About us

Who we are

Akwaaba is a Sunday social centre for migrants. As a community- made up of migrants and non-migrants- we come together to create a space for rest, play, learning and support for both adults and children.

We prepare and eat a meal, we share experiences and we create opportunities to learn new skills and participate in group activities. We have also arranged online trainings and workshops, based on community interest and need.

Our culture and values

Akwaaba is a community of over 200+ volunteers and hundreds more members who regularly participate in activities. There are volunteer teams which take on responsibilities and tasks to support the running of Akwaaba activities. Anyone can be a volunteer.

As we believe in community decision-making and ensuring everyone’s voice be heard, we also have Akwaaba groups which are open to volunteers and other members. These groups can take actions to ensure we continue to build a safe and welcoming space for all.

Our key values are: Solidarity. Anti-racism, Compassion, Trust, Equality  &Self-challenge

What do our values mean?  Akwaaba is a community of people with many different backgrounds and experiences. We celebrate our diversity and welcome all migrants.  We want Akwaaba to be run in a genuinely non-hierarchical way and decisions are to be made collectively by the whole community. We strive to make sure that everyone’s voices can be heard and anyone can take on positions of responsibility.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

Akwaaba treats everyone who volunteers for us and our members with dignity and respect.  Accordingly, everyone representing Akwaaba has a responsibility to treat others with dignity and respect, in line with this policy and legal requirements.

The overall responsibility for implementing and monitoring the effectiveness of this policy rests with the board of trustees.  Coordinators and safer spaces volunteers have a crucial role to play in promoting equality and diversity in our Sunday sessions and remote activities.

All volunteers are given guidance and instruction, through induction and other training, as to their responsibility and role in promoting equality of opportunity and diversity.
