Job description

Women for Women International - UK (WfWI-UK) is looking for new trustees!

In 1993, after meeting survivors of wartime rape in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iraqi activist Zainab Salbi had a vision for an organisation where women could find support, solidarity, and practical skills to rebuild their lives after the ordeals of conflict. More than thirty years later, Women for Women International has reached over half a million of the most marginalised women in the world, helping them to access power and transform their lives and communities. We offer women in conflict-affected countries vocational and business skills training, rights awareness, health education, and additional emotional and social support through a year-long training programme.

WfWI is a global organisation. National organisations in the UK (since 2005) and Germany (since 2016) play a major role in fundraising from individuals as well as institutions, foundations and corporate donors. In 2019, a new global strategy, with a more unified organisational structure was adopted. The WfWI-UK Board is now recruiting new trustees to diversify and strengthen our leadership and ensure the organisation is well governed and able to play its part in delivering the vision, mission and strategy of the global organisation.

Diversity at Women for Women International is about inclusion, embracing differences, creating possibilities and growing together for better performance. We embrace diversity in our Board. This means giving full and fair consideration to all applicants regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, political opinions, and pregnancy and maternity. Applications are welcomed and encouraged from all interested parties.

We are specifically looking for new trustees with knowledge and skills in three key areas – these have been identified as having charity / NGO finance experience; a commercial background; and conflict and / or crisis context experience.

We are looking for people who are passionate about our mission and believe in what we do. You do not need to have been a trustee before, as full induction and training will be provided. The application pack gives further details of the role.

One of our trustees would welcome the opportunity to chat with you informally before you submit an application, to answer any questions you may have.

Being a trustee is a voluntary, unpaid role with an expected minimum time commitment of approximately 12 days a year. We expect trustees to prepare for and attend Board meetings 3 times a year and to join at least one Board committee, also meeting 3 times per year. Reasonable expenses may be paid for attending meetings and other Board-related activities.
