We are recruiting for a volunteer to teach the Women at our Refuge martial arts. It is also an opportunity for children to attend the class and learn some basic techniques!

The discipline and training of martial arts can lead to physical, mental, and emotional benefits that can improve the quality of your life in countless ways. Martial arts can help reduce stress and anxiety and helps train your mind to keep focused whilst remaining calm and alert.

Practicing martial arts releases chemicals like endorphins that lift your mood and helps direct your energy towards something positive that you can build over time. It also strengthens your body, helps boost your self-esteem and helps you identify what you wish to improve in your life and gives you the confidence to make positive changes.

What you will be doing

• Coordinate and set up a weekly martial arts class for women and children
• Inspire and motivate women and children to take part in the sessions and take a role in planning/designing upcoming sessions
• Create a safe space for individuals to practice and learn new techniques through martial arts
• Encourage members of the group to connect and relate to each other through practicing together

Our employability and progression mentors support young people thorugh 121's to develop their confidence and skills and achieve a positive outcome. If you have experience within Health and Social Care, you can support groups of young people through assisting and leading on delivering sessions.

If you have a background in H&SC, you will assist and lead in delivering Healthcare-specific sessions such as Infection Control, Adult Support and Protection and Values Based Recruitment, providing guidance and encouragement to develop young people’s knowledge and employability skills. There will be session plans and training provided for this, so that you feel confident and equipped to deliver the sessions to a group of young people.

The Prince’s Trust is looking for volunteers to develop young people’s employability skills, e.g., CV reviews and mock interviews and help them search for jobs in H&SC. You will be a vital resource assisting with deciphering job descriptions and suitability criteria to support young people to make an informed choice about the jobs they apply for. You will also provide a framework to encourage self-development activities and resilience as part of being job-ready for H&SC. During the first few months of the young person’s employment; you will provide guidance and support while they are adjusting to the work and the environment.

By volunteering to be a mentor with The Prince’s Trust within our Health and Social Care (H&SC) project, you will be helping to shape the next generation of healthcare workers. You will be working 121 with Young People who want to work in H&SC and need your support to get there.

Mentoring partnerships with a young person usually last around six months and will take about an hour of your time once a week. Most mentor meetings occur virtually in a provision provided by the Trust and will flex around your and the young person’s availability. You do not have to have a background in H&SC to apply for this role although it would be preferable - however, if you have specific skills of H&SC background, please let us know on your application.

Knowledge and skills important to the role:

• Building trust with young people from various backgrounds – mentoring skills, great communicator, positive, encouraging, giving and receiving constructive corrective feedback and reinforcing learning and progress.

Welcome to Kafunjo Community Project, a friendly community near Ibanda (Uganda). We have an orphanage, a school and a small clinic. There are 350 children living here, we live together as a family and we love when people visit us. We can’t wait to meet you!

This volunteer program gives you the possibility to share time and experiences with the children, teachers and workers in the project.

They appreciate people coming from different realities, looking at things with fresh eyes, sharing new ideas and offering help in whatever is needed. 

All volunteers are accepted without discrimination, they just need to be over 18 years old. They do not need any special training or knowledge, tasks will be given according to their experience and preferences. 

What could you do there?

At school:

• Teaching English hand to hand with local teachers or assisting them in the lessons.
• Using their creativity in preparing learning activities, lessons, songs, dances...
• Creating learning resources for the school, posters, paintings, etc.
• Helping children with basic daily routines, such as cutting nails, combing hair, washing hands, brushing teeth, etc.

In the project:

• Building new structures to help the community: we have different projects we would love to make true with your help.
• Painting the classrooms and the children’s dormitories.
• Working in the field: Planting new crops, picking coffee and collecting vegetables or weedling.
• Taking care of our animals: we have pigs, goats, chickens and cows.
• Helping with daily tasks, such as cooking lunch or dinner for everyone at the project, cleaning, fetching water from our tanks, etc.
• Taking part in educational training workshops and monitoring tasks.

Costs of the program:

The total cost of the program is 1.100.000 Ugandan shellings per week.

It includes:

• Pick-up and transfer by private transport from Entebbe airport to the accommodation.
• Cultural immersion and orientation talks about Uganda (the culture and customs of the country).
• Accommodation in a shared house with other volunteers (shared rooms, living room/dining room and bathroom).
• Three meals a day from Monday to Friday and two meals a day on weekends.
• Permanent assistance at the destination (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).
• Local coordination.
• Support from staff at all times.
• Certificate accrediting your participation in the program (optional).
• Exclusive volunteer T-shirt.

The role can involve helping to run social activities, welcoming clients at social activities and promoting the social groups within the farming community.

Outline of the Referrals Networker role

If you thrive on networking and making new connections, this vital and interesting role offers the opportunity to create and develop relationships with local agencies, such as Job Centres, social services and many others who may be able to refer potential Readers to the group. The longevity of our local groups is down to securing a steady stream of Reader referrals, so you will play an instrumental part in making sure your group thrives.

How we will support you

You will be provided with the Management Team Handbook, training/induction, policies and guidance specifically needed for this role, including access to support from a Read Easy UK Regional Adviser, via your Team Leader. You will also be invited to Read Easy UK’s regional forums and annual conference which give volunteers an opportunity for networking with those from other groups.

What you will be doing

● Liaising with your group to establish which organisations have already been contacted, so that you can build on that initial work.

● Managing the relationship between the referral agencies and the group.

● Seeking out new referral agencies as the group grows in capacity.

● Familiarising yourself with the Publicity Organiser’s resources available to you.

● Creating a record of organisations and agencies who are likely to come into contact with those who don’t read and the dates you are in touch with them.

● Contacting these organisations regularly to provide information about what your group offers and identify how they can best inform their personnel to make referrals.

● Keeping your local group informed about your activity and identifying how many of your© Read Easy UK 2 June 2023 contacts refer new Readers.

● Attending Management Team meetings, typically every 6-8 weeks.

We are looking for enthusiastic and empathetic volunteers with great communication skills. As a wellbeing caller, you will phone clients of Age UK Islington (AUKI) to complete a wellbeing check, log details from the call on our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, and flag up anyone that may need more assistance or further access to services. This may be the role for you if

• You are a good listener that can engage others in natural and easy conversation to find out how they are getting on.

By providing practical solutions and guidance to adults that might be struggling, you will be able to make a difference in someone’s life. This role can be done from home, providing you have the right computer and/or phone setup.

Commitment:

We are a relatively small organisation working with vulnerable adults and we have quite a few administrative boxes to tick before accepting new volunteers. You will need to fill in an application form, provide two references, a DBS check, have an informal interview, complete some safeguarding courses online, listen to a volunteer induction presentation, and receive role specific training.

Because the training and administrative work required to get a volunteer set up is quite extensive, we are asking for a commitment of a minimum of 3-4 hours a week for at least 6 months.

Extras:

This position is not accessible to those that are under the age of 18.  

We will pay all reasonable travel expenses as well as subsistence/lunch expenses if you volunteer for half a day (3.5 hours or more). Office hours are between 9 and 5.
