services are accessible and effective for all communities. These aren’t just initiatives – they’re expressions of our core values: Care, Be Human, and Do the Right Thing, which guides everything we do.
The opportunity.
As we have experienced growth and are launching our new strategy, we had new Trustees join our Board as others have come to the end of their terms. As our current Chair, Yasmin Batliwala MBE comes to the end of her term later this year, we are looking to appoint a new Chair.

- An Inclusive Champion committed to fostering diversity that reflects the communities we serve, promoting DEI training and growth, and holding staff and trustees accountable to these practices.
- A Relationship Builder with excellent interpersonal skills and diplomatic tact. You’ll develop a strong working relationship with the Chief Executive, maintain connections with key stakeholders, and represent Via as an effective ambassador.
- A Collaborative Leader who can bring people together, foster a team environment, and work in partnership with our board and team to drive our ambitious strategy.
Our Commitment to Inclusion
Diversity in governance isn’t just a goal for Via – it’s a necessity. Our services support people from every part of society, and we want our Board to reflect this diversity. We actively encourage applications from people with lived experience of addiction/recovery (whether personal or as family members/carers), and people from communities currently underrepresented at board level.

We recognise that our Governance plays a vital role in our success as we strive for continuous improvement. As such, we now seek to appoint a new Governor to join our board. We welcome applications from candidates who will bring new expertise, differing perspectives and robust challenge. We look forward to appointing a candidate who can help ensure that we continue to deliver the very best we can for our students, people and the communities we serve.
Who we are.
In March 2022, we were graded as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, a standard we have maintained for over a decade, making us one of only a handful of colleges across the country that have been able to do so. We are very proud of this as a college and will continue to strive for excellence in every way to ensure we maintain the high-quality learning experience that we provide for our students.
We deliver exceptional teaching and learning with a purpose to ensure that all our students achieve their own personal aims, progress onto work or higher education, and that they have a great time doing so. In addition to this, we feel proud of the opportunities we provide for our staff who, each year, report high levels of satisfaction whilst working with us. We are proud too, of the relationships and reputation we have across the local area, with the people, the businesses and the communities of Barnsley.
We pride ourselves on offering a diverse provision and work in partnership with local stakeholders to ensure that this meets local needs, therefore ensuring that our students will have opportunities to progress at the end of their courses. This provision extends across areas such as performing arts, digital and media, horticulture, travel & tourism, engineering and construction. Our campuses offer purpose-built settings, ensuring our students learn in industry standard facilities and within an environment that reflects their future workplaces. We are also very proud to be a part of the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology, where we work in partnership with other local providers to deliver world-class technical education and training.
About the role.
The Board of Governors and the leadership team work very closely to ensure the college continues to realise success and retain strong financial health. Governors are responsible for setting the overall direction and culture of the college, working alongside the executive team to develop the long-term organisational strategy and to review progress being made against this.
Our board is made up of a diverse range of experienced professionals who each bring their expertise and passion to offer support, advice and scrutiny to our senior leaders so that we can continue working towards our vision, in line with our strategic priorities.
Who we are looking for.
As we look to further strengthen our board, we now seek to welcome a new member to join us. Candidates for this role will use their expertise, experience and knowledge to contribute to the college and support out senior leaders as a critical friend, offering support, scrutiny and challenge to the board, whilst bringing their own personal experiences and perspectives to our decision making.
Candidates will have a passion for education and an appreciation for the impacts we have within our local communities. You will be committed to the college and its values and be able to collaborate with our team as we work together to achieve shared goals and ambitions.
Following a recent skills audit of our board, we welcome interest from candidates who have experience and expertise in the following areas:
- Finance (Qualified Accountant)
- IT/Cyber Security/Data
- Educational Standards
- Business Development/Grant Funding
This is a fantastic opportunity to join an outstanding further educational provider, supporting them as they continue to strive for excellence.

All board meetings are face to face whilst it is possible to join committees online. Governors will be expected to dedicate between 10-12 hours per month to their role.
