What does a Trustee do! 

A Trustee’s role is to act in the best interests of the organization. They are accountable for the organization’s finances, legal affairs, overall performance, and serious arising issues. Trustees must ensure that executives align with the organization’s purpose and mission, acting in ways that advance these goals and uphold the organization’s values. Statutory duties include ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, safeguarding assets, and maintaining accurate financial records.

Commitment

Each Trustee will attend Trustee meetings on a regular basis, a Trustee may also be appointed as a Co Chair and into other roles such as Treasurer and Secretary, and also may join a committee.

CARA (Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse) works with victims and survivors of sexual violence and child sexual abuse, providing independent, specialist support and promoting and representing their rights and needs.

CARA works with adults, young people and children from across Mid and North Essex and Uttlesford. Over the last 10 years, CARA has grown significantly. Our client numbers have more than quadrupled and we have developed a wide range of services for victims and survivors of all ages and genders. We currently have a team of 36 full and part-time staff and over 20 sessional counsellors.

CARA is looking to recruit new trustees to our Board. As a CARA trustee, you will have the opportunity to be involved with a forward-thinking and fast-developing feminist charity. Our Board of trustees provide strategic direction and governance to CARA, overseeing our finances and management, working closely with the Senior Management Team. CARA’s Board of Trustees are also registered as our directors for the purposes of company law.

CARA has recently undertaken a Governance Review, and we are currently working to implement the recommendations from this review to ensure we are following best practice in charity governance.

Our existing Board members have a wide range of skills and expertise, but to ensure CARA’s effective governance we are particularly looking to recruit new trustees with the following skills and experiences:

• Law and legal compliance

• Experience as a CARA service-user

We would also be interested in hearing from people with skills and experience in the following areas:

• Best practice in charity governance

• Campaigning

• Experience in the Women’s Sector

Trustee Role Description

Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that CARA achieves its core purpose. They oversee our overall management and ensure that CARA has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision, culture and values.

Trustees are responsible for:

1. Supporting and providing advice on CARA’s mission, vision, goals and activities.

2. Approving CARA’s strategy and organisational policies.

3. Overseeing CARA’s financial plans and budgets.

4. Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.

5. Ensuring that key risks are identified, monitored and controlled effectively.

6. Reviewing and approving CARA’s financial statements.

7. Providing support and challenge to CARA’s CEO.

8. Keeping abreast of changes in CARA’s operating environment.

9. Contributing to regular reviews of CARA’s governance.

10. Scrutinising Board papers and attending Board meetings adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.

11.Using independent judgement to promote and protect CARA’s interests.

12.Contributing to the broader promotion of CARA’s aims and reputation by applying their skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.

Terms of appointment of trustees

• Trustees are appointed for a 3-year term of office, with potential for re-appointment for 2 further terms to a maximum of 9 years. Reappointment is subject to satisfactory performance and contribution.

• This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. Time commitment (Estimated at 0.5 day per month):

• Attending 6 Board meetings annually, including some face-to-face meetings. 100% attendance is expected, except in emergencies.

• Attending strategy days or other strategic sessions, as agreed.

• There will be times when trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance or presenting externally. All trustee appointments will be conditional on an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, and satisfactory references.

Carers UK is the national membership charity for the millions of people in the UK who are unpaid carers. As an organisation we provide expert advice and information for carers, campaign for greater recognition and support for carers, and use our experience and expertise to help other organisations do more for carers. Seeking Volunteer Trustees to join in the starting up of a Peace Charity in Manchester, UK.

- This is an unpaid volunteer Trustee position & does not pay expenses. The charity is only just starting, when the charity is more established we can consider paying expenses for volunteer roles, but currently at the present time the role is unpaid with no expenses. If the charity takes off, we can have a board meeting about paying volunteer expenses.

- We need a Board of Trustees before we can apply to the Charities Commission for England & Wales for registration, we intend to register as a Charity in 2025 after we have a solid and diverse Board of Trustees in place.

The founder will be Cindy Baxter, Trustees that join now will be considered co-founders as well as Trustees given they would help to set the Charity up from scratch.

Job Summary
The Trustee plays a pivotal role in the governance and strategic direction of the organisation. ABOUT THE PROPOSED CHARITY:

The International Society for the Promotion of Permanent & Universal Peace (International Peace Society - IPS for short) will be an inclusive and ethical Society created in the UK in Manchester, the 'City of Peace', to further Domestic & International Peace initiatives. Especially to in future, if the Society becomes successful & raises enough funds, employ professionals, in particular, of the Social Sciences - particularly those skilled in Peace & Conflicts, Social Work, Psychology, Community Development, Humanitarian efforts, Domestic & Family Abuse, International aid, International Diplomacy & many others. The Society, if successful, will have other jobs & volunteers also of all types of skills & abilities relevant to the Society's aims as well. The founder of this 2024 Society is Cindy Baxter, a Social Scientist & Registered Social Worker in England with 8 years experience in Safeguarding (Child Protection) across two countries (Australia & the UK), with studies in Psychology, Sociology, History & a Social Work Masters Degree that included a community development course. Cindy has an enormous amount of experience of doing paperwork for Government, experience of working with asylum seeking children, has experience of travelling to other countries & interacting with people from different cultures & Cindy is also a descendent of the Peace Family Line - her Great-Grandfather is Robert J C Peace who was born in Battersea in London in 1921. Cindy will go on to study a PhD in Social Sciences part-time whilst helping to run the Society alongside other founders & trustees. If the Society became successful, & enough funds were raised, an employment call would then go out to locate a suitable Peace President for the Society & other essential staff.

At the moment however the Society is at the very beginning stages where Trustees are needed to help start the Society, help with fundraising & apply to register the charity with the Companies House & the Charities Commission as a Charitable Not-For-Profit Company (Limited by Guarantee) in England in 2025.

There would be two main aspects to the Society:

- Domestic Peace & International Peace

CHARITABLE PURPOSES:

- The advancement of human rights, conflict resolution or reconciliation or the promotion of religious or racial harmony or equality and diversity

- The advancement of health or the saving of lives (saving lives by preventing wars, ending wars, de-escalating the negative impacts of wars & by domestic & family abuse assistance)

- The prevention or relief of poverty (where it relates to war or domestic/family abuse/exploitation)

- The advancement of education (Peace Education & Social Sciences)

- The advancement of the arts, culture, heritage or science (The advancement of Social Sciences specifically)

A brief overview - this is not an exhaustive list of everything the Society will aim to do but a general starting point:

The International section of the Society would likely involve forms of overseas aid, focus on diplomacy, encouraging Peace between Nations, spreading messages of peace & peaceful resolution of conflicts, attempts to avert war, especially nuclear war, employing independent Diplomats, etc. Attempting to encourage communities to unite in a spirit of peace, for example by hosting events for the public & the Society's members to attend, such a big peace walks or charity luncheons or charity galas etc. The Society will start in Manchester but if it becomes successful could branch out into other regions of the UK or even into other Countries. The Manchester office where it will start, may in future employ people or enlist volunteers who may work overseas at times as part of their role. The main reason would be to encourage as much as possible conflict/dispute resolution & encourage Nations and differing Nationalities to find diplomatic ways of resolving difficulties in an effort to end wars & prevent new wars/conflict from continuing to occur. Social Scientists, Social Policy graduates and other professionals may also be employed to uncover the deeper reasons behind what is causing specific conflicts/wars in particular regions of the world & give advice on how best to proceed to attempt to end the war/address the underlying problems that are leading to conflict/war.

- support offered to veterans & victims of conflicts/wars including those who are asylum seekers/refugees due to war

- Representing Peace in the North of England

- If the Peace & Justice Project based in London was willing to partner with the IPS we could work in tandem with them, they focus a lot on the Politics of Peace

In terms of Domestic Peace (within the UK) there will be a section of the Society that assists people & families having difficulties with domestic & family abuse or other family problems that are disturbing the peace (e.g. if the Society raised enough funds in future we could hire couple's therapists, domestic abuse specialists or partner with or support local agencies that already specialize in domestic & family abuse)

- support offered to survivors of abuse/neglect/trauma

Other potential aims:

Peace Education, Peace Awareness, Peace initiatives, Humanitarian efforts.

Further aims & purposes of the Society will be discussed in Trustee meetings, we are open to collaborating to discuss the overall aims & purposes of the Charity & how these can be brought into reality. Ultimately we want to have a Charity that helps a lot of people both within the UK & Internationally. This Society is only just starting right now, as such it is not yet registered. The purpose of this advertisement is to recruit Trustees to the Board of Trustees & be able to start the process of having the charity registered once we reach a fundraising goal of £5000.

What the IPS needs from you as a Trustee on the Board of Trustees:

- A commitment to act as a volunteer Trustee for the IPS for at least 1 year, however ideally for 3 years or longer

- Time commitment of at least 6 hours per month to join trustee meetings & discussions regarding the founding document & other various administration matters related to setting up a Charity. A virtual option will be provided for meetings for those that wish to work from home.

- Preferred location of Trustees - Greater Manchester - at least 3 of the Trustees need to be based in Greater Manchester or surrounding areas & be able to commute to Manchester Central easily.

However applications from regions outside of Greater Manchester & surrounds will be considered as long as the applicant will commit to either commuting into Greater Manchester for meetings, or commit to joining us virtually. Remote option is available.

You must live in the UK & be legally entitled to volunteer in the UK.

- Experience or vast knowledge of overseas aid, diplomacy and other peace initiatives and efforts (For the International Peace side of the IPS)

- Domestic & family abuse work experience & qualifications (for the Domestic Peace side of the IPS)

- Couples counselling work experience and/or social work dispute resolution & de-escalating conflicts work experience

An applicant who has experience of fundraising & of starting and/or managing a Charity will be highly favoured. Particularly an applicant with experience of International aid & Diplomacy.

The main criteria is a passion for the cause of peacemaking. If you are passionate about peacemaking and believe you could be a Trustee for the IPS please apply. For those who wish to be a general volunteer for the IPS, another call will go out next year for general volunteers after the Board of Trustees has agreed on the structure of the organisation and completed the founding document.

Please be aware that all applications which proceed onto potential recruitment to Trustee positions with the IPS will be required to undergo DBS checks before being allowed into any Trustee meetings.

Prospective trustees will be asked to sign a declaration to confirm that they are not disqualified from acting as a charity trustee if successful in the recruitment process.

The likely set up for the Charity will be a Not-For-Profit Charitable Company (limited by Guarantee), this will require registration with the Companies House & The Charities Commission for England & Wales once the charity is able to prove earnings of £5000 or more per year. Please keep this in mind. Trustees will have very limited liability, at maximum £10. Trustees are not expected to contribute money to set the charity up, you do not need to have money to be a Trustee, however having fundraising experience or an ability to talk to others in the general community about the importance of raising money for Peace Initiatives will be essential for at least some of the 11 Trustees that will be recruited. Or have the ability to manage future volunteers (not in Trustee positions, general volunteers) to help them learn or develop the skills to fundraise for the IPS.

Fundraising is an essential part of any Charity & we will need to demonstrate we can raise £5000 annually before we can register our Charity. Applications close on the 15th of January 2025. Interview times will be able to be flexible around the applicants with interviews occuring late January or early February 2025.

Safe Passage International is looking for people to join our Board of Trustees who are passionate about our mission to champion safe passage for people seeking asylum. 

We would particularly welcome applications from people who have lived (personal) experience of having to leave their home and cross borders in search of asylum and from people from Black, Asian, and other Minoritised Ethnic communities.

• UK and, international / EU law and public policies on the subject of asylum-seeking and immigration.

About Safe Passage International

Safe Passage International (SPI) is a charity that champions the rights of people seeking asylum and displaced people as they flee persecution. We use the law to help them access safe routes to a place of safety and we work alongside them to campaign for change and build public support for safe passage for all.

We have a particular focus on supporting unaccompanied children and young people to reunite with family and reach protection in Europe, although we also work with adults and family groups too.

We are based in the UK, with small offices also in France and Greece. These offices are locally registered not for profit companies who are part of Safe Passage International, overseen by the international UK Board of Trustees. 

Safe Passage International advances its mission through five main strands of work:

• providing legal advice to asylum-seekers and their family members to help them be safely and legally reunited;
• holding governments and decision-makers to account on their legal obligations to people seeking asylum;
• campaigning and advocacy with policy makers in Government, Parliament, and other authorities to provide safe and legal routes for people seeking asylum;
• helping young people seeking asylum to settle upon arrival and working with them to campaign on issues that they are passionate about;
• Improving public awareness of the need for safe routes.

About our Board of Trustees

Joining the Safe Passage International Board means playing a leading role in a charity that supports people seeking asylum to access safe routes and reunite with family. By contributing your skills and perspective, you have the opportunity to support them to find safety. 

SPI is run by a Board of Directors known as Trustees. The Trustees work on a voluntary basis to uphold the core purpose of the charity, set its strategy, and protect its reputation. They are also responsible for overseeing the charity’s finances and ensuring that the charity’s activities fulfil its aims and are in line with charitable rules and regulations.

SPI’s existing Board currently has ten Trustees who between them have expertise by experience and / or knowledge and experience in the areas of safeguarding and casework, campaigning and advocacy, EU policies and law, finance, HR, leadership development, public policy, and governance.

It is very important that the Board’s decision-making is informed by the perspectives of people seeking asylum. We value the powerful insight that lived experience brings to the Board. We also respect that people’s identity is not defined by their past experiences and do not expect candidates to describe their lived experience during the interview process unless they wish to.

What is a Trustee at Safe Passage International expected to do?

The overriding duty of all charity trustees is to advance the purposes of their charity as well as several basic legal duties. You can find out more about Trustees’ legal responsibilities here.

As a new Trustee, you will be a full and equal Board member. The Board of Trustees works closely with the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team of Safe Passage International to achieve its mission, and is responsible for providing support, guidance, and decisions in the following areas:

• Leadership: appointing the Chief Executive, supporting them in their role and holding them accountable.
• Accountability: ensuring that Safe Passage International is transparent and accountable to the public, our beneficiaries, and our donors about the way we carry out our mission and the way we spend the funds our supporters entrust to us.
• Strategic thinking: helping the charity to set goals and objectives, and work towards achieving them.
• Financial Oversight: including a formal review of the charity’s annual budget and supporting the Senior Leadership Team in financial management and organisation.
• Fundraising: including helping the charity to gain access to potential donors and supporters and providing general advice on areas of fundraising.
• Guidance and Support: including advising, where appropriate, the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team in areas such as employee management, strategic choices, and legal requirements.

Time Commitment and Expectations: If selected to join Safe Passage Internationals Board of Trustees, you will be expected to:

• Attend a range of training sessions prior to your first board meeting
• Attend 4 Board Meetings per year, plus one Strategy Day (in person where possible, otherwise   electronically).
• Read required Board documents before each meeting and be ready to ask questions and actively contribute to the Board’s discussion
• If requested, ad-hoc meetings on particular subjects
• Join a sub-committee to contribute to a specific area
• Attend occasional meetings with members of the public, for example with Safe Passage International’s supporters, or with politicians and policymakers
• Be an ambassador for the charity and for young people seeking asylum
• Collaborate and work with Safe Passage International’s staff as required. The successful appointee will be required to apply for an enhanced DBS or criminal record check, but a criminal record is not necessarily a barrier to being appointed to this role.

Safe Passage International’s Board members are appointed for a term of three years, which can be renewed. Throughout your time as a Trustee, we are committed to supporting your growth and offer access to relevant courses and development opportunities to help you build your skills and maximise your impact

Like all other charities, Safe Passage International’s Board members are volunteers. The role is therefore unpaid. However, SPI will pay for your travel to meetings and other necessary expenses.

We're dedicated to creating a kinder society where animals are protected from persecution in the name of sport. We've been at the forefront of change, instrumental in landmark legislation like the Hunting Act 2004. Through our wildlife reserves, investigations and advocacy, we're driving tangible change and standing up for those who can't speak for themselves. The League operates in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, striving to protect animals from the horrific acts of hunting, shooting and animal fighting.

Your role:

As a trustee, you'll have a shared responsibility with 6-10 fellow board members to play a pivotal role in shaping our strategic direction, ensuring compliance and supporting our CEO. You'll lead policy, monitor financial stability, identify and manage risks, and as a League ambassador you’ll champion our cause.

As a trustee you will attend eight board meetings per year (seven virtually) and the AGM.  In line with the Charity Commission regulations, no payment will be made for this role, but all expenses will be reimbursed.

To be a Trustee of an organisation is an exciting and fulfilling role and the most effective Boards are ones which benefit from individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds, experiences and skill sets.

The role of a Trustee is to ensure that GFS fulfils its duty to its beneficiaries and delivers on our vision, mission and values.

Key Responsibilities
The statutory duties of a trustee are:
• To ensure the organisation complies with its governing document (articles of association).
• To ensure that the organisation pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document.
• To ensure the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives - the charity must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objectives.
• To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
• To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation.
• To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
• To ensure the financial stability of the organisation.
• To protect and ensure the proper investment of the organisation’s funds.
• To appoint the Chief Executive and monitor their performance.
• In addition, with other trustees, to hold the charity “in trust” for current and future beneficiaries by:

The Board of Trustees are jointly and severally responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, its financial health, the impact of its activities and developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines.

Beyond the statutory duties of GFS, we ask that our trustees take a supporting role within the organisation to help drive the delivery of the strategy and support the team. This could include activities such as chairing committees/working groups, mentoring members of the team or actively supporting meetings with potential funders for example.

At Tir Natur we are passionate about our vision of Cymru, where wild nature and communities thrive and ecosystems are restored. We want to buy land to create Wales' largest rewilding project.  This will help meet our aims to advance the improvement and conservation of the physical and natural environment.  Rewilding will restore the natural processes that create resilient ecosystems and enhance biodiversity and bio-abundance.

Tir Natur (Nature’s Land) was established in June 2022 in response to the escalating nature and climate emergencies that we are facing, including loss of biodiversity and extreme weather events. According to the State of Nature Report 2023, 1 in 6 species is now at risk of extinction in Wales with 2% of the 3900 species assessed already lost. Since 1994, Wales has seen a 20% average drop in species abundance, a shocking trend that must be reversed.  The report calls for ‘a rapid increase in rates of both ecosystem restoration and targeted species recovery action’ while acknowledging that the scale of current activity will likely see Wales fall far short. 

We came together to take action as the scale of ambition to implement recovery and climate mitigation work in Wales are not sufficient. Tir Natur will purchase of a large area of land in Cymru to demonstrate the processes involved in large-scale ecosystem restoration.  We will support nature to enhance resilience, enabling it to adapt to current and future challenges including climate change.

We will showcase the cascading benefits of putting nature first, from re-animating natural carbon cycles, to holding water back on the land, protecting communities and farmland downstream, and improving the physical and mental health of society through reconnecting people with wild nature.

We are a growing charity, and we are capturing the imagination of people from a wide range of backgrounds, as can be seen from the runaway success of our recent crowdfunder.  We are united by a conviction that proposed actions are inadequate, that we need to act now, and that Nature cannot wait.

Overview 

Thank you so much for your interest in this important role. WaterHarvest has a small UK team of three part-time home-based staff – CEO, Operations Manager and Fundraising Manager (we will be recruiting for a second fundraising role shortly). In Uganda we employ a local engineer to support delivery of our programme, liaising with our local partner (MADLACC) and a regional building contractor team.

Our new CEO joined in March 2024 and has led the development of a new three-year strategy approved by the Board focusing on the expansion of our existing programmes in Africa.

Our current Chair, Neil Mehta is stepping down after nine years of wonderful service. Neil has overseen a long term pivot of our focus to delivering water harvesting programmes in Africa. We are focused on growing in an ambitious, yet sustainable manner, as climate change brings a renewed focus on the need for sustainable solutions for clean water.

We are looking for an experienced Trustee who can appreciate our significant legacy but help us move forward to support delivery of our new strategy. Ideally, we are seeking someone living in/near London to meet with our CEO and funders.

Remit & time commitment

• The Chair is responsible for holding the Board and CEO to account for the charity’s mission and vision, providing inclusive leadership to the Board, ensuring each Trustee fulfils their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity. 
• Legally, all members of the Board share collective responsibility for providing oversight, governance and leadership. In addition to the standard Trustee remit, the Chair has a specific role with principal responsibilities outlined on the next page.
• The Board meets formally via Zoom for half a day (usually on a Tuesday  morning), four times per year. Additional informal calls/meetings are held with Trustees on an ad-hoc as needed basis.
• The Chair and CEO hold a fortnightly Zoom catch-up call and aim to meet face to face on a quarterly basis.

Chair Responsibilities

Board leadership

• Provide leadership to the WaterHarvest Board to operate within its charitable objectives and fulfil its legal duties and governance responsibilities. Facilitate the Board’s regular review of major risks and associated opportunities, managing and mitigating the risks.
• Closely monitor the financial health of WaterHarvest.
• Inspire & motivate other Board members and lead on the induction of new Trustees ensuring external Trustee training is provided as needed.

Governance

• To guide Board actions concerning organisational priorities and governance concerns and help the Board reach sound decisions.
• Ensure that all governance arrangements are compliant with Charity Commission regulations.
• In consultation with other Trustees, lead the appointment of new Board members to fill identified skills gaps and monitor the effectiveness of all Board members. 
• Sign on behalf of the Board, the Annual Report and Financial Statements and other financial and legal documentation, in accordance with Board resolutions.
• Visit our overseas programmes in Uganda and Ghana on annual/biannual basis to meet with our local delivery partners and to review impact.

External Relations

• Act as an ambassador/spokesperson for WaterHarvest alongside the CEO when appropriate, representing the charity at external functions, meetings and events.
• Safeguard the good name and reputation of WaterHarvest.

Efficiency and effectiveness

• Chair meetings of the Board of Trustees effectively and efficiently, bringing impartiality and objectivity to the decision-making process.
• Lead the Trustees to be fully engaged so that decisions are taken in the best, long-term interests of the charity and that the Board takes collective ownership of these decisions.
• With the CEO, agree the agenda ahead of Board meetings & approve draft minutes prior to circulation to the full Board. Take the lead on ensuring decisions taken at Board meetings are implemented.

Relationship with the CEO and team 

• Act as a critical friend to the CEO, providing support when needed to deliver WaterHarvest’s new strategy.
• Ensure regular contact with the CEO and develop/maintain an open and supportive relationship within which each can speak openly about concerns, worries and challenges.

Conduct regular meetings (in person or by Zoom etc) and an annual appraisal for the CEO in consultation with other Trustees.

About you

Experience

Essential:

• Experience of operating at a senior strategic leadership level within an organisation, including significant line management experience.
• Long term experience of being a Charity Trustee.
• Experience of external representation, delivering presentations and managing stakeholders.
• Significant experience of chairing formal meetings.
• Excellent relationship skills, even in a virtual environment.

Desirable:

• Strong budgetary/financial skills.
• Direct experience of raising income within a charity setting.
• Experience of working directly for a charity.
• Experience of delivering programmes/working with colleagues in Africa.

Knowledge
