Job description

Volunteers needed to support a Young Volunteers group (13-17 year olds) in North Cumbria

We wish to enhance Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s work with young volunteers aged 13-17. The group will be based in the north of the county at our Gosling Sike office, with plans to travel to reserves or sites owned by partners.

The group will initially be organised by Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s volunteering coordinator, with skilled staff leading the physical conservation sessions. Volunteers will be asked to become supportive figures to help the young attendees successfully get involved in a range of nature-based activities, from physical outdoor work to indoor campaigning to community-based volunteering.

The volunteers will be needed for a range of tasks including completing head counts, filling in paperwork, contributing to planning sessions, working with a group to support them in developing skills such as surveying and monitoring, and ensuring no one is left out.

No specific skills are needed but volunteers must genuinely enjoy working with people. DBS checks will be sought due to the nature of the work.

Potentially suitable for wheelchair users. We would welcome a conversation with volunteers to see how we could make this work.

Role not suitable for under 16s

Location: Based at Gosling Sike with plans to travel to sites across the north of the county

Commitment: The group will meet monthly on the first Sunday of the month, from 10am to 2pm. There is some discussion about running more flexible sessions to meet the Duke of Edinburgh awards criteria. This is to be decided.

Training/Resources: Opportunities for training, such as First Aid training and safeguarding, will become available.
