What is the Access Foundation all about?

The Access Foundation was set up in 2021, following the success and growth of The Access Group. While The Access Foundation is affiliated with the Access Group in terms of its identity, the Foundation is a separate organisation, governed by an independent board of trustees and with its own objectives. 

The Access Foundation is focused on awarding grants to charities which make a valuable and measurable positive impact.  The grant giving objectives of the Foundation fall into three categories: 

1. to bridge the digital divide by making computing facilities, support and learning available to disadvantaged and vulnerable people

1. to advance the charitable causes of the registered charities chosen as the "Access Group Company Charities of the Year"

1. to help charities nominated by employees of the Access group with which they have strong emotional connections with.  

The Foundation funds charitable projects and activities which make a real difference to people’s lives in all the countries where the Access Group operates, and we aim to award grants to a total value of at least £10 million over the next 5 years.

This is an exciting time to join The Foundation, with opportunities to develop your skills and help shape our future. If you are committed, enthusiastic and known to make a difference, please apply. The Role of Trustee at The Access Foundation 

The trustees of the Access Foundation are responsible under the charity’s governing document for controlling the administration and management of the charity, known collectively as the Board of Trustees.  The Board is responsible for the direction of The Foundation and ensures it is solvent, well run and delivers on our charitable objectives.  

As a trustee to the Foundation, you’ll attend: 

• Two regular online weekly meetings to review grant applications and to ensure the operational management of the Foundation, totalling about 2.5 hours 

• An all-day team meeting in person (every 2 months, usually in London) to progress the above, as well as progressing strategy 

• Completing actions as agreed in the meetings above. 

The total time commitment is expected to be at least 6 hours per week. 

Desirable Qualities 

As a trustee, you will show: 

• Your commitment to the organisation and willingness to devote the necessary time and effort. 

• You’re an advocate of equal opportunity, and you actively promote diversity. 

• Good and independent judgement and you’re willing to speak your mind.

• Strategic vision and your ability to think creatively and challenge current thinking and operating, in a constructive manner. 

• You work effectively as a member of a team. 

• Your ability to evaluate and interpret management information and other data. 

• You’re well versed in Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel and the Office365 environment 

• You can deliver “hands on” services to the organisation

Skills and Experience Required 

As a trustee, you can demonstrate specific knowledge and experience in one or more of these areas: 

• Charity law, compliance and governance, 

• Grant management, particularly within an international context as well as the UK, 

• Leadership or management of a medium to large organisation, ideally with multiple and/or diverse sites or subsidiaries, 

• Financial management, specifically investment and treasury functions, 

• Data analysis and/or research. 

• Change management, 

• Monitoring and evaluating performance in the commercial and/or not for profit sector, 

• Recruitment and human resources expertise, including employment legislation, 

• Business development, 

• Risk management, 

• Marketing, media and PR, 

• Business or intellectual property law. 

Duties and responsibilities 

The Trustees of the Access Foundation: 

• Ensure the Foundation achieves its charitable objects as defined in the Articles of Association, by establishing a clear vision, a set of values and strategy, and ensuring that there is a common understanding of these by trustees, staff and associated personnel. 

• Ensure that operational plans and budgets support the vision and strategy of the Foundation and uses its resources exclusively to pursue our charitable objectives. 

• Ensure that the views of stakeholders are regularly sought and considered and there is regular review of the external environment for changes that might affect the organisation (political, financial, demographic, competitive, partnerships, alliances). 

• Ensure that the organisation complies with the Articles of Association, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations. 

• Ensure the financial stability of the organisation, protect and manage the assets of the organisation (financial or otherwise) and ensure the proper investment of its funds. 

• Ensure the Foundation acts in accordance with employment law and exercises a duty of care to its employees. 

• Ensure a well thought through risk management process is in place and give serious consideration to procuring external professional advice on any matter that presents a material risk to the charity that is beyond the established risk management process, or where the trustees could be perceived to be in breach of their duties. 

• Ensure that the organisation has a fit for purpose governance structure that is appropriate to a charity of its size/complexity, stage of development, and its charitable objects, and reflects the diversity of its stakeholders. 

• Ensure that the board regularly reviews its own training needs and creates an expectation of continuous professional development throughout the organisation. 

• Ensure that trustees have an agreed code of conduct and comply with it, and that there are mechanisms for the removal of trustees who do not abide by the principles stated therein 

The applications close on the 15th February and the interview process will start w/c 17th February. We are looking for 2 trustees and look to appoint mid-March.

Using your social media skills, help us to promote our environmental messaging and campaigns by increasing awareness through reaching new audiences for support. A focus in this role will be supporting us with our involvement in the GoParksLondon project and sharing the content provided by editorial volunteers.

By volunteering with us you’ll be helping to find positive solutions for the issues
facing the countryside and the environment. By applying your skills and
experience you can make a real difference and be a central part of a friendly
and passionate charity.

Our social media channels are a key part in bringing our work to a wider
audience and attracting new people to support us. As a social media volunteer,
you’ll write regular posts on our social channels and engage with followers to
encourage them to get involved with our activities.

We’re ideally looking for volunteers with experience in managing social media
channels for professional or personal use, who can preferably offer us at least a 3-6 month commitment.

Working pattern 

Hours: 7-14 hours per week 

Pattern: delivery can be flexible but availability on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays (Head of Campaigns' working days) would be beneficial. Location: Hybrid - with weekly office attendance on one of the above days.

East London Waterworks Park is looking for comms strategists and PR managers to help grow East London Waterworks Park's audiences.

East London Waterworks Park is a charity that has raised £2m towards buying land from the Department for Education to transform the 14-acre Thames Water Depot on Lea Bridge Road on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney, into a new biodiverse park with natural swimming ponds, forest schools and community spaces. 

We are looking for communications strategists and PR to participate in our community-led working group who are promoting public awareness and support of the project. 

There is opportunity to lead on projects across communications, content creation, social media, PR, newsletters, film, podcasts or any other channels of interest, and facilitate the direction of the working group.

The Comms Circle currently meets fortnightly on a Tuesday evening on Google Meet and spends voluntary time outside of the meeting completing agreed tasks remotely.

You should be experienced in implementing effective strategic communications, managing media relations and social media platforms by creating engaging content, and building online communities. Strong writing and editing skills for various materials including press releases and social media posts. Comfortable with community-led processes. Our roles are quite flexible. Contribute to the creation of a new biodiverse community-owned park with free access natural swimming ponds. Your strategic communication will be instrumental in fostering a strong connection between our community, the park, and its biodiversity. Your input will help us craft compelling narratives that inspire, educate, and engage our service users, stakeholders, funders, and the general public, ultimately driving support for the park's mission and ensuring its long-term sustainability.

Web developers and designers wanted to support East London Waterworks Park in continuing to improve its website and digital infrastructure.

East London Waterworks Park is a volunteer-led charity that has won a 2024 New London Architecture award and raised £2m towards buying land from the Department for Education to transform the 14-acre Thames Water Depot on Lea Bridge Road on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney, into a new biodiverse park with natural swimming ponds, forest schools and community spaces. 

We are looking for web developers and designers to contribute to our community-led working group who are working on coordinating content and infrastructure for the East London Waterworks Park website. 

There is opportunity to lead on projects across web development and UX and web design, and facilitate the direction of the working group.

Fundraisers wanted to support East London Waterworks Park in developing and implementing our fundraising strategy.

East London Waterworks Park is a volunteer-led charity that has won a 2024 New London Architecture award and raised £2m towards buying land from the Department for Education to transform the 14-acre Thames Water Depot on Lea Bridge Road on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney, into a new biodiverse park with natural swimming ponds, forest schools and community spaces. 

We are looking for fundraisers to contribute to our community-led fundraising strategy, to develop relationships with funders and to write funding applications. 

You would join our fundraising circle, which coordinates our fundraising efforts. It is currently exploring grant opportunities and developing relationships with businesses and other funders. We meet online on Google Meet and volunteers complete agreed tasks remotely. 

If you have experience in writing grants and funding applications, corporate fundraising, philanthropy, or any other aspect of fundraising, it would be great to hear from you. 

We are keen fundraisers but we are lacking professional expertise and experience and we would love your help and input. We would welcome one-off advice on the phone or in person, as well as longer term volunteers. 

We would also love to hear from potential volunteers without experience but with transferable skills.

Educators and facilitators wanted to help East London Waterworks Park deliver its environmental learning goals.

East London Waterworks Park is a volunteer-led charity that has won a 2024 New London Architecture award and raised £2m towards buying land from the Department for Education to transform the 14-acre Thames Water Depot on Lea Bridge Road on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney, into a new biodiverse park with natural swimming ponds, forest schools and community spaces. 

We are looking for educator and facilitator volunteers to participate in our community-led working group, who are collaborating with schools, universities and youth groups that help the design of the park. 

Examples of projects are: 

• collaborating on nature walk activities for schools
• supporting university students interviewing teachers
• creating lesson plans to co-design the park.

You should be an experienced teacher, educational consultant, forest school leader, training and development specialist, learning designer, facilitator or any other kind of role creating learning projects, programmes and experiences. Our roles are quite flexible. We hope that people bring radical imagination, peace with nature, and courageous inclusiveness to the role. 

Your support will help young people and learners improve their environmental knowledge of design and research as well as contributing to our community-owned park. This will in turn provide a sense of stewardship over the land once the park is created and student's ideas have been built into the park. 

Creating learning projects with educational institutions will also help our charity with the strategy to buy the land through showing the value of our environmental education programme before we create the park.

Volunteering with us is an excellent opportunity to gain new skills and work experience, explore this beautiful area of mid Wales and the Snowdonia National Park, and meet a range of interesting and friendly new people all working together on solutions to the climate and biodiversity emergency.

In this exciting residential placement, you will learn gardening practices that focus on regeneration and biodiversity through the seasons.

During the residential you will learn how to prepare and support gardens. This could include landscaping, essential maintenance, winter planting for colour and crop and supporting wildlife. 

Volunteering with the CAT gardens team helps to provide beautiful, healthy, diverse and peaceful outdoor spaces for visitors, educational groups and CAT staff to learn from and enjoy.

Full food and board provided.

About us:

We are a small friendly board of Directors/Trustees running a thriving charity that serves the communities in Exeter and its surrounding areas. We have two part-time paid staff and 8 volunteers.

The charity runs a warehouse and shop that makes a positive social and environmental impact by re-using clean post-industrial waste that would be sent directly to landfill. It’s an Aladdin’s cave of materials offering inspiration for creative and educational projects, and used by a wide range of users. These include individuals and families, creative practitioners, community groups, schools and higher education.

As well as reclaimed materials from businesses and industries, our shop offers second-hand and quality arts and crafts items at affordable prices.

Our charity is entering an exciting new phase, which includes refitting the retail space to make it more user-friendly and provide much needed inventory sorting space.

We meet 6 times a year.
