Great opportunity to make a real difference to lives of homeless and vulerable people in West London. Co-ordinating, organising and supporting our historic events calendar.
The charity.
The Upper Room has been supporting both homeless and ex-offender communities since the early 1990's. Over the years we have grown with demand and have a range of structured programmes and projects that support vulnerable and disadvantaged people in West London. in 2023 we cooked and served c33000 free hot meals, and enabled more than 40 people from the prison system to attain their driving licences. In 2024, these numbers are increasing again - so we're working both harder - and smarter, to keep up with the ever-increasing demand. Over the years we have built a varied events programme, drawing in both existing and new supporters, raising local awareness about what we do and of course generating much-needed income.
The role
Is planning, co-ordinating and managing an events calendar which runs mainly from Winter into Spring. This includes our Christmas Carol concert, a series of 3 lectures/'an evening with' spoken word events featuring local stars from stage and screen and the broader arts world, a quiz night and attendance at the local flagship event in June each year - The Green Days Festival in Chiswick. Each event will have its own admin trail and the need for regular chasing and confirming roles and actions with all participants - sometimes with TUR staff, sometimes with other volunteers, and sometimes with various celebs and their agents. Being present at each event (mainly evenings apart from Green-Days which is over a weekend in June) in a mix of overseeing and hands-on roles to make sure everything runs smoothly is also an essential part of the role.
About you
Ideally you have some experience of setting up and managing events in a professional capacity - but this is not essential. If you are a high energy, highly organised person who is passionate about giving something back to their community, we would still very much like to hear from you. This is a hugely worthwhile volunteer role with a highly measurable impact, it will have its challenges so we are looking for someone who can take things in their stride and essentially 'keep calm and carry on' ! Not every event runs exactly to plan, so the ability to plan contingencies and be creative is highly advantageous.
