Refugee Support Devon aims to create a community where refugees can achieve their full potential and be treated as equal members of society. We support refugees and their families by providing the protection they need, aiding in their successful settlement within the local community, and helping them rebuild their lives with dignity and respect.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Board of Trustees at Refugee Support Devon. As Chair, you will have a unique chance to champion the charity’s mission to support and empower refugees and asylum seekers as they rebuild their lives.

What will you be doing?

The Chair leads the board of trustees, ensuring that it governs the charity effectively, in service of the charity’s vision and mission. The Chair leads in an inclusive way, supporting the board to work together well, and providing support and challenge to the manager. The Chair is also an ambassador for the charity.

Time Commitment is estimated as equivalent to 2-4 days per month.

• Experience of being a trustee or a CEO. (You do not need to have been a Chair before)

Access Social Care is a legal rights charity that exists to make sure disabled people, older people and carers get the social care they need. Term: 3 Years
Time Commitment: There are a minimum of three scheduled meetings across the year, in person in Leeds or via Microsoft Teams, with extra time needed for preparation.  We have an annual Board Away Day in November. About Us

Sculpt is a UK-based charity with over 20 years’ experience of working with young people aged 14-25 empowering them to shape their futures. Sculpt works with disadvantaged young people in their transition to adulthood, equipping them with life-skills, knowledge and practical work experience to support them to shape their futures. We work directly with young people and professionals/employers to break down barriers to opportunity.

All our work is guided by young people themselves and based on carefully researched evidence. We:

The Merchant’s House is embarking on an exciting new phase as we embed our new strategic plan, having opened for full visitor access for the first time in 2024. As the Merchant’s House looks to expand its work and programmes with improved visitor experiences, education, and events, we are seeking to enhance our board.

We are seeking two additional trustees who can bring experience in the following specific areas:

1) A trustee with practical experience and knowledge of the Museum or Heritage sector, to help guide our work to process our collections, improve interpretation and visitor experience, seek grant funding, and achieve Museum Accreditation. This Trustee will also sit on our Heritage Committee.

2) A trustee with retail or visitor services experience, to help guide direction for our gift shop, located in the ground floor of the House and a vital part of our revenue generation. As we embark on a new phase of visitor access, we need to breathe fresh life into our shop and ensure it is both commercially viable and supports the overall visitor experience to the historic house. This Trustee will also be a director of our Limited Trading Company.

Role on Trustee board:

· To oversee the strategic development and growth of the charity in line with its aims and objectives.

· To take an active lead in your agreed areas, agreeing short and long term objectives and ensuring the delivery of results.

· To be part of the Museum’s active management, working with other trustees and paid staff, running the museum as a business.

· To work effectively with other Trustees, employees and volunteers to improve the Trust’s operations and activities.

The Harrison & Potter Trust is a wonderful example of charitable settlements made many years ago that continue to make a significant impact on people’s lives today. 

It was established in 1970 when two old almshouse charities, the John Harrison's Hospital founded in April 1653 and the Mary Potter's Hospital founded in April 1728, merged to form the Harrison and Potter Trust. In 1972 a third charity, the Josiah Jenkinson's Pension Charity founded in May 1905, was taken under the wing of the Trust and subsequently fully amalgamated.

Background to the roles  

The Board of the Harrison and Potter Trust currently comprises nine Trustees including the Chair, although the two people who are currently responsible for the grant-giving will be leaving within the next six months. We recognise the need to enhance the Board and welcome new Trustees who will bring energy and a range of wider experience, knowledge and skills to support our important work. We are seeking motivated people who live locally or in the surrounding areas and who share our commitment to honour our settlors’ legacies to provide housing for older people and to support local charities. 

Main Responsibilities

• To lead collectively and ensure that the vision and purpose of the Charity are achieved 
• To ensure that the Charity complies with legal and regulatory requirements and acts in accordance with the terms of its constitution

As a Chair for our board, you will be instrumental in shaping the work and strategic direction of Home-Start Medway.  Your commitment and Leadership will ensure that we continue to provide a range of much needed support and services to families in Medway.Our small, friendly team of trustees are vital to the success of our charity and the role of Chair is key on the Board.

We are seeking to appoint a trustee with senior safeguarding expertise and experience, this may be from areas including social care, the Police, other statutory services, or the not-for-profit sector. 

ABOUT THE ROLE

The role of the Trustees is to develop Scouts in keeping with its charitable objectives and in the parameters of good governance. We are particularly looking for a Trustee to contribute their extensive senior level skills and experience in the area of Safeguarding and to Chair the Safeguarding Committee.

Main responsibilities

• To take part in formulating and regularly reviewing the strategic aims of the organisation, and in providing direction for its ongoing development, in accordance with the Bye Laws.
• To provide support as the Board’s safeguarding-focussed Trustee contributing specialist skills, experience and knowledge as required.
• With other Trustees, to ensure that the policy and practices of the Association are in keeping with its aims.
• With other Trustees, to exercise effective control, ensuring that the Association functions within the legal and financial requirements of a charitable organisation and strives to achieve best practice.
• With other Trustees, to fulfil all other duties as laid out by law and in accordance with the Bye Laws.
• To chair the Safeguarding Committee which is responsible for the strategic oversight and challenge to the organisation on the discharge of its safeguarding responsibilities.

Main duties

Developing and reviewing strategic aims

•  Consider the Association’s strategic plans and make sure they reflect safeguarding legislation, relevant regulations, statutory guidance, and the safeguarding expectations of the Charities Commission
• Work with the senior staff and volunteers to regularly review whether the practice of the Association is creating a safer culture and keeping people safe.
• Check that the Association’s risk register reflects current safeguarding risks appropriately and has put in place effective risk mitigations.
• Abide by the principles laid down in the person specification (and code of conduct).
• Attend meetings of the Trustee Board and the reporting committees (frequency varies).
• Reflect the Scouts’ vision, strategy, major policies and values at all times.

Ensuring policies and practice are effective and in keeping with aims

Make sure there is an annual review of safeguarding policies and procedures and that this is reported to trustees.

• Make sure there is a regular effective (internal and external) quality assurance framework using qualitative and quantitative data to monitor the effectiveness of safeguarding practice.
• Learn from case reviews locally and nationally, to improve the Association’s policies, procedures and practices.

Creating the right culture

• Champion safeguarding throughout the Association.
• Attend relevant safeguarding training events and conferences.
• Support the trustees in developing their individual and collective understanding of safeguarding.
• Attend meetings, activities, projects to engage with staff, volunteers and young people to understand safeguarding on the ground.
• Support regular safeguarding updates for staff, volunteers and young people.
• Make sure you have ways of gathering the views of staff and volunteers in relation to safeguarding and sharing these with the Board.
• Work effectively as a team member of the Trustee Board in exercising its responsibilities and functions.
• Protect the assets and integrity of the charity, with regard to best practice.
• Maintain good relations with Association staff.
• Fulfil such other duties and assignments as may be required from time to time by the Trustee Board.
• Engage with members of the Movement at other levels in the organisation.

THE PERSON

As a Trustee of the Board, you should be able to demonstrate and provide evidence of the following criteria listed under Part 1 within your written application. This will be tested further at the preliminary interview stage, along with the criteria listed under Part 2.

We are particularly interested in applications from candidates with strategic safeguarding experience in sectors such as Social Care (e.g. service manager to director role experience), Health (e.g. deputy or chief nurse experience), Police (e.g. Superintendent to Chief Constable experience) and Education (e.g. Head Teacher experience).

Part 1

• The successful candidate will be able to give evidence of:
• A record of proven and significant achievement and executive background in operational and strategic safeguarding.
• An understanding of the type of work undertaken by the Association and commitment to the values and ethos of The Scout Association.
• Successful experience of operating on a board or a major committee in a charitable, public sector or commercial organisation.
• Demonstrable experience of building and sustaining relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues to achieve organisational objectives.
• Confident and effective communication skills with a range of audiences, including Trustees, the Chief Executive, senior staff, senior volunteers and others, and the ability to challenge in a constructive way.

 Part 2

• An understanding of how to motivate and enthuse volunteers.
• A proven track record of sound judgement and effective decision-making.
• An understanding of the respective roles of the Chair, Trustees, UK Chief Commissioner and Chief Executive.
• A track record of commitment to promoting inclusion, equality and diversity.
• Wider involvement with the voluntary sector and other networks.
• Enthusiasm, energy and time to commit to this role.

Other essential criteria

• Commitment to attend four Board of Trustee meetings each calendar year, one of those will be a two-day residential held over the weekend).
• Attendance at the Annual General Meeting of the Council (AGM) held in the first week of September each year (this will be on a Saturday).
• Availability to chair the Safeguarding Committee, who meet four times per year. Three of these meetings are virtual and outside 9-5 working hours – the fourth meeting will be a full-day face-to-face session.

 APPOINTMENT TERM

Appointments are typically for an initial three-year term, with the possibility of a further term of three years subject to a satisfactory appraisal.

REMUNERATION AND EXPENSES

In common with other registered charities, there is no remuneration directly associated with the role, although the Association will reimburse fully for all reasonable and properly documented expenses incurred in performing duties.

SEED Madagascar is looking for two new Trustees to work on its Board of Trustees and with the Managing Director and his team.  One role is to be the Vice Chair to support our Chair across her role, and the second role is to bring fundraising expertise to support SEED in its vital work in Madagascar. 

SEED is growing and rising to the challenges that the country and its people are facing, and these Trustees will play an important role in SEED’s development.

SEED delivers impactful projects with communities in the southeast of Madagascar in the fields of community health, sustainable livelihoods, conservation and school infrastructure.  More recently SEED has responded to the famine affecting many families in the areas it works with emergency food distribution.

The new Trustees will bring experience of working at a senior level in the not-for-profit sector. The Vice Chair will bring governance experience, and the fundraising trustee will have experience of fundraising in organsiations of a similar size. We are looking for a passion for, and understanding of, international development, along with strong people skills and a good grasp of strategic planning.

Citizens Advice Esher & District is a well-established local advice charity that is seeking a HR professional to joins its trustee board and help deliver effective people management policies and plans.  If you’re excited to help us have the right team in place to meet the advice needs of our local community in Surrey, we would love to hear from you.

Our Trustee Board is responsible for providing us with strategic thinking.  As our Human Resources expert on the Board, you will work alongside the Chair, Personnel Sub-committee and Chief Executive to:

• Provide strategic and occasional operational advice on issues such as recruitment, employment contracts and remuneration
• Take a lead in reviewing the charity’s people management policies and procedures
• Advise on workforce planning and engagement to deliver our short and long term objectives
• Chair our Personnel sub-committee, setting the agenda for each six-monthly meeting and helping to prepare agenda papers

As a member of the Trustee Board, you will be responsible for:

● Maintaining an awareness of how our charity is operating

● Reading papers for Board meetings and attending six meetings per year

● Working on specific projects with other trustees or staff to further the strategic objectives of the charity

● Taking an active discussion during Board meetings and working with other trustees to:

- set policy and strategy direction, set targets and evaluate the performance of the charity

- ensure that all the finances and supporting financial control systems of the charity are in order

- monitor the financial position of the charity ensuring that it operates within its means and objectives

- monitor how well the service meets the needs of the local community

- ensure that the service plans for the recruitment and turnover of staff and volunteers

- review its own work and how effectively it operates including action for improvement

Person Specification

We need someone who either lives, works or studies in Elmbridge who has:

• HR experience with current knowledge of UK employment law, policy and practice, including compensation and benefits
• A commitment to the Citizens Advice organisation
• An understanding of the differences between managing the rights of employees and managing the rights of volunteers
• A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort

We are particularly keen to achieve a more diverse Board of Trustees and welcome applications from all sections of the community.  Experience of Citizens Advice work is not required.

Time commitment

Our Trustees are expected to attend six board meetings each year.  These normally take place on a Monday evening, alternating between 5-7pm and 7pm-9pm, at our office in Esher. There is an option to join most meetings online, although we encourage meeting in person.  Reading preparation for each Board meeting will take around one-two hours.  All Citizens Advice Trustees are required to complete a small number of e-learning courses each year.

You will also be asked to Chair and prepare papers for our Personnel sub-committee which meets six-monthly, and to offer ad-hoc support relevant to your expertise.

We are seeking to appoint a Trustee Safeguarding Lead to provide strategic oversight and leadership for the organisation, particularly in the area of Safeguarding.

The purpose of your role is to work alongside the other trustees to ensure that the Association is working towards its charitable purposes, is complying with all applicable rules and laws, and is making best use of its resources to achieve its aims.

Whilst safeguarding is the responsibility of all trustees, as Trustee Safeguarding Lead, you will  provide support to the CEO and the Operational Safeguarding Lead in their operational roles, promoting safeguarding within the organisation and our affiliated Nightlines, providing a strategic, advisory and governance role.

Trustees have legal responsibility for the Association’s management and administration. They are ultimately responsible for the Association’s work and are accountable to both the Association’s legal members and its regulators such as the Charity Commission for the good governance of the Association.

Trustees take considered and informed decisions in the best interests of the Association. Trustees are not expected to be experts on all areas of their work but are expected to seek guidance and support where necessary and to bring their own knowledge and experience to contribute to discussions.

We are recruiting for a new Treasurer to oversee our finances and are looking for someone with a formal qualification in a financial discipline and financial management experience at a strategic level to join our small but dynamic team. We are particularly interested in hearing from young people from all backgrounds and all experiences and welcome individuals who want to apply their knowledge and learn from our young people, staff and fellow Board members.  A full induction and training on the work of Sculpt will be provided. 

Role Description

Key tasks:

1. Specific Treasurer tasks

• Chair the Finance and Resources Group meetings held once a quarter
• Work with the Chief Executive to prepare and present financial reports to the quarterly Board meetings
• Keep the Board aware of their financial responsibilities
• Ensure that the accounts and financial systems are audited, as required by law
• Liaise with the Accountants/Auditors to complete end of year accounts
• Assist with filing annual accounts with the Charity Commission

2. General Trustee duties

• Assist in ensuring that the organisation pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document and legally operates
• Contribute actively to the Board of Trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
• Safeguard the good name and values of the organisation
• Represent the organisation at functions and meetings as appropriate
• Declare any conflict of interest whilst carrying out the duties of a trustee
• Take collectively responsible for the actions of the organisation and other trustees
• Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation
• Abide by all relevant policies and procedures
• Ensure the financial stability of the organisation
• Protect and manage the property of the organisation and to ensure the proper investment of the organisation’s funds
• Ensure the organisation is properly insured against all reasonable liabilities
• Assist in the appointment and support Senior Managers and monitor their performance
• Provide feedback on board papers, lead discussions, focus on key issues, provide advice and guidance on new initiatives
• Attend meetings and to read papers in advance of meetings
• Attend sub-committee meetings as appropriate
• Participate in other task as arise from time to time, such as interviewing new staff, helping with fundraising
