We have an exciting opportunity for Locum Legal Advisors to join our Legal Advice and Welfare Service.
About the Role
Legal Advisors at Freedom from Torture deliver expert, detailed, advice to treatment clients and their clinicians on all areas of asylum and immigration law. There is a particular focus on complex, appeals rights exhausted cases where there is a risk of detention, and on supporting clients who are unrepresented. Legal Advisors review evidence produced by clinicians for use in clients’ asylum and immigration cases, ensuring that it complies with the standards required of a professional witness. Legal Advisors are also responsible for delivering internal and external training on a range of legal issues affecting torture survivors within the immigration and asylum system in the UK.
We are seeking to recruit Locum Legal Advisors to provide additional capacity to the team when needed. The Locum Legal Advisors may be asked to undertake any tasks covered by the Legal Advisor Job Description accompanying this advertisement. Although we are unable to offer guaranteed hours, we may be able to offer up to three days per week in early 2025. The role will be hybrid and attendance at either of our Manchester or London centres may be required.

About You
You will be a qualified legal professional: a solicitor, barrister, or OISC accredited at Level Three, with expertise in immigration and asylum law, particularly in relation to the legal protections available to survivors of torture. You will have experience of advising and representing clients in the Tribunals and Courts, including in judicial review claims. You will be able to communicate effectively and sensitively with people who have experienced trauma and will be able to build professional relationships with a variety of colleagues both internally and externally. You will share our commitment to working with and empowering people who have experienced torture.

The Role:
As a Regional Implementation Advisor, you'll ensure that projects and training streams are informed by the latest policy and research. Your work will focus on integrated, preventative, and early intervention support for families, with a particular emphasis on the early years and perinatal mental health.
Responsibilities:
- Leading research activities and contributing specialist knowledge of research methods.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with regional stakeholders, including local authorities and the voluntary and community sectors.
- Facilitating events, such as Communities of Practice and Action Learning Sets, to share best practice and insights.
- Contributing to the creation of high-quality resources tailored to the needs of regional areas.
- Representing the organisation at national conferences, events, and external meetings.
- Ensuring equity, diversity, inclusion, and safeguarding considerations are embedded in all activities.
Requirements
- Knowledge of local authority and voluntary sector landscapes in early years and family hub policy.
- Awareness of UK policies related to health and social care for families with young children.
- Understanding of parent-child relationships, attachment theory, and mental health.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication, and facilitation skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Teams, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work to tight deadlines.

About the role
You’ll manage, coach and develop a team of eight home based Parkinson’s Local Advisers (PLAs) to deliver a high standard of service across Scotland. You’ll ensure that the team is supported in meeting service demand which will include more complex casework, covering gaps, or supporting new/inexperienced colleagues.
You’ll work with colleagues across the wider Parkinson’s UK Scotland team to support the delivery of local priorities to reach and support more people affected by Parkinson’s.
What you’ll do:
- Lead a team of Parkinson’s Local Advisers to deliver a professional service that gives accurate, tailored information and support based on needs in line with optimal service practice
- Ensure quality service standards are met, including assessing needs, advocacy, information and support given and referrals
- Provide support and guidance to your team of advisers, including on complex casework and safeguarding cases. Occasional need to pick up direct casework at busy times/absences etc.
- Ensure appropriate staffing cover and support other teams as required

About the role
You’ll empower your clients to take actions for themselves or will advocate on their behalf for better service, support and outcomes, so they can live their life with Parkinson's in the way they choose.
You’ll deliver tailored information and support through a range of channels including telephone, video and email and, where appropriate, home visits and in community settings.
You’ll be responsible for building excellent relationships with healthcare professionals and other relevant agencies, as well as our network of volunteers and groups.
What you'll do:
- Provide professional person centred, in depth support to clients by a range of means, ensuring the most efficient and effective use of resources.
- Provide support on a variety of health and social care issues, including appropriate emotional, employment and welfare benefits support and advocating with and on behalf of clients.
- Work flexibly across the service responding to enquiries through a range of channels.
- Work closely with clinicians, specialist nurses and other professional colleagues to raise the profile of the service, increase depth of support and achieve improved outcomes for people with Parkinson’s.
What you'll bring:
- Experience of managing and delivering individual case work, including advocating for clients and supporting people to navigate the health and social care system
- Experience and understanding of safeguarding and your role in keeping clients safe and implementing organisational policies and procedure
- Ability to be calm and use emotional intelligence in challenging casework
- Demonstrable digital competence, with experience of effective use of a range of tools including online case management systems
- The ability to build effective working relationships with others including working within multi disciplinary teams internally and externally
