Job description

RABBIT SOCIALISER

RSPCA OXFORDSHIRE

Can you sit and make a fuss of our rabbits whilst they wait for their new fur-ever home? Volunteer at our animal centre Paws and Claws in Harwell and get cuddles all day whilst knowing that you are directly improving their welfare.

Overview of the opportunity

As a Rabbit Socialiser, you would be supporting the RSPCA by giving our rabbits your love and attention at our animal centre located in Harwell whilst tending to their welfare needs. In addition to this, by providing them with your time and patience, you will play a crucial role in a rabbit’s wellbeing and socialisation, significantly improving their chances of successful rehoming.

Many of the rabbits in our care have never experienced life in a loving, family home, so this plays a vital role in bridging the gap until they find their forever home. You will be supported and directed by the Operations Manager.

About the Animal Centre

We are the Oxfordshire RSPCA Branch, and it is our vision to live in a world where all animals are respected and treated with compassion. Our volunteers are incredible and play an essential role in helping us carry out our vital animal welfare work every day.

Whilst at the animal centre you will:

  •  Spend time with the rabbits in the pens, actively playing with the rabbits and encouraging mobility from the rabbits.
  •   Assist with the feedings regime and improving their environment by making enrichment items.
  • Clean litter trays.
  •  Clean pen area when necessary.
  •  To read information on display for each rabbit before socialising with the rabbit, and to comply with dietary requirements e.g. no treats.
  • Where appropriate, and in consultation with staff, encourage the rabbit to socialise and feel comfortable with other people around.
  •  Keep records updated as directed by the rehoming staff.
  •  Attend appropriate training courses required for the role.
  • Adhere to any other guidelines and notices about the welfare of the rabbits in the centre.
  •  Groom and socialise the rabbits, being mindful that each will have their own temperament and character.
  •  Follow current administrative health and safety procedures and ensure that they are observed in all aspects of work.
  • Liaise with colleagues in the centre, branch staff and volunteers and update them on the rabbits welfare when needed.

  • Feels comfortable around rabbits and has a patient and understanding nature.
  • Someone who is flexible and can offer an ongoing commitment predominately during the weekdays.
  • Can carry out physical tasks.

  • You will need to be aged 18 or over or have an adult with them at all times.
