Community Development Officer

The Communities Officer will lead a new community-focused initiative aimed at increasing access to Cambridge Science Centre’s educational offerings. Through researching areas of need and collaborating with community leaders, the officer will develop a robust network of partnerships to facilitate participation from children facing barriers to engagement.

Key Responsibilities

• Community Research & Needs Assessment: Identify key areas within Cambridge where children face barriers to accessing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) engagement. Use data-driven approaches and community feedback to conduct needs assessments, supporting the development of evidence-based strategies and action plans with relevant partners and community organisations.

• Partnership Development: Establish and maintain strong relationships with local community leaders, and organisations that can help ensure the Centre’s programmes reach the right audiences.

• Programme Development: Develop, co-design, and coordinate events with a place-based approach or under a thematic area. Collaborate with the Head of Programmes & Delivery and the Head of Exhibitions to design and implement 1 tailored after-school, school-day and weekend programmes that address community-specific needs, including logistical barriers such as transport and scheduling.

• Outreach & Communication: Maintain regular contact with community stakeholders, building trust and ensuring effective two-way communication. Act as the primary liaison between Cambridge Science Centre and community partners.

• Volunteer Engagement: Work with volunteers as needed to support programme delivery and community outreach efforts.

• Monitoring & Evaluation: Track the impact of community programmes, gathering feedback and adjusting strategies to improve engagement and outcomes continually. Maintain records, produce relevant statistics, and prepare and present reports as required.

• Promotion: Serve as a brand ambassador for Cambridge Science Centre within the community. Leverage social media and local communication channels to engage and support community members. Collaborate with the Head of Marketing to develop and share impactful case studies and stories, helping to raise broader awareness of CSC’s work.

Person Specification

• Prior experience in community development, education, or outreach, particularly with underrepresented groups

This role involves regular travel across Cambridge and occasional evening or weekend commitments to meet with community partners and deliver programmes. Occasional office work may be required at CSC’s Head Office at 44 Clifton Road, Cambridge CB1 7ED.

Standard working hours are 7.5 hours per day

About the role

The purpose of this role is to confidently manage a portfolio of offline and online direct marketing fundraising and communications projects, contributing to the Public Fundraising income targets and KPIs.

Main duties and responsibilities

1. Project Management
   • Independently plan and project manage a portfolio of multi-channel direct marketing fundraising campaigns including, but not limited to, cash appeals, legacy marketing, supporter newsletters, committed giving appeals and emergency appeals.
   • Deliver each project from start to finish. Source content and create briefs, liaise with suppliers and internal stakeholders, create and oversee data selections, exports and imports, and manage sign off process.
   • Lead on all elements and deliverables for each project or campaign (cold and warm) – budgeting, stewardship plan, telemarketing, mailing, email, social and digital.
   • Lead in content sourcing and sharing – written case studies and photography, organisational messaging and key stats, relevant price points. Including, but not limited to, taking photos, organising photo shoots, interviewing staff and clients to gain first-hand accounts, liaising with front line colleagues and finance colleagues.

The team

The Fundraising and Digital Directorate is responsible for all digital communications as well as securing income to support Refugee Council’s charitable objectives. This role sits within the Public Fundraising team. The Fundraising team’s work includes fundraising from a range of donors including individuals, trusts and foundations, statutory sources, corporates and major donors. This role, within the Public Fundraising Team secures donations from individuals signed up to our newsletters and individuals giving up to £5,000 per year, legators and regular givers.

Job Purpose

The Senior Programme Officer (SPO) will be responsible for delivering an FCDO-funded rule of law and access to justice programme, as part of a wider team. The SPO will manage a portfolio of projects within the Programme and will ensure effective project controls and processes are applied. The SPO will ensure programmes and projects are delivered and monitored in line with the organisation’s standards, industry code regulations/best practices and key project management controls and processes. The Director of Programmes will play a pivotal role in the strategic leadership and management of our Programmes Directorate. This is an exciting, new role that has been created to deliver a series of regional events aimed at bringing together and celebrating educators across the UK.  We are looking for an outstanding, innovative and dynamic event manager to help us shape these regional events, and take full responsibility for all aspects of event content, and organisational delivery, overseeing the coordination of key tasks and ensuring smooth execution with support from the wider team.

The role holder will collaborate closely with CEO to expand the impact and visibility of The Teaching Awards Trust, ensuring these events serve as a platform to celebrate and elevate the work of educators nationwide.

• Work with events sponsors and strengthen stakeholder partnerships to support the delivery and promotion of the events to ensure wide attendance, and in particular the development of relationships with regional partners and TAT alumni
• Collaborate with the Marketing team to promote the events
• Manage relationships with the PR agency and media partners to ensure strong media coverage
• Responsible for producing detailed event project plans to include timelines, risk management, guest management, venues, suppliers, staffing and budgets

ABOUT YOU

• A track record of 5-10 years in the successful delivery of events, with experience within the education/charity sector advantageous
• Knowledge of event management and marketing including an advanced understanding of the logistics of what makes an event successful 
• Stakeholder and supplier management experience
• You will have excellent project management, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
• You will possess excellent interpersonal and be adept at building relationships with stakeholders
• You will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to convey ideas succinctly and persuasively

You will bring strategic vision, expertise, and a collaborative approach to drive RLS’s future direction, strengthen anti-racist practices and accountability whilst empowering teams across Greece, the UK, and Northern France.

This role uniquely combines strategic oversight with hands-on work, bridging urgent client needs with long-term systemic change. For a leader passionate about migrant justice and equity, this is a career-defining opportunity to sustain and grow RLS’s mission while shaping its future.

Role Overview: 

The Executive Director is a new role for RLS. The successful candidate will lead RLS through its next phase of development, providing strategic leadership, promoting organisational cohesion and accountability whilst driving the fulfilment of our mission. As a representative and advocate for RLS, the Executive Director will oversee key areas such as organisational development, strategic planning, fundraising, robust financial planning, risk management, staff well-being, and external relations.

Core Responsibilities:

1. Organisational Development

   • Review and enhance RLS’s organisational structure and cohesiveness across offices and teams.

   • Implement strategic outcomes to ensure efficient and aligned operations.

2. Strategic Planning

   • Lead on developing and delivering strategic plans in alignment with RLS’s values and mission, incorporating regular reviews.

   • Ensure the sustainability of RLS’s mission and core programmes.

3. Lead the Management Team

   • Guide and support the Management Team, fostering effective collaboration.

   • Promote project integration, efficient delivery, and cross-team development.

   • Embed and promote robust accountability.

4. Governance

   • Work with and leverage the knowledge of the RLS’s Board of Trustees and thematic sub-committees to drive positive change and ensure sustainability.

5. Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management

   • Ensure RLS’s compliance with relevant regulations and effective risk management across operations in collaboration with managers. This includes SQM, OISC, LAA, employment law and regulations in foreign jurisdictions.

6. HR Oversight & Staff Development

   • Oversee HR functions, promote professional growth, and prioritise staff well-being.

7. Fundraising & Financial Oversight

   • Deliver robust financial planning and drive RLS’s fundraising efforts in collaboration with management team and trustees.

   • Engage with key funders and develop sustainable funding strategies.

8. External Representation & Advocacy

   • Serve as the public face of RLS, advocating for our mission through media, events, and partnerships. Where considered appropriate, the Executive Director will be deputised by members of staff or management in external communications.

   • Act as a key contact for the Board of Trustees, promoting transparent communication between staff, management and board.

9. Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL)

   • Own, review and implement appropriate MEL frameworks and practices. 

   • Implement progressive and compassionate accountability structures to ensure transparency across the organisation.

Person Specification

Essential:

• Proven leadership in an organisation focused on human rights, migration, or a related sector.

• Strong strategic planning and organisational development experience, ideally in a fast-growing setting.

• Experience of fundraising and financial management within the third sector.

• Experience leading remote, diverse teams and implementing inclusive HR practices.

• Deep understanding of the immigration and asylum landscape in the UK and Europe.

• Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to represent RLS effectively to partners and the public.
