About Us

Islington Law Centre provides high quality, free, independent advice and legal representation to enable people to improve their lives; and seeks to influence law, policy and practice.

We work with people on low or no incomes, who could not afford to pay for a lawyer.

Our passion is fighting poverty in Islington and beyond by giving specialist legal help to the most vulnerable people. We believe that access to justice is the cornerstone of any fair and equitable society.

 

What will you be doing?

Islington Law Centre is a charity providing free legal advice and casework in specialist areas of social welfare law. We advise on housing, immigration, welfare rights, education and debt and run an out-of-hours clinic for limited civil litigation matters for people who cannot afford a lawyer. 

 

Time Commitment:

  • Mostly outside office hours, mainly at home
  • Estimate of time needed: 0-5 hours / month
  • We have 6 Trustee meetings per year.

 

What are we looking for?

  1. For the Treasurer position - A qualified accountant or having skills in relation to issues set out under the Role description above.
  2. Commitment to the organisation with willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to perform an effective role.
  3. Strategic vision and ability to think creatively.
  4. Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
  5. Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  6. Good, independent judgement.
  7. Tact and diplomacy, impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences.
  8. Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  9. Adherence to Nolan's seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership
