This is an exciting position for an exceptional person with fundraising, campaigning, policy, communications and management/leadership experience to temporarily direct one of the UK’s leading human rights NGOs. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to oversee high-impact civil liberties campaigns to achieve real change and manage a high-performing multi-disciplinary team to further privacy, free expression and data protection rights in the United Kingdom. Importantly, you’ll be an experienced fundraiser, responsible for leading our grants and major giving to maintain Big Brother Watch’s income growth, and have experience with financial reporting.

You’ll have a diverse skill-set enabling you to line manage our Advocacy Manager, Digital Communications Manager and Head of Research and Investigations. An ideal candidate will also be responsible for leading the development of policy positions on new and emerging issues alongside our talented team.

You may also share spokesperson responsibilities, taking up our role as a recognised voice on civil liberties matters in the national media, though this is not essential.

The start and end of the position will include comprehensive handover periods with the current Director, and may include a period of co-working full time with the current Director.

We recognise that applicants may not have all the skills relevant to this role, or policy expertise across all of our key campaign areas. However, if you are a committed and experienced civil liberties advocate with significant fundraising and management experience, we would like to hear from you.

About you

We’re looking for highly experienced professional with a track record of NGO fundraising and management with a demonstrable passion for protecting civil liberties, especially privacy and freedom of expression. Ideally, you’ll have a high level of experience of or interest in working on new and emerging technologies.

Importantly, you’ll have excellent political judgement. You’ll have strong knowledge of British politics, a strong network of relevant contacts and significant experience both fundraising and advocating for change.

You’ll have an entrepreneurial approach, always identifying opportunities to boost Big Brother Watch’s campaigns, resources and reputation. The ideal candidate will appreciate the importance of winning in the court of public opinion in order to win in parliament, and have the skills to do both.

You’ll be a brilliant communicator internally and externally, able to simplify complex technology issues and convey powerful messages whether in campaign slogans or in interviews as a Big Brother Watch spokesperson.

You’ll be at ease working on a strictly non-partisan, cross-party basis and grounding our campaigns and communications strategies in human rights and liberal principles. You’ll also embody our principles of equality, respect and accountability.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Fundraising

• Seeking fundraising opportunities and writing fundraising applications

• Reporting to funders, including trusts/grants and individual donors

Management and finances

• Day to day operational management of the office, ensuring policies are upheld

• Management of the Advocacy Manager, including overseeing the development of quarterly campaign plans and evaluations across our priority areas

• Management of the Digital Communications Officer and our public communications strategy/scheduling, encompassing digital fundraising

• Management of the Head of Research and Investigations, ensuring ongoing production of high-quality research, investigations and reports to support priority campaign areas

• Ensuring the highest level of quality of all campaigns, communications and research output

• Manage staff performance and development, and ensure wellbeing

• Financial management of the organisation, liaising with our accountants, with quarterly financial reporting to the Board of Directors, and maintenance of our annual budget

Advocacy

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

• Successful experience (2y+) fundraising from trusts and individual donors for a non-profit/NGO

• Experience of budget management and financial reporting, particularly in a non-profit context

To support our mission we are recruiting a Communications and Fundraising Officer to help deliver on our ambitious growth plans to reach 2 million people by 2030. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated person with strong communication and interpersonal skills, who can plan and create compelling communications to increase awareness of our work and engage new and existing supporters. Roles and Responsibilities

The role will be responsible for proactive and reactive media relations; effective engagement on social media; developing engaging content for our website; supporting on Calls for Evidence and drafting copy for marketing materials, including our e-newsletter. Are you our new Digital Communications Officer?

We are looking for a creative social media native who is comfortable not only with presenting UWC to different audiences but also collaborating and supporting our different stakeholders in doing so. You will join the Communications and Engagement Team at the UWC International Office (UWCIO) which consists of six people and report to the Digital Communications Manager.

As a Digital Communications Officer, you will create, develop and deliver content across all UWC International’s social media channels in line with our social media strategy and lead on sourcing or creating the relevant, required reporting to demonstrate engagement and impact. You will also support UWC’s truly global network of volunteers through digital resources, templates and training. In doing so, you will use your digital communications skills for the better, contributing to the success of the movement and supporting young people to access transformational educational opportunities they would otherwise not have dreamt of.

Part of the larger Advancement Team at UWC International, the Communications and Engagement Team provides the UWC movement with strategic leadership, support and advice in the area of internal and external communication, PR, promotion, marketing, crisis communications, alumni and wider community engagement, and partnerships with other organisations. The Team has a coordination and support function for teams across the UWC International Office, as well as other UWC stakeholders globally, such as UWC schools, colleges, national committees and governance bodies. Alongside your business-as-usual tasks, you will support the Digital Communications Manager in coordinating with the advancement and admissions teams at each of the 18 UWC schools to run ad-hoc campaigns and manage external stakeholders and partners.

The UWC International Office serves as the operational arm of UWC International, a UK-registered and Germany-registered charity, and stands as a pivotal entity within the UWC movement. Positioned in central London and Berlin, it collaborates extensively with stakeholders across the UWC spectrum, actively engages a robust alumni community comprising more than 60,000 members, and fulfils essential functions for UWC International's governance bodies. Senior Media Officer

About the Team:
To support an exciting and busy time in the WaterAid UK communications team, we are seeking an experienced Senior Press Officer to join our team on a 12 month contract. This role will involve close collaboration with our UK teams, country and regional offices, as well as managing relationships with external partners and stakeholders.
This is a full-time, Monday to Friday role. You will be expected to take part in our out of hours press office rota approx. every 8 weeks, and international may be required from time to time.

About the Role:
You will ideally have newsroom or busy press office or agency experience, work well under pressure, and be full of creative media ideas. As a news driven, creative and ambitious Senior Media Officer, you will lead on a wide range of media activities including timely statements, ground-breaking research reports, fundraising appeals and events, and key policy and advocacy moments.  
 
You will also work on projects with celebrity ambassadors, corporate partners and staff from across WaterAid's global federation - all in support of WaterAid's mission to change normal for millions of people living without water, decent toilets and good hygiene so they can unlock their potential, break free from poverty and change their lives for good. 
 
You will drive, develop and implement proactive and reactive media strategies, use your warm media contacts and build new contacts to achieve organisational communications objectives, including increasing awareness of the global water and sanitation crisis as well as our work around the world and our policy, fundraising and campaigning activities.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Write audience centric media strategies for advocacy research and reports and campaigns, with political and public stakeholders in mind.  
• Build and ensure effective media relations by establishing and nurturing relationships with key journalists and media outlets, maintaining media lists using relevant media databases.    
• Ensure a responsive, agile news desk and respond to enquiries on the key issues we work on.  
• Draft and distribute first class media materials, including press releases, media messages, statements, op-eds and thought leadership pieces, and lines against enquiry. 
• Integrate media activity across communications and the wider communications and fundraising directorate to ensure media work is impactful and supports wider strategic objectives.  
• Advise WaterAid staff up to the Chief Executive using your media expertise. 
• Build on and maintain excellent relationships with teams across the organisation and in countries where we work. 
• Help drive WaterAid's online media work and engage with bloggers, online journalists and social media influencers. 
• Evaluate and report back on key campaigns to the team and rest of the organisation 
• Brief journalists on and off the record, arrange radio and TV interviews where necessary and brief staff in preparation. 
• Join the 24/7 on-call rota 

About You:

• Proven experience in media relations, working in a busy press office, agency or as a journalist.
• Experience of working in a large, matrix organisation 
• Experience of liaising with journalists of all levels 
• Strong understanding of the UK and global media landscape, with an excellent nose for a story and established relationships with key journalists and media outlets for major UK and global titles. 
• Proven experience in launching policy and research reports and data-driven stories to the media 
• Proven experience on working on public engagement and supporter focused media  
• Excellent command of written English and editing skills, with the ability to craft compelling media materials and media messages at the highest quality 
• Experience in developing and executing media strategies and securing impactful coverage.  
• To have initiative, deadline driven, strong project management skills, able to work autonomously while contributing to a high performing team 
• Willing to travel within and outside of the UK infrequently on travel to further media objectives. 
• Creativity and tenacity. 
• Ability to handle multiple projects and a variety of work simultaneously

Although not essential, we also prefer you to have:

• Experience running events with media audiences or attendance, including organising press events/press conferences. 
• Experience of working on international issues including development, rights or humanitarian.

What you’ll be doing

• The post holder will help advance Ukie’s policy work on aspects of UK and international policy impacting the games and interactive entertainment industry through:
• Monitoring policy changes and providing in-depth policy analysis, research, and reports for internal stakeholders.
• Relationship building and engagement with Ukie members and wider sector stakeholders, including attendance at internal and external stakeholder meetings and coalition industry groups.
• Support the Senior Policy Manager in research for Ukie’s external consultation responses, co-ordinating with members and facilitating internal forums for discussions on particular issues.
• Support in organising events and engagement with policy makers within Whitehall, Westminster, the Devolved Governments and with regional, combined and local authorities as well as with our global partners in the EU, US and further afield. 
• Assisting the policy and research teams with major public affairs projects and campaigns according to the UKIEs internal strategy and drawing on Ukie’s internal data and external partners where appropriate.
• Supporting and promoting Ukie at external political meetings, including our bi-annual Westminster Games Week.
• Support in raising the profile of Ukie and its significant policy priorities through external communications in partnership with the Ukie campaigns team, and through public scrutiny such as the use of written parliamentary questions.
• Acting as the lead point of contact for the APPG on Video Games and Esports to which Ukie acts as the secretariat and taking responsibility for liaising with its members.
• Lead on external policy communications such as the Ukie Policy Byte, the bi-weekly political newsletter, with support from Senior Policy Manager and Head of Policy where necessary.
• Be responsible for the team administration of internal stakeholder meetings, including sending out invites, taking minutes and preparing relevant material as well as maintaining up to date email lists of all stakeholders.

Relationship Management

• Develop and maintain relationships with games industry member businesses and a wide range of external bodies; including partner organisations, government officials and other trade bodies.
• Support the Senior Policy Manager and Head of Policy in the management of Ukie’s internal stakeholder groups – including Ukie’s policy group and its various working sub groups.
• Maintain stakeholder engagement trackers and act as a point of contact for external engagement with Parliamentarians, regional politicians and their offices.
• Support the Head of Policy and Chief Executive in any external engagements.
• Support the policy team and wider Senior Management team with other reasonable tasks as required

 Qualifications and experience required for this role 

Qualified by experience. You don’t need to hold a degree to apply for this role, but experience of working in a policy facing role, public affairs agency or regulatory environment would be advantageous. On-the-job training will be provided via Ukie or external providers where appropriate.

Hours of Work 

• Monday to Friday – 9.00am to 5.30pm
• Expectation that some evening and weekend work may be required to attend or run Ukie events as the business requires. 

This role profile is not exhaustive; working as part of a small and dynamic team, there will be an opportunity to tailor the role to your interests and ambitions in agreement with the Senior Policy and Public Affairs Manager and Head of Policy and Public Affairs.

There is also the expectation that you will be flexible to help the wider organisation and its other teams in accordance with its strategic priorities where necessary, as directed by the Head of Policy or Chief Executive where appropriate.
