At our vibrant community centre in Halifax, we welcome refugees and people seeking asylum. Working across Calderdale with partners, we give people the practical support they need to rebuild their lives with dignity, and we offer a wide range of activities that help them feel happier and more connected.
We are a community of 22 staff (15 full-time equivalent), 150 volunteers, and over a thousand Centre Members from 86 countries. Our ‘Centre Members’ are people seeking sanctuary in Calderdale. 33% of our staff and trustees and 50% of our volunteers have lived experience of the asylum system; their insights and experiences shape what we do.

The role - your main responsibilities
- Provide clear leadership and strategic direction for the whole organisation, in collaboration with the Board of trustees, and with a spirit of positivity and possibility.
- Oversee the effective delivery of a diverse range of services, including immigration and asylum advice and a wide range of support and activities.
- Ensure the financial sustainability of the organisation including budgeting, monitoring and keeping the organisation well-funded and resourced.
- Work collaboratively, compassionately and effectively with trustees, staff, volunteers, Centre Members to inspire and lead an inclusive and enabling culture; including managing staff and overseeing all key processes and policies.
- Model our values of sanctuary, diversity, community, collaboration and growth and deliver on our purpose to provide practical support and challenge injustice.
- Engage with our Centre Members and amplify their voices at all times.
- Manage effective partnerships with voluntary and statutory organisations, funders and donors locally, regionally and nationally.
- Ensure that the work of St Augustine’s conforms to all legal, compliance, regulatory, charitable and funding requirements.

About the role:
This role sits within our busy legal team and will be the legal business partner for the Motor Neuron Disease and Global Health Translational Challenges (“TCs”) within LifeArc providing specialist legal support on a wide range of grant funded projects and strategic collaborations. The role will support on all legal aspects of the structuring and execution of projects and will advise on a range of commercial, charity law, intellectual property and life science and medical research-related legal matters.
You will be a professional advisor and counsel to senior leadership and operational staff, especially the Head and senior members of the Partnerships Team (including BD Project Leads) and the TC Leaders, and will work in cross-functional teams to find solutions for delivering strategic projects.
You will work closely with the contract managers in the Legal team to coordinate and manage the contractual needs of the organisation, including delegation and supervision and generally being a collegiate member of the Legal team providing advice, training and supervision to both colleagues in the team and across the organisation.
About you:
You will be responsible for the following:
- Being a strategic legal business partner to the Motor Neuron Diseases (“MND”) and Global Health (“GH”) Translational Challenges, proactively seeking out information to anticipate and deliver all relevant legal support.
- Developing strategies for delivering that support, including triage and delegation within the Legal team.
- Setting up new collaborations, grant funding initiatives, licences and other contractual arrangements by advising on the structure of these projects and by drafting and negotiating agreements.
- Advising and supporting the Partnerships team on existing relationships to manage LifeArc’s existing funding projects and collaboration and LifeArc’s and others’ technologies, platforms and IP.
- Leading and supporting Legal team initiatives, including training to the business and embedding new IT assets.
- Obtaining and pragmatically applying advice from external counsel, as appropriate.
- Managing competing priorities whilst balancing the needs of the team and the organisation.
- Providing occasional support to other parts of the organisation, including the Science and Procurement teams.
- Developing and applying an understanding of relevant aspects of charity law and Data Protection law to advise the business and mitigate related risks.
- Advising on developments in legislation and legal practice as they impact commercial, IP and other activities in LifeArc; as appropriate, cascade that information into the organisation.
Skills and Education:
- Significant post qualification experience gained in Intellectual Property and commercial law.
- A solicitor or barrister qualified to practice law in England and Wales.
- Experience advising on life sciences and/or medical research matters also advantageous.
- Highly proficient at drafting and negotiating complex contracts.
- Experience of charity law and/or working with charity or not-for-profit clients highly advantageous.

You’ll support and guide your team by setting performance goals, providing constructive feedback, conducting evaluations, and ensure their wellbeing. You’ll also identify and implement process improvements to boost efficiency and elevate the customer experience.
Taking ownership of the team’s performance, you’ll ensure they consistently meet and exceed KPIs and SLAs, as well as customer expectations. You’ll drive improvement by turning insights into actionable strategies, while being responsible for the team maintaining high standards of data accuracy and quality. You will also assist the Customer Service Manager in managing the wider team’s performance to meet or exceed targets and SLAs, as well as continuously improving your own performance. About you
You have a proven track record in customer service leadership, ideally within a contact centre environment. You’re experienced at setting performance goals, offering constructive feedback, conducting evaluations, and ensuring your team’s wellbeing. Your experience includes handling both inbound and outbound calls, implementing and monitoring KPIs, and effectively managing complaints.
To excel in this role, you should have:
- Outstanding IT skills, especially Microsoft Office, and familiarity with CRM systems and customer service software. Experience using a Helpdesk ticketing systems would be highly advantageous.
- A strong understanding of contact centre best practices, tools, performance metrics, and KPIs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including a great phone manner and strong presentation skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail, strong administrative and time management skills, and a proactive, solution-focused approach.
- Experience in conducting effective team meetings, delivering impactful updates, inspiring and motivating team members, and securing enthusiastic buy-in for changes and new initiatives.
Working arrangements
This is a 18 month fixed contract covering a secondment.
Working hours are between 09:00am – 07:00pm, subject to business needs. Normal working hours are 09:00am to 05:00pm - Monday to Friday with flexibility to work Saturdays and 11:00am - 07:00pm during peak event season.

What will my main dutires be?

Responsibilities and Person Specification:
We are recruiting for two Generalist Advisers - one permanent and one fixed term contract for 12 months. The roles are an integral part of the day-to-day delivery of our Advice and Support Service, which has been re-shaped and went live in the summer of 2024. The service is targeted at older people in or facing financial hardship, and provides information, advice and follow up support to older people, their friends, family and professionals.
As a Generalist Adviser you will be responsible for providing advice and support during calls received through the duty line, pre-booked appointments and short term casework.
You should have knowledge and experience of advising on a wide range of topics, including Welfare Benefits, Housing and Social Care. You should have experience of working within an advice setting and advice supervision framework such as the AQS framework. You will have a warm, supportive and person-centred approach, working alongside individuals in a holistic manner.

The Crisis Centre is one of the 5 crisis services under our Nightlight brand we provide to residents in Hertfordshire:
- Crisis Centre – 24/7, 365 days a year

- Crisis Cafes providing drop in support – 365 days a year, 7pm to 1am
- Daylight – short term, outreach support
- A&E Crisis Support in Watford and Lister Hospitals (in partnership with Mid Herts Mind)
This role is leading a team of coordinators and support workers to provide excellent support within a small 4 bed crisis centre in Hemel Hempstead, which is a short stay provision, usually 3 or 4 nights, to provide;
- emotional support
- support to develop coping strategies, support plans and safety plans
- ensuring robust discharge plans in place for on-going support
Key Accountabilities
- On occasion, provide emotional support, advice, signposting, assessing risk, support planning for clients in mental health crisis often where risks are significant.
- Overseeing and ensuring the delivery of appropriate needs and risk assessments and support planning for clients.
- Liaise with statutory agencies to ensure appropriate intervention is obtained.
- Organising a rota to ensure appropriate service cover is in place at all times across the Nightlight Crisis Centre provision.
- Contribute to an on-call service, on rotational basis, usually every 8 weeks, taking calls outside of 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday providing staff support.
- Representing Nightlight and wider HMN at external meetings, and network locally to develop contacts, services and raise Herts Mind Network’s profile.
- Manage budgets, expenses, payroll as well as facilities needed for the centre
- Supporting the Crisis manager with developing and ensuring ongoing positive relationship with external NHS, local authority and emergency services including Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Teams, Single Point of Access, Safeguarding Out of Hours Service, Mental Health Liaison Teams, Adult Community Mental Health Services etc.
- Provide management support to Crisis Centre Coordinators and support the Crisis Manager in ensuring practice within the service is safe, effective and person centred, as well as supporting the implementation of strategic service plans.
