Job description

London Marathon Foundation - Trustees

Over the past four decades, the London Marathon Foundation (LMF) has awarded over £100 million to more than 1,500 projects which inspire activity across the UK. That means when people enter an event with London Marathon Events (LME), they are not just benefiting their own health, they are also contributing to the health and wellbeing of the nation.

As the parent organisation, LMF’s Board of Trustees is ultimately responsible for both organisations. With group oversight, the role of the Trustees is to ensure the two entities deliver on their strategies and actions, both independently and collectively, to deliver the biggest joint impact.

We work hard to ensure grants awarded meet our mission and vision with 55 sports and activities receiving funding since 1981, ranging from athletics to archery and swimming to skateboarding.

LMF targets funding where it’s most needed, reaching those who most need support to get active and stay active. We work collaboratively with a wide range of partners to ensure that we work in the communities that stand to benefit the most from the transformational effects of physical activity and sport.

We are looking for Trustees with one or more of the following experiences/backgrounds:

  • Legal experience including charity law and regulation
  • An understanding of local government in or outside of London
  • Community/place-based sport/recreation for social change and/or sport/recreation to generate positive social impact
  • Track record of organisational management and leadership

If you are interested in making a difference to inspire activity and can contribute strategically on a wide range of issues and demonstrate empathy with the aims and objectives of LMF, LME and the group as a whole, please see further information via the dedicated microsite.

These are non-remunerated roles, however we will pay any reasonable expenses in order to support attendance at Board meetings for example, travel, travelling on trustee business, and providing childcare or care of other dependants while attending to trustee business.

Our belief, as supported by our Vision and Mission is that Activity is for everyone, and our aim is to connect people and communities through experiences that change lives. The Foundation is committed to achieving greater diversity on its Board, and welcomes applications regardless of sex, gender, race, religion or belief, age, sexuality or disability, or any other factor which is not objectively justified.

Recruitment Timetable

The Foundation is interested in candidates who bring relevant lived or professional experience of the issues of disadvantage; a broad understanding of the charitable sector (and ideally of grantmaking) and its key issues; experience of working with and/or on Boards. Trustees should be able to commit around 8-12 days per year.
