As a charity we are able to help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations we receive from members of the public. Our fundraising team leaders have the exciting and varied role of inspiring our fundraising volunteers to plan and deliver local fundraising events. Vegetarian for Life (VfL) is the only UK charity specifically dedicated to supporting older vegans and vegetarians. Our trustees work with the CEO and operational team to ensure good governance and realise the strategic aims and development of this unique charity. VfL has experienced sustained growth and impact since it was formed in 2007 and is highly respected for the breadth and quality of its work across care, advocacy, and catering sectors.
To prepare for changes in our board membership during 2025 we are seeking new trustees. Experience of business development including income generation would be particularly welcome.

- Charity Governance (as a trustee/chair).
The role of trustee is a voluntary one although expenses are paid when incurred in connection with the role. The board meets quarterly, mainly via video conferencing but with at least one meeting a year in Manchester where VfL is based. Full board meetings are held on a Saturday. Some communications occur between meetings (usually by WhatsApp or email) and occasionally additional (short) meetings are required to make decisions timeously – these will always be scheduled by arrangement with members.

About the role
The Ascent Counselling Service is a specialist therapeutic support service for women and girls aged 16 and over, who have experienced domestic and/or sexual abuse by an intimate partner or family member. This can include physical, emotional, psychological, sexual and financial abuse, coercive control, harassment, stalking and other harmful practices, such as FGM and honour-based violence.
Our counselling service is delivered as part of the Ascent Advice and Counselling partnership. Our counsellors create a safe space for survivors to explore the impact of abuse on their lives, help them to recover from the long-term impact and support them to make positive changes for themselves.
This opportunity is ideal for someone looking to gain experience in administration within a busy counselling team. The role will involve a range of administrative tasks such as:
- Data entry in our case management system
- Booking assessments/sessions appointments
- Sending appointment reminders to clients
- Gathering feedback, as well as other tasks as and when required.
Who are we looking for?
No formal qualifications are required for this role. We are looking for volunteers who have:

Five Talents is currently seeking 2-3 new trustees to join our UK Board. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing, impactful charity as we embark on Year 3 of a five year growth plan seeking to double the number of members we serve through community savings groups in eastern Africa.
We are particularly interested in people with the ability and desire to open doors into our key networks (City of London, Philanthropy, Faith, Women’s Empowerment, International Development) as growing our network of supporters is essential in this growth phase. We would also love to hear from anyone keen to be our cyber security / GDPR lead trustee.
Governance Structure
Five Talents UK is a member of Five Talents International, alongside Five Talents USA and Five Talents Kenya.Five Talents is a registered charity and company, and the Board of Trustees are also Directors of the Company, which is limited by guarantee. A copy of the governing documents and guidance on Trustee Roles and Responsibilities are made available to new Trustees as part of the Trustee induction.
The Board meets four times each year, typically in central London / Zoom. The Q1/Q2 meeting serves as the AGM at which the previous financial year’s audited accounts are approved.The Board has a Finance sub-Committee to review finance related matters and make recommendations to the Board. Historically it has also had a Programmes sub-Committee / Small Group which scrutinises and advises on the programmes which the charity supports, but this has evolved to become a sub-Committee of Five Talents International called the PQC - Programme Quality Committee.
Typically the Chair and two members of the UK Board are elected to serve on the Five Talents International (FTI) Board. This currently involves two in-person (or Zoom) meetings and two conference calls each year. FTI owns the licence to the brand name ‘Five Talents’ and sets overall strategy and mission for the different Five Talents entities, and has a particular focus on the programmes.
The Executive team consists of nine dedicated staff who work out of a small office in central London.
Purpose of Trustee Position
To provide leadership to the organisation in close co-operation with fellow Board Members and the Executive team, ensuring that all involved remain focused on achieving the Charity’s mission within its values and ethos.
Principal Responsibilities
- To be personally and visibly supportive of Five Talents’ Mission and Values.
- To attend Board meetings and Board away-days regularly and if unable to attend to provide comments / questions on the papers to the Chair and/or staff as appropriate.
- To contribute to setting the strategic direction and policies of the organisation, monitoring performance in meeting plans and key objectives.
- To serve on one or more working groups or sub-committees, as desired / invited.
- To ensure that management work effectively within a framework of clearly stated organisational strategies and policies.

- To ensure financial stewardship and regulatory compliance.
- To undertake visits to Five Talents’ Projects as is feasible.

This is a voluntary non-executive role. Reasonable travel expenses can be reimbursed if required. All Trustees will be required to sign Five Talents’ Safeguarding, Data Protection and Confidentiality Policies, and a declaration to confirm that they are not disqualified from acting as Trustees and there are no other reasons which would de-bar them from serving as Trustees. They are also required to declare any conflicts of interest at the start of each meeting.

The usual process is for a trustee candidate to have an initial meeting with the Chair or CEOs, followed (if both parties wish) by your submission of a CV and short statement of interest which is shared with the Board. If, after reviewing your application and further discussions with you, both parties remain interested, the Board would invite you to attend a Board meeting as an observer, so that you can meet other Trustees. We are looking for governors of all ages and backgrounds to help drive our ambition for the children we serve. While being a governor is a ‘hands off, eyes on’ role, it is still a real chance to make a difference - you would be offering advice, guidance and support to the school board and making sure school resources are optimally used.
We particularly welcome those with knowledge of education, finance, human resources, legal matters, marketing, public relations, property and estates management as well as organisational change. Training will be provided to help you in your role, and we provide a paid membership to the NGA, a bespoke resource for school governors to help develop your skills in governance. Being a governor makes you think about how and why schools work well, and how – without being hands-on – you can use your life skills and experience to support and challenge people working in them to be as effective as possible.
What are we looking for?
You need to be able to work as part of a team, be committed to collective responsibility and have the ability to think strategically. You will need to be passionate about children’s life chances.
You will need to be comfortable with finding the time to read a number of papers to prepare for meetings, and confident to ask challenging questions and learn about the school.
Ideally, you will be able to come into school during the school day for school visits, perhaps for a minimum of three times per year. You will be entitled to the right to have reasonable time off work to complete your public duties as governor (like a magistrate or a member of a jury) and it is worth considering and asking your HR department or line manager if there are incentives or policies around employee volunteering if applicable.
What difference will you make?
Being a governor is the most important voluntary role in education. An effective governing body can be a source of strength to the school, helping it to look for the best solutions. This position offers the chance to make serious differences at a local level.

Our retail stores are the face of our charity on the high-street and in local communities. We have loads of amazing stock donated to us every week, and this all needs to be sorted, tagged and put on the shop-floor for sale!
Making sure our shops look fantastic is another task you can get involved with. You may also be required to help out on the till too, but we will show you how that works during your time volunteering with us. We value the contribution of everyone who supports Barnardo’s.
You will be a friendly face of Barnardo’s by volunteering in one of our shops. It would be great if you could volunteer one shift a week (or even more if you want) but we’re always happy to be flexible to work around your availability.
