Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that Confident Conversations achieves its core purpose: to help parents in hospital become partners in their child’s care. Trustees oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that Confident Conversations has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the executive team to enable Confident Conversations to grow and thrive and so support more parents and carers in hospital.
Duties
This is currently a virtual role. All meetings are held virtually (online). Trustees need access to a computer, smartphone or tablet with internet access.
- Support and provide advice on Confident Conversation’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
- Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
- Oversee Confident Conversation’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress; and review and approve Confident Conversations’s financial statements.
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
- Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
- Provide support and challenge to Confident Conversations’s Director in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
- Keep abreast of changes in Confident Conversations’s operating environment.
- Contribute to regular reviews of Confident Conversations’s own governance. Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
- Use independent judgement, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect Confident Conversations’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party interests.
- Contribute to the broader promotion of Confident Conversations’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.
What we are looking for
We are looking for someone willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role of trustee, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking and experience on our Board. You do not need previous experience of being a trustee – we will provide a full induction and training.
However, you should have experience of advocating for a patient in hospital who cannot effectively advocate for themselves. This includes parents and carers with lived experience of advocating for their child, and medical professionals (doctors, nurses, other medical specialists) who work in paediatrics.
Legally, trustees must be at least 16 years old. We do not accept applications from anyone who is currently disqualified from acting as a charity trustee.
Personal skills and qualities
- Willingness and ability to understand and accept their responsibilities and liabilities as trustees and to act in the best interests of the organisation.
- Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.
- Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.
- A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
- Enthusiasm for our vision and mission.
- Willingness to lead according to our values. All our work, including our interactions with each other, stakeholders and those we support, is guided by the following principles:
- Kindness in our approach to our work and ourselves.
- Differences are our strength. Difference of experience and thought is vital to our success.
- Confidence in engaging with, and challenging, our work at all levels. We must be welcoming and supportive to ensure this happens.
- Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
Terms of appointment
Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.
Terms of office
- Trustees are appointed for a three year term of office.
- This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
Time commitment
- Attending four one-hour Board meetings annually. Meetings are currently held virtually.
- Reading papers and preparing for Board meetings. Papers are circulated at least one week before every meeting. They are usually around two pages of A4 per paper, and meetings have, on average, four papers.
- There may be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This can involve scrutinising papers circulated by email, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.
To apply, please email Lydia Strachan, Director, attaching your CV and a paragraph on why you feel you are suited to the role.
This role is advertised as part of TPP's Free Giving Back Services. This volunteer advertisement copy has been supplied to TPP and applicants apply direct to the organisation. Please contact the organisation directly if you have any questions about this volunteer role.
Job Description
Volunteer monitoring work with the IMB gives you the opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives. You will listen to prisoners and people in immigration detention, talk to staff and see for yourself what is actually happening behind the walls.
The IMB is recruiting for new members at numerous prisons and at immigration detention centres across England and Wales, and at short term holding facilities across the UK. We are looking for people who live within approximately 30 miles (or one hour) of their closest establishment and can commit the time to make 2 to 3 visits per month, although this may be slightly higher during the first year of training and this can be flexible depending on the needs of the Board and the individual. Please visit the IMB website for a full list of all locations we are recruiting to.
Who are the IMB?
We’re a group of ordinary members of the public, doing an extraordinary job. As a passionate, personable individual, you could join us in making a difference. In this unpaid role, you’ll volunteer your talent and time towards securing a decent day-to-day life for every prisoner and detainee. Under the guidance of dedicated mentors and an extensive training programme, you’ll commit to a flexible schedule of visits to a local establishment each month. Although this is an unpaid role, we pay travel and subsistence expenses, childcare or carer costs and, in certain circumstances, contributions towards loss of earnings. Your observations will have an impact as your Board reports its findings to Ministers in His Majesty’s Government.
About the role
With unrestricted access to these unique environments, you’ll gain a rare insight into all aspects of life in custody. Impartial and highly influential, you can decide what shape your visits should take. As an independent monitor, you may spend time in a specific part of the establishment and choose to have your conversations with prisoners or detainees out of sight or hearing of a member of staff. As well as keeping a close eye on daily operations, you’ll play a crucial role in dealing with problems that arise. This could be in response to a confidential request to see a member of the IMB, or to observe the management of the more serious incidents that occur.
Why join us?
More than anything else, this is a rewarding opportunity that makes a real and meaningful difference to the lives of prisoners, detainees and our wider society. Ministers are obliged to respond to the issues raised in your Board’s report. The environment may seem intimidating at first, but you will be fully supported through your training and accompanied during your visits until you feel ready to manage independently. This highly recognised and respected role could provide the experience that opens doors into other careers within the justice system.
Who are we looking for?
There is no one type of person who could be right for the IMB because it’s not about background or skillset. It’s about having the dedication and passion to ensure all people are being treated fairly. For that reason, we’re looking for individuals from all walks of life who will approach the role with no preconceptions. You will need to be willing to work within a challenging environment and have the confidence to report your findings to senior figures. Most importantly, you will be able to talk to people in a way that makes each prisoner or detainee feel respected and reassured.
Closing date for completed applications is 14 October 2024.

DigitallyHR
Women make up over 70% of HR roles globally, yet they often earn less than their male counterparts. Moreover, in Africa, there is a significant digital divide—men generally have greater access to technology and digital skills compared to women. As AI becomes more prevalent, these gaps are not only persisting but potentially widening. AI can exacerbate the digital divide if women lack access to the latest technology and digital training. Additionally, this divide can further entrench the gender pay gap, as those with advanced digital skills are often better positioned for higher-paying roles. Without intervention, the risk is that AI and digital advancements could reinforce existing inequalities rather than bridging them.
DIgitallyHR is community dedicated to empowering HR professionals to bridge these divides. DigitallyHR provides a space to learn digital skills, access valuable resources, and a platform to utilize AI tools to automate daily tasks.
Join us let's make AI an empowering tool, especially for women in the HR profession.

We have formed a partnership with the youth-led organisation Make it Mandatory so that we can support each other to meet our shared goal to extend inclusive RSE to post-16 and make a difference to the lives of young people.
What we do
Now that RSE is compulsory, we are focused on ensuring that children and young people get the good quality RSE lessons they have been promised, and that educators have the skills and knowledge necessary to provide inclusive RSE. One of the services that we offer is high-quality RSE training for teachers, foster carers and other youth professionals.
The experiences and voices of young people are central to our work. Some young people, especially those who are marginalised, are still missing out on RSE so we’re paying particular attention to addressing those gaps. We work closely with young people to design and launch our annual Young People’s RSE Poll. This gives us more data about the experiences of young people and what needs to change.
About the board of trustees
Our board is made up of between 8 and 12 volunteers who are all passionate about the work of the charity and committed to ensuring all children and young people can access high quality, evidence-based and inclusive Relationships and Sex Education. Our trustees each bring different skills and types of experience, and are valued for their contribution.
Being a trustee can be very rewarding, because you see the impact that your advice has on the working of our charity. You get to develop yourself and gain skills, and have the chance to help shape what we do and how we do it. Crucially, trustees help us stick to our values and principles and in doing so, make sure that we fulfil our commitment to making RSE accessible to all young people.
Who are we looking for
We are looking for up to four new Trustees to join our current Board. We are keen to recruit people with fundraising, financial management, lived experience or youth participation expertise. We would like to encourage more young trustees (aged 18 years old and above) to join our board. Read the role description below and don’t feel you have to tick all the boxes. If you have some of these skills to offer please give it a go.

Amplify Barawak’s mission and enhance our public presence through strategic marketing and powerful advocacy. As the Marketing Outreach and Advocacy Vertical Lead, you’ll craft compelling narratives that engage and mobilize our community.
Understanding the Verticals at Barawak
Imagine Barawak as a living, thriving tree. Our verticals are like the main branches—each one strong and important, reaching out in its own direction but all connected to the same trunk, our community's mission. These four powerhouse teams each have a special job:
• The Fundraising and Financial Management vertical covers fundraising and money matters: This team is all about finding resources—like getting donations and grants—to keep our programmes strong and healthy. They will spend their time writing fantastic letters, sponsorship proposals and funding requests on behalf of Barawak as a whole, but also (supporting programme leads) to specific organisations for Barawak service lines.
• The Partnership Development and Collaboration vertical covers building bridges: They're the connectors, making friends with other groups, businesses, and everyone who can help us grow.
• The Volunteer Engagement vertical covers welcoming our helpers: This bunch is in charge of gathering our most valuable resource—people like you who want to volunteer and make a difference.
• The Marketing Outreach and Advocacy vertical covers spreading the word: They tell our story far and wide, making sure everyone knows what we're up to and how they can join in.
Each vertical team works in two distinct ways: the first way is for Barawak as a whole, and the second way is in support of each Barawak service, feeding our programmes, like roots bringing water and nutrients to the branches. Whether it's Poverty Relief, Education, Employment Support, Community Engagement or Sports and Wellness, these verticals give the support each programme needs to blossom and bear fruit. Working together, they make sure we're all pushing in the same direction—towards a future where our community stands tall and proud.
