Job description

The National Museum of Computing (TNMoC) is home to the world’s largest collection of working computers from the 1940s through to the present day. Our mission is to bring to life the history and ongoing development of computing in all its aspects for inspiration, research, learning and enjoyment for the benefit of general and specialist audiences of all ages.

A national asset, TNMoC is Arts Council England accredited as a nationally styled museum. We are now looking to strengthen and widen our Board of Trustees membership and would like to hear from individuals with a wide range of relevant experience and perspectives.

Diversity is important to us and we would encourage applications from a broad range of applicants, especially currently under-represented groups.

We are looking for Trustees who share a passion for our mission and want to help us drive it forwards. We seek new Trustees with the ability to think strategically, assess opportunities and manage risk to join and strengthen our existing Board, help provide oversight of staff and volunteers, and with experience in the public, private, or voluntary sector.

We are hoping to grow our board to reinforce our existing knowledge, skills and experiences.  In addition, we would particularly welcome applications from people with a background in the following areas:

●      Professional museum curatorial leadership

●      Professional archive leadership

●      Publishing research into the history of computing

●      Philanthropic fundraising

●      Property acquisition, development and management

●      Human resources and organisational development

We appoint our Trustees for a renewable three year term.  All our Trustees are volunteers and are expected to meet their own out of pocket expenses. We ask our Trustees to attend up to 8 formal Board meetings a year plus additional involvement in executive committee work and special projects. The Board normally meets on Thursdays, generally alternating between on-site and virtual meetings. Committee and Project work is generally through virtual or hybrid meetings but some additional attendance at the museum outside of board meetings is expected. Through these additional activities we expect our Trustees to engage proactively with our staff and volunteers.
