Be trained to support young primary school children in numeracy, and help them to attain interest, confidence, and skills which will put them on a path to achieving their educational potential.
What will I be doing?
Numeracy, like literacy, is a vital life skill, but many children fall behind.
Following training, you will work one-to-one with 6 to 8 year olds in a local state primary school to help them improve their confidence, enjoyment, and skills in maths. The school will select appropriate children who are behind in maths and likely to respond well to individual support.
Sessions are weekly, in school time, at a fixed time to be agreed between you and the school. Volunteers work one-to-one with each child for up to half an hour, normally with three children consecutively, for a total of about an hour and a half.
At each session, using games and other creative activities, support the child in learning or improving skills and gaining confidence in their own ability. The role is very much about helping the child learn, rather than you teaching.
Our Mentors (current or former teachers also volunteering with us) will provide you with direct support to help you plan sessions.
Commitment
We ask volunteers to commit to a weekly session in school for the full school year. (Recognising that you will have to miss occasional weeks.)
What impact will this have?
You will be helping improve the educational and life chances of the children you work with. A child who is behind in maths aged 6 often develops a dislike for the subject and a belief that "I can't do maths" which can stay with them forever. Helping the child acquire skills and confidence can let them not just engage better with maths but can improve their whole attitude to education, giving them better chances in life.
Over half the children we work with are "disadvantaged" in terms of being on pupil premium or having family difficulties You will be giving these children the support that is normal for other children.
You will not change the life of every child, but the experience of having a purposeful one-to-one relationship with a considerate adult from outside their family will be transformative for some children.
By helping to improve the performance of individual children, you are saving the teacher from having to devote so much time in class to them. This lets the teacher involve the whole class in better-received lessons, improving the educational experience for all the children.
What will I get out of it?
Training
Support through the year
Being active in your local community and meeting new people
Working with young children is (usually) fun and rewarding
The great shared achievement when the child "gets it"
Some of our volunteers have gone on to a career in teaching.
We welcome - and we have - volunteers from a wide variety of ethnicities and backgrounds, reflecting the diversity of London. We will do our best to accommodate those with disabilities or access needs.
We support primary school children in numeracy to help them achieve their educational and life potential.

The People’s Center for Environment and Culture
The People's Center for Environment and Culture is a community-driven research and capacity-building organization that leverages grassroots expertise and institutional partnerships to address environmental and cultural challenges in a collaborative and impactful way.
Some of the key problems the People Center is addressing include:
Lack of Community-Driven Research:
- Much academic and institutional research is conducted in a top-down manner, without meaningful input from the communities being studied.
- This results in research that may not accurately reflect or address the real-world challenges faced by community members.
Inaccessibility of Resources and Funding:
- Smaller nonprofits and community organizations often lack the capacity and resources to navigate complex funding and administrative processes.
- This prevents them from accessing grants, partnerships, and other support that could significantly boost their impact.
Uneven Power Dynamics:
- Historically, large institutions like universities have held significant power and influence over community-based initiatives.
- This can lead to a lack of true collaboration and community ownership over research and programs.
Grassroots Community Research:
- Conduct research that is grounded in the needs and perspectives of the local community, rather than a top-down, academic approach.
- Leverage the People Center's deep community connections and grassroots expertise to inform and guide research initiatives.
- Position the People Center as a trusted partner for community-based research, not just an academic institution.
Collaborative Partnerships with Institutions:
- Seek partnerships not just with universities, but also with other large institutions like hospital systems, government agencies, etc.
- Leverage these institutional partnerships to amplify the impact of the People Center's grassroots community research.
- Ensure the research and resources generated through these collaborations directly benefit the local community.
Capacity Building for Community Organizations:
- Provide fiscal sponsorship and administrative support to empower smaller nonprofits and community groups.
- Enable these organizations to focus on their core mission and programming by handling back-office tasks.
- Foster a collaborative network where community partners can share resources and expertise.
Join the People's Center for Environment and Culture and be part of a grassroots movement to amplify community voices and drive positive change. As a volunteer, you'll contribute your skills and passion to collaborative research projects, community events, and capacity-building initiatives that empower local organizations. Together, we'll bridge the gap between institutional resources and on-the-ground needs, creating a more equitable and sustainable future. Sign up today and make a real difference in your community.

You could occasionally help on specific projects, or take a leading role in shaping our strategy and priorities. You don’t need to be an expert, and you’ll get lots of support to grow into your role. Whatever that role is, in partnership with our staff team, you’ll be helping to shape how we help young people develop skills for life. If you’re still reading, then you obviously have an interest in what our young people take part in – so we would love to hear from you.
We want to make sure you feel supported, empowered, and that you enjoy your time volunteering beyond your local community, at a UK level. You’ll be part of a friendly team of volunteers and staff members who will support you in your role. We will cover your expenses (all travel and out of pocket expenses associated with the role, according to the expenses policy) and support any other adjustments we can make to enable you to volunteer with us.
The Roles
Here’s a bit more about the different roles we have to offer:
- UK Programme Adventure Team Leader
Focussed on leading on the continuous development and deployment of our adventurous programme content and support delivery of adventurous and nights away activities in Scouting, in partnership with the Senior Programme Managers and National Safety Manager. You will shape our programme content so that more young people realise the outcomes in our Theory of Change, and inform what else we should be providing to meet our strategic goals.
- UK Programme Adventure Team Members
Focused on supporting the adventurous areas of programme, you may be involved in the continuous development of our adventurous programme, advising on specific technical aspects or supporting local volunteers to deliver the adventurous programme; or a mixture of all of the above. We are particularly looking for individuals with depth of experience delivering adventurous activities, the Nights Away and Adventurous Activity Schemes and national assessors.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
