Why join us?
Young people and adults with disabilities, neurodivergence and disadvantage are 3 times less likely than anyone else to have a paid job.
This has a huge impact on every aspect of an adult’s life. It is well-evidenced that young people and adults who are unemployed are more likely to live in poverty, lack confidence and self-worth and feel isolated from friends and family.
Depending on the disability you live with, the situation is even worse. Just 1 in 20 adults living with a learning disability and just 3 in 50 adults living with a mental health challenge have a paid job.
The disability/neurodivergence employment gap is harmful and unfair. It’s also fixable. Over 20 years of experience shows us that young people and adults with disabilities are able to find and stay in work with the right help. Employers benefit too.
Everyone at Ways into Work is passionate about supporting people with disabilities, neurodivergence and disadvantage to find the right job for them, secure paid employment and sustain their job with our help.
Why now is the right time to join us
This is an exciting time to join us as earlier this year we converted to a charity (from a CIC). As we look to the future, we are seeking to build on the expertise we have established over the last 20 years.
To date we have relied heavily on contracts from local government. The need to diversify our income base, to support more clients into employment and to provide a more secure future for our clients, fed into our decision to become a charity.
We are looking to recruit Trustees who have worked in charities, or who bring particular expertise, to provide a strategic steer in delivering our core purpose. In the months ahead we will be looking to revise our strategy, recruit new roles and put in place the infrastructure needed to begin to make our core purpose available to more of those in need in Berkshire and the Thames Valley. You would have the opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping these processes, bringing us closer to delivering the support we know our clients need.
Trustee Role Description
As a Trustee, you will play a crucial role in setting the strategic direction of the charity and ensuring good governance. You will contribute to ensuring that the charity fulfils its mission, operates effectively, and remains accountable to its clients - adults and young people living with disabilities and neurodiversity.
Duties:
- Support and provide advice on achieving Ways into Work’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
- Review and approve operational strategies, policies and recommendations, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
- Act as ambassador for Ways into Work, promoting our work and building networks of interested parties who are enthusiastic about our work.
- Other Duties as are listed in the Candidate Pack
About you:
You do not need to have previous experience of acting as a Trustee, although we are interested in some of our new Trustees having charity experience. We are looking for you to bring the personal skills and qualities outlined in the Candidate Pack, and we would welcome expertise in one these areas: Communications, HR, Charity Law, Fundraising, Community and other disciplines appropriate for our core purpose.
We would greatly value experience of acting at a senior level (such as in a ‘Head of’ role) as you will need to be comfortable sharing your expertise with the wider Board, and offering support and constructive challenge to our new senior recruits and senior leadership team.
We recognise the enormous value of lived experience. We know that there is no ‘us’ and ‘them’. Many in Ways into Work live with disabilities or neurodiversity and/or have wider lived experiences that offer huge value to the work we deliver.
Please read the attached Candidate Pack before submitting your application. You can access this when you click the 'Apply' button.
Please submit your CV and a Cover Letter that outlines your experience in charities, the expertise you are offering and two other points that you believe will be of interest to Ways into Work.
Our mission is to get as many people with disabilities, neurodivergence and disadvantage in Berkshire into sustained paid employment, as possible.

Join our board as a treasurer: help us navigate a path to a sustainable future
Are you a finance professional with a passion for making a difference?
CMV Action are seeking a proactive and committed treasurer to join our board of trustees, bringing financial expertise and strategic guidance to help our charity navigate a challenging period.
About CMV Action
CMV Action is the only charity in the UK providing support and information to families affected by congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV). Congenital CMV is the most common viral infection that can affect babies before birth, with potential long-term health impacts such as hearing loss, developmental delays and vision loss. It can also cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
As many as 1 in 200 newborn babies are born with congenital CMV. The majority of these will not have any symptoms. However, around 1 in 1,000 born in the UK every year will have permanent disabilities as a result of congenital CMV – around 900 children every year. As congenital CMV is a relatively unknown condition, it is a common misconception that it is rare. It is in fact more common than Down’s syndrome, Toxoplasmosis, Spina Bifida or Cystic Fibrosis.
Despite the prevalence and potential severity of congenital CMV, awareness and knowledge are alarmingly low among healthcare professionals, parents and the general public. One of our key roles, therefore, is to develop and deliver resources and training for healthcare professionals, run public awareness campaigns, and collaborate with researchers and policy makers to improve outcomes for those affected by congenital CMV.
The Role
As treasurer, you will play a key role in overseeing the financial health of our charity and ensuring we are well-positioned to continue our work. You will work with us to ensure that the charity complies with its governing document, charity law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations. This is an opportunity to make a significant difference by contributing your financial expertise to help us develop and implement a sustainable funding strategy.
What we are looking for
We are seeking a Treasurer who shares our values and can bring the following skills and experience to our board:
- Financial expertise: A background in finance, accounting, or financial management, with a qualification in line with a recognised professional body (e.g., ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW). Experience in charity finance is highly desirable.
- Proactive and purposeful: Ability to think strategically, explore new financial pathways, and drive change to support the charity’s long-term viability.
- Collaborative spirit: Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to working closely with others to build a sustainable funding strategy.
- Accountability and integrity: A commitment to honest, transparent, and ethical financial management and reporting.
- Evidence-based decision making: An analytical mindset, using data and research to guide financial decisions that support our mission.
- Commitment to inclusivity: A passion for ensuring that our work is accessible and equitable for all, embracing the diverse needs of those affected by congenital CMV.

About Safe Passage International
Safe Passage International (SPI) is a charity that champions the rights of people seeking asylum and displaced people as they flee persecution. We use the law to help them access safe routes to a place of safety and we work alongside them to campaign for change and build public support for safe passage for all.
We have a particular focus on supporting unaccompanied children and young people to reunite with family and reach protection in Europe, although we also work with adults and family groups too.
We are based in the UK, with small offices also in France and Greece. These offices are locally registered not for profit companies who are part of Safe Passage International, overseen by the international UK Board of Trustees.
Safe Passage International advances its mission through five main strands of work:
- providing legal advice to asylum-seekers and their family members to help them be safely and legally reunited;
- holding governments and decision-makers to account on their legal obligations to people seeking asylum;
- campaigning and advocacy with policy makers in Government, Parliament, and other authorities to provide safe and legal routes for people seeking asylum;
- helping young people seeking asylum to settle upon arrival and working with them to campaign on issues that they are passionate about;
- Improving public awareness of the need for safe routes.
About our Board of Trustees
Joining the Safe Passage International Board means playing a leading role in a charity that supports people seeking asylum to access safe routes and reunite with family. By contributing your skills and perspective, you have the opportunity to support them to find safety.
SPI is run by a Board of Directors known as Trustees. The Trustees work on a voluntary basis to uphold the core purpose of the charity, set its strategy, and protect its reputation. They are also responsible for overseeing the charity’s finances and ensuring that the charity’s activities fulfil its aims and are in line with charitable rules and regulations.
SPI’s existing Board currently has ten Trustees who between them have expertise by experience and / or knowledge and experience in the areas of safeguarding and casework, campaigning and advocacy, EU policies and law, finance, HR, leadership development, public policy, and governance.
It is very important that the Board’s decision-making is informed by the perspectives of people seeking asylum. We value the powerful insight that lived experience brings to the Board. We also respect that people’s identity is not defined by their past experiences and do not expect candidates to describe their lived experience during the interview process unless they wish to.
What support will you receive?
We welcome applications from people without prior experience of being a Trustee, as well as those who have been on Boards before. As part of our commitment to supporting a diverse and effective Board we will provide you with:
- Full induction
- Training sessions
- Guidance
- An experienced Trustee to buddy with you
- Expenses (travel to meetings)

Throughout your time as a Trustee, we are committed to supporting your growth and offer access to relevant courses and development opportunities to help you build your skills and maximise your impact

Join the Board of this leading charity delivering vital substance use, mental health and well-being services across the UK, and help provide high-quality, person-centred care to people affected by addiction.
Time commitment: The equivalent of a day a month
Who we are.
Via is an exceptional charity that puts people at the heart of everything we do. Over three decades, we’ve evolved from our origins as Westminster Drug Project, with a new name and brand, into a dynamic, multi-service organisation delivering vital support across substance use, mental health, employment, sexual health, smoking cessation and youth services. With a turnover of £36m for 24/25 and remarkable growth of over a third in 2023/24, we’re now supporting over 10,000 service users annually across an expanding geographical footprint from London to Gloucestershire.
Our commitment to excellence and innovation is evident in our industry-leading 26% successful treatment completion rate, significantly above the national average. In 2023, We’re particularly proud to be pioneering the development of the UK’s first women-only detox facility, demonstrating our commitment to addressing crucial gaps in service provision.
The opportunity.
As we have experienced growth and are launching our new strategy, a number of our Trustees will come to the end of their terms in the next 18 months we are keen to build on their legacy and succession plan. Initially, we’re looking for three new exceptional trustees to join our Board during this exciting period of growth and innovation. We’re particularly interested in individuals who can bring expertise in:
- Finance & Accountancy: We’re seeking an experienced finance professional to join our board and, in time, chair our Finance & Resources Committee when our current chair of the committee, Richard Paul comes to the end of his term later this year. You’ll bring senior-level financial expertise, strong analytical skills, and the ability to provide strategic financial oversight during a period of significant organisational growth. Experience of charity finance would be advantageous but is not essential.
- Clinical Professional with experience in addiction: We’re looking for a clinician, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist, with experience in addiction to join our board. This trustee will subsequently chair our Service Delivery & Governance Committee when our current committee chair, Raj Boyjoonauth completes his term at the end of 2024. You’ll bring deep understanding of clinical governance, quality assurance, and service development in addiction treatment settings.
- Business Development: Our third trustee will bring commercial acumen and business development expertise to support our continued growth. You’ll have experience in developing and implementing growth strategies, ideally in health, social care, or related sectors. We’re particularly interested in individuals who understand both commercial imperatives and social impact, and can help us think strategically about sustainable growth while maintaining service quality. This person could bring experience in the charity or commercial sectors.
What Makes a Great Via Trustee
The ideal Via Trustee brings not just expertise but a passion for improving lives and reducing inequalities. You’ll be someone who understands the complexity of our work yet can think strategically about our future. We need individuals who can both support and constructively challenge, bringing fresh perspectives while respecting the expertise of our staff and service users.
Our Commitment to Inclusion
Diversity in governance isn’t just a goal for Via – it’s a necessity. Our services support people from every part of society, and we want our Board to reflect this diversity. We actively encourage applications from people with lived experience of addiction/recovery (whether personal or as family members/carers), and people from communities currently underrepresented at board level.
Time Commitment
The Board meets quarterly, usually in person. Trustees join one sub-committee, which also meets quarterly, usually online. Including preparation time, representation at events, and strategic input, we estimate a commitment of the equivalent of a day a month. This includes:
- Four Board meetings per year
- Quarterly committee meetings
- Annual strategy and away day
- Occasional representation at events and meetings with key stakeholders, including at services.
We understand many trustees balance this role with other commitments. Board and committee meetings are scheduled well in advance to help with planning.
Making a Difference Together
This is an extraordinary time to join Via. As we implement our new 2025-29 strategy and expand our geographical reach, innovate our evidence-based offer and increase access to more people. We’re not just growing – we’re evolving. You’ll help shape innovative services like our women’s detox facility while ensuring we maintain our unwavering commitment to quality, innovation, and person-centred care.
