Youth Helper work directly with young people in St John Ambulance Badger Setts and Cadet Units. By support our Youht Leaders to deliver a sessions across our range of programmes. In this role, you'll support the learning and development of young people into the next generation of health citizens. Youth Helpers also help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be, as well as supervise and support other adult volunteers in their team.
You’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time.
As a youth helper there is a requirement for you to attend weekly meetings, at least 2 per month, during term time. Relevant training for the role will be given.

Welcome Event (Induction): Induction will take place online w/c 21st April 2025. You will be assigned an existing volunteer as an Induction Buddy to help you begin your volunteering journey.
Training for role - The Community First Aider course is a 2-day course on 3rd and 4th May 2025 in Kidlington. If you have a First Aid at Work certificate, you may be able to complete training on 3rd May only. This can be discussed at interview

Sense Holidays provide children, young people, and adults with complex disabilities the chance to enjoy new experiences, meet people, and have fun. These holidays take place at venues across the UK and typically last 4 to 5 days, including overnight stays.
Volunteering on one of our Sense holidays gives you the opportunity to share your skills to make a real difference. You will be supporting our holiday makers (children, young people, and/or adults with complex disabilities) to enjoy a holiday tailored to their needs and interests, full of fun and new activities.
Whether you are helping an individual or supporting the group, you may be needed at various times during the day and evening. Our Sense Holiday volunteers must be over the age of 18 and must be able to travel independently to the holiday location.
What you will be doing on a Sense Holiday
- Provide support for the holiday makers, encouraging them to participate and join in.
- Support Holidaymakers by finding ways to make activities accessible, with consideration on their personal communication needs.
- Building friendships with the Holidaymakers, supporting with social communication.
- Communicating any concerns, asking questions and working with your Holiday Coordinator before and during the Sense Holiday.
- Providing feedback, sharing ideas and helping create a fun atmosphere.
- Supporting Sense to maintain a safe environment for everyone and raising any concerns with the team.

Skills required
- Committed to supporting people with complex disabilities to communicate and experience the world.
- Previous experience supporting people of any age with disabilities and a commitment to developing skills to meet the individual needs of holidaymakers.
- Confident in adapting communication methods to effectively connect with individuals who have multi-sensory impairments. British Sign Language (BSL) level 3 or above is desirable.
- Cheerful, encouraging, and ready to embrace fun activities while inspiring others to do the same.
- Values diversity and appreciates others’ preferred communication styles.

Community First Aiders would be expected to attend the majority of these sessions in order to maintain their level of training, interact with the Network, and help to organise key Network activity.
Volunteers in this role are expected to deliver at least 80 hours of community delivery a year. This can include community first aid, education, or fundraising.

Working hands-on to deliver inpatient surgical care to our patients, the Ward Nurses work around the clock to see that each and every patient receives the care and attention they deserve.
• Administer holistic patient care to assigned patients and expect to care for both adults and children on a 20 bed open ward
• Employ recent surgical experience in providing pre- and post-operative care to patients receiving maxillofacial, reconstructive plastic, general, obstetric fistula repair, gynecological or orthopedic surgery. Experience in one of these surgical specialties preferred
• Partner with local Day Crew translators to provide culturally sensitive and compassionate care to patients
• Coordinate patient care with the specialty Team Leaders, Charge Nurses, Hospitalist Physicians and Surgeons

The Crew Nurse coordinates healthcare for our volunteer Crew and our local Day Crew. You will support the Crew Physician and oversee the work of the Crew Clinic Administrative Assistant in establishing and maintaining a well-functioning Crew Clinic, supporting our volunteers with the best possible care when needed.
What You Will Contribute
• Arrange appointments for Crew who are ill or need exams or check-ups
• Maintain accurate Crew health records and adequate stock levels of supplies
• Maintain universal precautions at all times
• Record, track and administer immunisations of incoming and current longer term Crew
• Facilitate tuberculosis screenings for Crew and Day Crew
• Give regular health talks to inform Crew about Crew Clinic services and common illnesses and risks
• Assist with the Duty Nurse roster to provide after-hour coverage for Crew when the Crew Clinic and Hospital are closed
• Identify and facilitate maintenance of all non-marine first-aid kits on the ship and at the Education, Training, and Advocacy program support facilities

What You Will Contribute
• Provide medical consultations and treatment for our Crew, including regular check-ups, routine health screenings, and emergency care when needed
• Support the health education to our Crew and host country partners by presenting on applicable health related topics
• Ensure the health and safety of the Crew on an ongoing basis, in collaboration with the Captain
• Work with and supervise the Hospital Physician(s) to oversee the general health of Ward patients and pre-operative patients
• Review patients in Screening, Outpatients, and Rehabilitation as the opportunity arises
• Actively maintain and improve the standards of care for our patients
• Provide medical direction and advice for the Palliative Care Team

The Housekeeping Staff work as a team to ensure excellence in cleanliness and hygiene of the Hospital and public ship areas, led by the Housekeeping Team Leader.
What You Will Contribute
•Responsible for the cleanliness, disinfectant, and general tidiness of the ship’s hospital, public areas, offices, and laundry facilities.
•Empty waste baskets and dispose of trash.
•Inform the team lead of any supplies or equipment that need to be replaced or restocked.
•Keep housekeeping closets organized and stocked.
•Report routine maintenance requests as well as any breaks, damages, or safety issues to the team lead.
•Responsible for laundry services; collection, separation, washing, drying, ironing, folding, and delivery. (Note: hospital laundry is subject to regulated handling.)
•Clean, organize, and sanitize public areas of the vessel.
•Attend and participate in departmental devotions and all meetings called for by the community.
•Regular working hours are 8 am to 5 pm (day shift) or 7 pm to 7 am (night shift), Monday – Friday.
•All staff are subject to rotating on-call, evening, overnight, and weekend hours as needed.
•Due to ever-changing staffing levels and field service demands, all staff may be reassigned to temporarily fill other roles within the Stewards department as needed.

Provide holistic end-of-life care to people who are suffering of a terminal illness, under the direction of the Palliative Care Nurse Team Leader. By caring for those often isolated, hopeless, and fearful, this position is a living example of God’s love and compassion for the weak, lonely, and marginalised members of society. This position works primarily off-ship; hot and dusty or wet (depending on season) conditions can be expected. Visiting people in their house requires cultural sensitivity.
What You Will Contribute
• Support terminally ill patients and their family members through the grieving process, preparing them for death
• Train and assist family members with wound care for the afflicted person
• Share basic health principles with terminally ill patients and family members in order to improve their health
• Encourage the use of local, affordable materials for wound care and locally available analgesia
• Encourage the family to find ways to be self-supporting and teach them about planning for the future
• Assist in reaching out to local healthcare professionals who care for palliative patients, build meaningful relationships, assess their practical and intellectual needs and assist them in sustainable and culturally appropriate ways, through mentoring and teaching
