About Access Academia

Access Academia is the charitable umbrella which was created out of the creation of the student-led publication, the Journal of Intersectional Social Justice. When Journal of Intersectional Social Justice (JISJ) was created, there were not any expectations for the project to be any more than that: a student-led academic publication. However, as it rolled on, attention for the project widened and it began to cover other topics and get involved in other realms of knowledge sharing, activism, and content creation. The creation of the seminal Access Series on the Intersections blog springboarded the idea for the JISJ to turn into something much more than a simple academic publication. Now as we have restructured the JISJ into Access Academia, we are finalising our official registration as a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) in the UK. 

Our core purpose is to Make Academia More Accessible. We plan to accomplish this by many different avenues, as obviously it is a very wide-ranging goal! The main ways we plan to do this are through encouraging Open Access academia and knowledge sharing through the Access Series, expanding the themes covered on Intersections with additions such as Mental Health Mondays and Colonialism in Subject, creating accessible content across our social media platforms which encourages truthful and accurate knowledge sharing and activism, running research events to encourage students to publish and interact with academia, covering inside stories of academia, running student engagement programmes to try and make academia less of an Ivory Tower, and much more!

What is a Volunteership?

A volunteership is a unique hybrid opportunity that combines elements of volunteering and interning. Participants commit to working with a charity or nonprofit organization for a specified period of time, fulfilling a set of responsibilities and expectations. In return, they gain valuable experience, receive a letter of recommendation, and are offered LinkedIn endorsements. Additionally, they may have the chance to continue working with the charity through future hiring cycles as long as they remain a student. This experience provides both personal fulfillment through giving back to the community and professional development for future career opportunities.

Volunteership: Outreach Coordinator
Duration: May to August 2025
Eligibility: Must be currently enrolled as a student

Requirements:

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate program.

• Strong interest in community engagement and networking.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to craft compelling emails and messages tailored to different audiences.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Email Outreach:

  • Meet a monthly email outreach quota, targeting potential partners and other key stakeholders.

  • Craft personalized and engaging outreach emails to build and maintain relationships with various groups.

  • Follow up with contacts to nurture relationships and drive engagement with the charity's initiatives.

• Community Engagement:

  • Assist in developing and implementing outreach strategies to expand the charity’s network and reach.

  • Help coordinate outreach efforts for specific campaigns, events, or initiatives.

  • Track responses and report on outreach success rates, identifying areas for improvement.

• Research & Networking:

  • Conduct research to identify new potential partners, supporters, or collaborators for the charity.

  • Assist with compiling contact lists and gathering relevant information for outreach purposes.

• Campaign Support:

  • Support the development of email campaigns, including drafting email copy and ensuring timely distribution.

  • Help maintain and update the charity's contact database, ensuring accuracy and compliance with privacy standards.

• Post-Event & Programme Reporting:

  • Help in post-event evaluations, collecting feedback from participants, and reporting on outcomes.

  • Assist in maintaining and updating event and programme documentation for future reference.

• Collaboration & Teamwork:

  • Collaborate with internal teams and volunteers to ensure Access Academia's message is shared correctly and consistently.

  • Contribute and attend all meetings for the Outreach & Marketing team and directions from the Director of Outreach & Marketing.

The Student Publication Association (SPA) is recruiting charity trustees to assist its work in advancing the education of student journalists across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

As a small, student-led charity, we support more than 330 member publications around the UK and Republic of Ireland, offering advice, training, and recognition at both our regional and national awards.

Our trustee board plays a vital role in our governance, ensuring that we remain within the boundaries of charity law, protecting the charity’s long-term stability, and supporting our student executives.

For this round of applications, we are particularly keen to hear from applicants with expertise relevant to the journalism industry.

No previous experience in journalism or as a charity trustee is required — but we do ask that you share our commitment to the advancement of student journalism.

About The Role

As a small volunteer-run charity, we anticipate the role would take up an average of 1-2 hours a week, although this may increase during busier periods for the SPA, such as around our annual national conference (SPANC).

As a trustee, you will be a collaborative and supportive team player who will:

• Attend monthly oversight meetings with the executive committee and other trustees;
• Attend other meetings and 1-2-1s as needed on an ad hoc basis;
• Offer guidance and support to the executive committee throughout the year to help them achieve their goals, particularly in your area of expertise;
• Ensure that the charity is carrying out its core purpose, that resources are managed responsibly, and that activities comply with our governing documents;
• Support the delivery of our national conference, including attendance at the weekend itself during the Easter university holidays;
• Where possible, attend our induction day, for new executive members each year.

This is a volunteer role, but all reasonable expenses will be covered. The term for these appointments will be three years.

You will be responsible for planning and hosting episodes for the podcast alongside the team. You will be responsible for bringing these plans to life once the camera starts rolling, creating an engaging, welcoming and student-friendly atmosphere through your questions, style and rapport with guests.

Key tasks

• Content creation: Create a podcast plan and structure for each podcast with Podcast Lead. Creating contingency plans if things don’t go to plan (e.g. guest cancels).

• Hosting duties: Introduce the episode and guest, guide the flow of the conversation, time manage the podcast itself so each one is of an appropriate length, intermittently summarise the key points of the guest for the viewers.

• Guest relations: Create a comfortable environment for the guest and make them feel at ease before the podcast starts. Includes pre-filming communications and preparation.

Our Fundraising Events Team are at the heart of what we do, raising essential funds for the cats. 

Our Fundraising Events Organisers share ideas, tasks and inspiration, planning and delivering local events, with the support of the Fundraising events helpers, such as Open Days (usually 2 per year) at the centre and our annual Christmas Bazaar. 

Time Expectation:  This role can be varied and time commitment can be flexible. 

Without volunteers, Cats Protection Berkshire Cat Centre simply wouldn't exist. Our amazing, friendly volunteers are a diverse group with a shared love of cats who fit volunteering around their home lives and personal commitments.

We're often looking to welcome new volunteers to join our brilliant team. As well as meeting great people and making an incredible difference to the cats of Berkshire.

About the Alec Dickson Trust

Alec Dickson together with his wife Moira, founded Voluntary Service overseas (VSO) and later Community Service Volunteer (CSV) as they passionately believed that anyone – whatever their background – could make a positive contribution to the world around them. Alec pioneered the involvement of young volunteers with backgrounds in offending, drug misuse and homelessness, built up a programme of community service work in schools, and campaigned vigorously for a nationwide community service. It was with this spirit of adventure and belief in young people that the Alec Dickson Trust was established after Alec’s death in 1994. Since then, the Trust has continued his legacy by awarding grants to young people with innovative community projects promoting volunteering up to the value of £500. 

Joining the Alec Dickson Trust

We are looking to recruit 2-4 trustees with a diverse set of skills and experiences. 

We welcome applications from disadvantaged/underrepresented groups and backgrounds outside of the charity sector. We are particularly interested to hear from first-time trustees and applicants with skills in fundraising and communications. 

There will be some flexibility in the exact nature of each trustee role, but we currently expect vacancies in the following areas: Fundraising and Communications – please let us know in your application if you want to apply for a specific role.

The Fundraising role will include developing and implementing the fundraising strategy, focusing on engaging and securing donations from public and private charitable bodies. The communications role will include developing and agreeing a social media strategy, creating content to promote the trust and extend our outreach and modernising our website.

Person Specification

Essential:

• A clear passion for volunteering to help make a difference to young people and communities across the UK.

• A willingness to review and challenge funding applications to ensure money is spent effectively.

• Preparedness to contribute to discussions and make difficult decisions

• A willingness to participate in committees in order to continually improve the Trust and grant-management process.

• Applicants can be from any background, with any qualifications or work experience, though we particularly welcome applications from individuals who have not previously been trustees.

Desirable:

• Experience in fundraising and/ or communications.

• Effective communication and team working skills.

• Problem solving and adaptability.

Commitment

• Trustees attend approximately eight board meetings per year, typically held via Google meet.

• They are also expected to contribute two hours per week to support the Trust’s work.

• Trustees are expected to make a minimum commitment of 2 years in post.

Interviews

Interviews will be held virtually in the week commencing Monday 19th May in the evenings. They will be around 30 minutes long and will be a chance for you to meet members of the Board of Trustees and talk to us about your interest in this role in more detail.

The HMSA is a small and dynamic charity that helps those living with hypermobility syndromes (and carers and families) to be independent and live well. We also provide education for professionals in social care, health, teaching and local authority employees. We have big plans to expand our offer to our members and professionals, as well as raise the profile of the charity and hypermobility syndromes.  We are seeking to appoint up to 2 new trustees.  Recognising that most people with these conditions present and are supported in primary care, we are particularly keen to recruit someone with a background in Primary Care to help us develop our plans. We are also interested to hear from anyone with experience of strengthening social media channels and comms, especially within a small charity setting.

 The Trustee role involves:

•  Preparing for and attending quarterly board meetings – 2 hours in the evening or a half day on a Saturday (half online/half in person if possible). The in person meetings are likely to be in central London.
• Providing support/guidance to the other Trustees, the CEO as well as staff/volunteer team. This may include small group working in between Board meetings.
• You may also be asked to participate in sub-committees as required.
• Developing and supporting our Clinical Advisory Group and/or Comms work
• Promoting the HMSA to primary care and other health and social care professionals or other relevant external audiences.

​In addition, there may-be other events such as volunteer/staff/member meetings or conferences that would be useful to have Trustee support

Our Challenge 

Our Support and Information team offer a wide range of inclusive and accessible peer support services, for everyone affected by a brain tumour — adults and children, regardless of whether it’s low or high grade. One of our most popular services is our Online Support Groups which offer peer to peer support on Facebook, HealthUnlocked and Instagram.

We are looking for volunteers who can manage requests to join our Facebook Support Groups and respond to posts with supportive comments and signposting. This role will continue to facilitate the warm and inclusive nature of the support groups by ensuring members are welcomed to the group and posts across our online support groups are responded to by The Charity, where appropriate.

How can you help?

In this role, you’d be required to get involved in the following:

• Managing Facebook requests
• Creating and maintaining accurate information on our CRM database
• Welcoming new members to the groups
• Offering peer support by responding to posts
• Flagging posts or comments to the group admin if you have any concerns
• Support with additional online tasks that help to deliver The Charity’s Support services

What impact will you have?

We have over 35,000 members of our online support groups and you will play a key role in providing vital support and information signposting to help those affected by a brain tumour diagnosis. 

We’re looking for…

Someone who is empathetic and supportive in nature and has:

• Experience of using social media platforms, in particular Facebook
• Strong IT and computer skills, ideally experience of using databases
• A high degree of empathy and resilience and an ability to separate own experiences from others, offering support and signposting in a non judgemental way
• Organisation and reliability, with an ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
• Great written communication skills and a demonstrable understanding of confidential working

Time commitment

We ask volunteers for a regular commitment of at least two hours a week (between 9am—5pm, Mon—Fri), with the opportunity to offer more time if you would like to. Due to the training involved, we would ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of 6 months volunteering with us.

Practical considerations

This is remote role where you can volunteer from home. You will receive a full induction to The Brain Tumour Charity and any specific training for the role, as well as ongoing direction and support from one of the team, who will be your key contact. We carry out reference checks for all individuals who will be volunteering with us on a regular basis. Volunteers will be required to complete some internal data protection and disclosure documentation before commencing the role. Volunteers must be over 18. We encourage volunteers to claim for any reasonable expenses that are incurred in the course of their volunteering with the Charity.
