Could you be our next Trustee?
Every hour, two people are diagnosed with Parkinson’s. In fact, it’s the fastest growing neurological condition in the world.
Parkinson’s doesn’t discriminate. Anyone can get it.
Despite this, evidence suggests where you live, your income, ethnicity or gender can impact when you’re diagnosed and the support and services you can access.
We want to change that. We can and must do more. We want to remove barriers so that everyone in our community can access the right support and services, tailored to their needs.
To do this, we are building a diverse and inclusive board that reflects the community we serve. By having a diverse network of people working right across the charity we’re more likely to make breakthroughs that change the lives of people with Parkinson’s.
In the last 50 years, we’ve invested more than £120 million in cutting-edge research to uncover the causes of Parkinson’s. We believe we’re close to finding a solution. But to get there, we need more people like you!
What you’ll do
Guided by the Parkinson’s community, we’ve shaped our strategy ‘Every Parkinson’s Journey’ for 2023 to 2026. Our strategic aims are focused on improving access to health and care; improving our community offer and continuing with our groundbreaking research.
We're a growing organisation with 605 employees, 4000 volunteers and a projected income of £43m. The Board of Trustees and its committees govern the charity with diligence and enthusiasm and make sure we're financially stable, well-run, and delivering what the Parkinson's community really needs.
Our trustees and independent committee members come from a wide range of backgrounds and have diverse experience, which we draw on to guide and oversee the charity’s work. Trustees share this responsibility both individually and collectively. This requires Trustees to contribute in an informed and active way to all aspects of the Board’s work.
What you’ll bring
To complement our collective skillset we are looking for a new Trustee to join the Board (currently comprising 13 Trustees) who is, or who has significant and recent experience as a Parkinson’s health and care professional in the UK, to help oversee the charity’s activities in health and social care.
We welcome applications from candidates, who can demonstrate the following:
-
Substantial specialist Parkinson’s clinical experience in a UK health or social care setting
-
Good understanding of wider issues and opportunities in UK health and social care, for example in:
- the delivery of services to people with Parkinson's and/or
- educating and developing the workforce
-
Understanding or willingness to learn about what it means to be a trustee
-
Willingness and availability to devote the necessary time and effort
-
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
-
Effective networking and communication skills to represent the charity with external stakeholders
Who can apply?
It’s vital that the people who work for Parkinson’s UK are representative of our diverse community. We actively encourage people from all sections of the community to apply, regardless of race, ethnicity, socio-economic group, gender identity, age, disability, sexual orientation, or religion. To find out more about our ambitions and strategy that underpins this commitment, please see here.
Whether you are an experienced trustee or looking to take on your first trustee role, if you have the skills, time and energy to commit to the role, we’d love to hear from you and can provide full support.
Please apply by following the link and uploading a CV or a short bio, together with a detailed supporting statement which will fully demonstrate how you meet all the criteria of the role, as stated in the "What you'll bring" section of the role description.

We are seeking a volunteer Trustee to join the Board of Trustees at WORTH to collectively oversee the administration and financial governance of the charity. The board is our governing body, providing strategy and direction and ensuring WORTH is run according to the rules.
We would particularly welcome applications from individuals with business, finance and fundraising experience in corporate or charity sectors to join us.
About WORTH
WORTH is a charity providing long term aftercare to women affected by Domestic Abuse. We offer clients 1-1 support and a range of wellbeing groups including art, writing, music and self-defence to help rebuild their confidence and self-esteem.
We provide a safe space for clients to share experiences, give and receive practical and emotional support, learn new skills, reduce isolation, build friendships, and give women their voice back. It is a space where women can focus on their future and we can support our clients in their healing, post abuse.
To be able to provide this support we rely on a great team of volunteers with a wide skill set and a whole lot of passion to enable our services to work effectively.
Our Board of Trustees play a vital role in making sure that WORTH achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management, administration and governance of the charity. They also ensure that WORTH has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the CEO to enable WORTH to grow and thrive and support more women in need.
Trustee Duties:
- Support and provide advice on WORTH's purpose, vision, goals and activities.
- Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
- Oversee WORTH's financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
- Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
- Review and approve WORTH's financial statements.
- Provide support and challenge to WORTH's CEO in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
- Keep abreast of changes in WORTH's operating environment.
- Contribute to regular reviews of WORTH's own governance.
- Attend regular Trustee Board meetings and be adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
- Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect WORTH's interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party interests.
- Contribute to the broader promotion of WORTH's objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.
As a small charity, there will be times when trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Trustee Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising meeting papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.
What we are looking for
We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking and skills on our Board of Trustees. We are particularly interested in candidates with business, finance and fundraising experience.

Over the past ten years, Smart Works has helped over 30,000 women. It is our mission that any woman who needs our service should be able to find her way to a Smart Works centre.
In April 2022, Smart Works launched a new Three-Year Plan that will see the charity double the number of women helped annually from 5,000 to 10,000 women a year. To achieve this, we will grow our existing centres and open new centres in areas of need.
ABOUT SMART WORKS SCOTLAND
Since opening its doors in 2014, Smart Works Scotland has supported over 2,500 unemployed women who need help getting into work.
Smart Works Scotland has established itself as a leading women’s charity within Scotland and operates from two centres, in Glasgow and Edinburgh. It is a fast paced, collaborative environment with a dynamic team and ambitious local plans. All who work here describe it as being hugely fun and rewarding, with opportunities to make a life-changing difference to the women we support.
Meaningful partnerships have been developed and nurtured with fellow charities and organisations which refer women to Smart Works, as well as with a variety of businesses that support the charity.
Over the past 10 years, a dynamic calendar filled with a variety of engaging fundraising activities has been developed to support the work of the charity, with income generated through grants from trusts and foundations, community events and partnership working. Our growth has been driven by an experienced Board of Trustees, dedicated staff team of 8 and our community of 100 volunteers. The Smart Works community is well established in both Glasgow and Edinburgh and the team are excited at the amazing possibilities that exist to continue to reach more and more women across Scotland in need of our service.
Our current Chair who set up the charity all those years ago, has decided that now is the right time to recruit a new Chair who can build on her amazing legacy and steer the charity through its next phase of growth. The need for our service has never been greater and with the momentum that has been built over the years, the Charity is well poised to go from strength to strength.

A key part in achieving this will be leveraging networks to raise the profile of the charity and motivating others to join the Smart Works community as volunteers, ambassadors and donors.
The successful candidate will provide mentorship to the eight members of staff and cultivate a supportive environment where the team can thrive and deliver outstanding results. The role holder will also participate in national Smart Works forums alongside other Smart Works Chairs.
The role is perfect for an experienced and purposeful leader who is passionate about supporting women to transform their lives, and wants to use their skills, professional network and experience for good.
It is a voluntary position, with reasonable travel costs and expenses being covered.
If you share our values, are deeply committed to our mission and have the leadership experience to help us deliver our ambitions, we’d love to hear from you.

Please view the full role profile where we have included a list of skills and personal attributes that the successful candidate is likely able to demonstrate.

“Over the last 10 years, Smart Works has grown from an idea and a passion to support unemployed women into work, into a dynamic and successful charity, transforming the lives of women and communities across the UK. The need for our services and support has never been greater and the new Chair will have a key role to play in ensuring that Smart Works Scotland continues to deliver our ambitious targets for growth, whilst ensuring that we meet and exceed the expectations of our clients. Action for Stammering Children is looking for a Treasurer!
Please read on …
Action for Stammering Children (ASC) is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and suitably qualified person to join our Trustee Board as Treasurer to replace our current Treasurer who has sadly come to the end of his term.
Who are Action for Stammering Children?
Action for Stammering Children is the UK charity for children and young people who stammer, their families, and the communities who support them. We are a small charity, founded in 1989, but one that punches above its weight and with Dr Ria Bernard, who joined us as Chief Executive in 2022, we have big ambitions!
We’re here to make sure that every child who stammers has the support, respect and confidence to live the life they want to lead.
We support and empower parents, caregivers and professionals; facilitate and champion research; and campaign for changes in policy and societal attitudes
What do we do?
Information, community and support
We provide resources, advice and guidance for children and young people who stammer, their families, and the professionals who support them.
Changing policies and attitudes
We make sure the voices of children and young people who stammer are heard. We work with politicians and other decision makers to ensure the unique needs of children who stammer are reflected in public policy. But we know we can’t stop there. That’s why we campaign to challenge prejudices and misconceptions, seeking to change how society treats stammering and promote acceptance.
Championing research
We support and promote research into childhood stammering in order to build understanding and feed into our advocacy work, informing positive changes in policy and practice.
Our team
ASC currently has a staff team of three (one of whom is part-time) but we hope shortly to recruit a part-time book-keeper and an events co-ordinator, in order to be able to deliver on our ambitious strategic objectives.
Our Board of Trustees has been chaired by Dame Jane Roberts since 2021. With a number of trustees having come to the end of their term, we have had a number of trustees join the board recently including a new Company Secretary and two new trustees who had previously been members of ASC’s Youth Panel. With the Chair, the Company Secretary has been reviewing our governance to ensure that we conduct ourselves in line with best practice in charity governance. The Youth Panel is made up of young people who themselves stammer and who inform our strategic direction as well as engage in projects of their own. Our Annual Report for 2022-23 is available on the Charity Commission website, in addition to Trustees’ Reports for previous years.
Executive and Non-Executive, we are a professional but friendly bunch who would extend a warm welcome to a new Treasurer as well as ensure that there was a generous handover period with the current Treasurer.
Who are we looking for as Treasurer?
We would like to attract a qualified accountant, perhaps still working, perhaps recently retired. You might have a personal connection to stammering but this is not required. Your interest, enthusiasm and experience are the most important.
We’d love to hear from potential interested applicants to explain more about what we do and who we are looking for.
In the first instance, please contact Jane Roberts. Please apply with a letter explaining your interest in the role, your CV and two references to my e-mail address.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Dame Jane Roberts
Chair

Your experience can ensure our existing shops generate sustainable income for our branch, and grow our shop network across our branch area. If you have retail management experience, we would love to hear from you.
In April 2024, our branch expanded, encompassing our existing area of Lincoln, Gainsborough, Wragby, Witham St Hughs, Woodhall Spa and Horncastle and gaining new geographical areas including Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Louth and Mablethorpe. Our retail activity is key to generating funds to support our re-homing, and we now have ambitious plans for our expanded area to ensure more mistreated animals can find their forever homes.
About us:
RSPCA Lincolnshire Mid, NE & Lincoln Branch rehabilitates and re-homes animals rescued by the RSPCA's national Inspectors. We also promote responsible pet ownership and hold animal action days such as for microchipping.
We currently run two charity shops and regular fundraising events, to support more than 100 animals escape cruelty and neglect, to find their forever home each year.
What you can bring to our board:
The Trustees make extremely important decisions for the branch, for example deciding on how to raise income for the branch, as well as meeting in sub-groups to consider important subject matters with recommendations being made to the full board of trustees. Our branch is an extremely passionate branch with ten trustees currently forming the committee.
We are looking for someone willing to bring their retail management experience to our board. We want to ensure our current shops generate sustainable income for the branch, as well as grow our shop network across our branch area. You will support our decisions around revenue models, customer service, marketing, data analysis and pricing. You may have experience of increasing revenue through strategic partnerships, gift aid, online sales, employee and volunteer engagement/training, volunteer recruitment and much more.
You will live and/or work in our branch area in Lincolnshire, UK, to bring local insight to our retail decisions.
We meet monthly as a board, with most of these online but we like to also meet at least 3 times each year in-person, as well as support local fundraising events.
If you would like an informal chat about the opportunity, please contact the Chair, Sophie Easteal.
You will need to be a member of the RSPCA, when you are co-opted to the role.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

Are you interested in the power that sport can offer young people? Does Africa inspire you? Are you in a position to dedicate some of your time to a committed UK registered charity, to understand the nuanced challenges faced by those working in the third sector – such as raising funds and tackling inequality – and the challenges faced by the young boys, girls, coaches and staff we support in Malawi? Do you have the expertise to foster positive relationships with fellow Trustees and charity partners, all in a collective effort to align on the charity’s goals and use the charity’s platform to further the development of young people and communities in Malawi?
Do you embody these values: professionalism, respect, integrity, discipline and enjoyment?
About Bhubesi Pride Foundation
Bhubesi Pride Foundation, BPF, is a youth sport and supplementary education charity supporting communities in Africa, now focused on Malawi. Through non-contact rugby, netball and other sports, we help to empower young people, providing opportunities for education, leadership and community development.
Over the last 5+ years, and in the face of multi-faceted challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, BPF has made significant progress helping to develop several core programs in rural Lilongwe, involving boys and girls in youth sports and integrated life skills activities. To enable this, we’ve worked closely with BPF Malawi – the partner NGO we registered (in Lilongwe in 2017) – to assist with organisational strengthening, policy implementation, improved operational delivery, governance, strategy, data collection and impact assessments. Since early 2022, the NGO’s staffed team has increased from two to 11 (all Malawian), 50+ Malawian youth sports coaches have been trained and over 3,000 young people actively participate in locally-led programming. Alongside in-country stakeholders, we’ve facilitated the construction of a unique sports and education facility on a 7-acre site in rural Lilongwe, on land purchased by the NGO, which is being increasingly utilised by BPF Malawi. Alongside the NGO, we’ve expanded our reach, deepened our impact and we continue to champion sport as a vehicle for positive change.
Our experiences have taught us a lot of valuable lessons about the work we do and, crucially, about our duty to Malawian communities. Future goals include increasing our sustainability, improving governance practices and building long-term partnerships which allow BPF to make even more of an impact on the communities we serve. Strengthening the charity’s relationship with BPF Malawi is also a key focus for us over the next 5 years, enabling us all to fully understand, and respond to, Malawi’s core challenges, and paving a more sustainable road ahead.
Role overview
The Chair will lead BPF’s Board of Trustees, working closely with the Chief Executive to ensure the charity continues to deliver on its mission. This is a pivotal role at a strategically important time, for all connected to our work. You will therefore help BPF shape and refine its next strategy and ensure the Board contributes effectively by supporting the charity’s goals.
Key responsibilities
- Leadership: Provide leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring that the charity delivers on its mission and strategic objectives.
- Governance: Ensure strong governance practices are in place, including compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Lead on setting high standards for the Board’s performance and engagement, and appoint new Trustees to bring additional value.
- Strategic planning: Work with the Chief Executive and Board to support the development and implementation of the charity’s next strategy (closely collaborating with, and supporting, BPF Malawi).
- Fundraising and partnerships: Play a key role in helping the charity build long-term partnerships and secure new funding for the charity’s future sustainability.
- Trustee development: Inspire, support and hold BPF’s Trustees accountable for their contributions, ensuring that the Board as a whole functions effectively.
- Advocacy: Act as an ambassador for BPF, raising awareness of our work and helping to grow our profile in the international development and business sectors.
Person specification
Essential:
- Collaborative and inclusive approach: A commitment to working collaboratively with the Board, CEO, staff/volunteers, key stakeholders (e.g. charity partners and BPF Malawi) to achieve shared goals; and an inclusive intent to see that marginalised and vulnerable youth, especially girls and young people with disabilities, are given fair and equal opportunities and rights.
- International development knowledge: Experience in international development, ideally in Africa, with an understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the sector.
- Accountability and high standards: A high level of personal integrity and a focus on holding others to the highest standards of governance, effectiveness and impact – embodying and promoting BPF’s core values.
- Governance expertise: Proven track record of good governance, including understanding the legal and financial responsibilities of a charity board, bringing an open approach to how governance practices can be strengthened.
Desirable:
- Third sector experience: Knowledge and/or experience of the charity sector, within sport for development, youth empowerment, education or international development.
How to apply
If you’re interested in applying for Bhubesi Pride Foundation’s Board Chair role, please send us your CV and a covering letter by Monday 14th October 2024.
