Akwaaba are looking for a new trustee with Safeguarding experience to join our board of trustees, and as an organisation who shares our values we hope that you will be able to share this with people/organisations that may be interested.

Responsibilities include:

• Being the Safeguarding Lead for Akwaaba- should have advanced level knowledge of safeguarding , ideally of children and adults, and experience working with children, young people and families.

• Working closely with the children’s team, particularly a smaller group of volunteers who will be your main point of contact 

• Supporting our volunteers working with children and families with advice and suggestions to manage any safeguarding issues which arise at Akwaaba sessions

• Ensure policies are appropriate and up to date. 

• Being available to speak to volunteers (this can be off site over the phone) during our Sunday sessions (currently the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month), should any urgent safeguarding issues arise which might need escalating.

We are looking for a new Chair of Governors to replace our current Chair who is due to retire in winter 2025. Marie Curie Companion is a professional service provided by trained volunteers who offer one-to-one companionship and support to people with a terminal illness and their families. The service would not be able to reach those most in need if it was not for the commitment and hard work of the volunteers delivering the service.

Companion Volunteers provide companionship and emotional support, practical support, short breaks for carers and help with signposting for information and support.

Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:

• Carry out weekly visits with the person(s) you’re supporting, as agreed with the Volunteer Co-ordinator. This could be in a variety of settings, eg family home, a care home or in the community.
• Provide one-to-one companionship and support. 

For example: offering a listening ear and spending time engaging in every-day conversation, activities or hobbies with the person you are supporting. Helping with small, daily tasks, e.g. making tea or accessing the internet. Allowing carers to have a short break. This may involve offering emotional support, signposting to relevant local support services or finding out information as requested 

(This is only an outline as support will vary according to individual needs. Companion volunteers do not provide nursing or personal care, or offer counselling or advice)

• Keep your manager informed of any changes to the situation, or any significant happenings in connection to the person you’re supporting and/or their family, either in person or by phone 
• Submit regular visit reports to your manager and update relevant computer systems as required 
• Be reliable and committed to regularly spending time with someone and offering support
• Attend individual sessions with your Volunteer Co-ordinator, training and group events as required 
• Represent the Marie Curie Companion service positively to those using the service

OVERVIEW

Poltimore House Trust is a registered charity dedicated to the restoration of an historic mansion just outside Exeter. Despite an arson attack which caused severe damage to the House, the Trust Board’s commitment to restoration as a focal point for the arts, business, communities and wellbeing remains undiminished. A new Board has been recruited over the last two years, bringing a wide range of professional expertise and experience to the Trust.

In addition to the House, the Trust owns 13.6 acres of the historic estate and established a popular Café in 2022 which was unaffected by the fire. The Board is committed to developing a strategy for the Grounds which blends heritage restoration, biodiversity and a unique visitor experience.

The Grounds are maintained by a committed team of some 30 regular volunteers, and a campaign is currently underway to increase recruitment. Corporate volunteering has also grown recently and the Trust is seeking further opportunities to develop this valuable area of support further. The Board recognises that, as a volunteer-led organisation, we need to build a positive culture which delivers high levels of satisfaction for those who give us their time. 

We are therefore seeking a Trustee with appropriate skills to take the lead in the recruitment, care and deployment of our growing team of volunteers. This is a hands on role which will involve a presence on site for at least one day a week, as well as participation in Board and Committee meetings. In return, you will be a highly valued member of the Board, playing a key role in the restoration of this historic House and Grounds.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

We are seeking a Trustee with the skills required to deliver the duties and tasks outlined below, and to act as a full member of our Board. 

The principal responsibility is to ensure a positive and satisfying experience for our volunteers, including their deployment on tasks which make a tangible contribution to the maintenance and improvement of the Grounds.

Trustee role description

The duties of a Trustee are to:

In order to discharge this responsibility, the Nations Trustee will be expected to: 

• attend the quarterly Nation Committee meetings and the Annual Conference
• establish working relationships with the Director of Devolved Nations, and with the Chair and other members of the Nations Committees
• represent Carers Wales and Carers Northern Ireland at some external events
• sit on recruitment panels as required.

Person specification 

• Sound knowledge of the relevant Nation’s issues, the devolved responsibilities held by the relevant Government, its diversity and geographical challenges
• A willingness to understand the work being delivered in the relevant Nation, context, key priorities and aims
• Be a Welsh/ Irish language speaker, or willing to learn (desirable)
• It is essential that the Trustee lives in the relevant Nation and is willing and able to travel to Cardiff/Belfast and London with some overnight stays required.

Sands exists to save babies' lives and ensure that anyone affected by pregnancy loss or baby death receives the care and support they need.

As a Trustee, you will provide strategic oversight and leadership, ensuring that Sands pursues its stated objectives through its vision and mission.

About the team:

The Public Law team operates within our Legal Access Department, which works to support clients navigating the complex and often traumatic asylum system in the UK. The Public Law team's main focus is on challenging issues relating to Home Office-provided accommodation. To date, we have supported hundreds of asylum seekers housed on the Bibby Stockholm barge in Portland and at former MoD site RAF Wethersfield. We provide one-to-one casework for individuals accommodated at these sites, gathering information to support a transfer request to more suitable accommodation, and gathering data and evidence for wider legal challenges to the Home Office’s use of these sites. We believe that large, remote sites of this kind are fundamentally unsuitable for accommodation of asylum seekers.

• Liaising with other professionals including lawyers, Migrant Help, and other C4C teams

Essential:

• Ability to use spreadsheets, Google Workspace, messaging platforms and secure databases.

• Proven dedication to social justice with a clear understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable populations, or a willingness to learn about these. 

• Ability to work sensitively with a diverse range of clients, demonstrating cultural competence, respect and compassion.

• Experience in efficiently managing high volume caseloads while maintaining a high standard of care and attention.

• Resilience in the face of challenging and emotionally demanding situations, with a positive and solution-oriented mindset.

• Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to take initiative.

• Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely to people who do not have English as their first language, working alongside interpreters to ensure clients understand the process

• Meticulous attention to detail in documentation and case records, ensuring accuracy and compliance with protocols. 

• Professional and dedicated to ensure that the best interests of the clients and Care4Calais are represented at all times

Desirable: 

• Proficiency in one or more of the languages spoken within asylum seeking communities, such as but not limited to: Arabic, Farsi, Pashto, Dari, Kurdish Sorani, Tigrinya, Amharic.

A bit about this role

We need Fundraising Volunteers to help in and around Medway. The postcode areas we are active in are ME1, ME2, ME3, ME4, ME5, ME6, ME7, ME8.

We are a movement of people championing the welfare of cats. We lead society in a richer understanding of all cats and care for those that need our help. 

Our Volunteer led branches operate within local communities nationwide and rely on funds donated by generous members of the public to continue to help cats and kittens in need of new homes, supporting owners with neutering, managing trap, neuter and return programmes and educating people about cat welfare. 

Our fundraising volunteers are part of a passionate team that help raise funds to help cats. They help plan and deliver exciting and varied fundraising events, which can be anything from craft fairs, cake sales, sponsored abseils – and anything in between!

Time expectation 

Our fundraising volunteers usually spend 2 to 3 hours per week in this role. You can offer your time flexibly, seasonally or remotely and it can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed. 

Support, guidance and keeping you safe

At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.
