About the Panel
No child should ever suffer harm, abuse or neglect, and reducing this is the primary focus of the independent Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel.
Set up by the UK Government in 2018, the Panel reviews all cases when children die or are seriously harmed, and abuse or neglect is known or suspected. The aim is to see what lessons can be drawn from these tragic incidents to prevent them from happening again elsewhere.
About the role
The independent Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel is looking for a part-time chair.
The Chair is responsible for leading and managing the Panel. They must set the strategic vision for the Panel and ensure the Panel’s work is effective in improving the safeguarding of children. It is also vital they influence policy and practice change effectively to maximise the Panel’s impact on child safeguarding.
It is a varied role, which includes working with Ministers and senior government officials, supervising fieldwork, undertaking analysis and disseminating learning to those working in child safeguarding.
We are looking for individuals with experience working strategically at a senior level and operationally in child protection. However, the successful candidate will be appointed to fill this role as an individual acting in the public interest and not as a representative of their particular profession, employer or interest group.
The Chair will be required to attend fortnightly Panel meetings, either virtually or in-person in London. They must also be available to attend ad hoc meetings with key stakeholders, as well as working with a Secretariat.
Key Responsibilities:
- To provide strategic leadership for the Panel, leading the development and implementation of a strategic vision for the Panel, ensuring a focus on Panel’s impact.
- To be ultimately responsible and accountable for the Panel’s work and conduct of its functions. This includes taking urgent decisions on behalf of the whole Panel when required.
- To lead continuous improvement reviews of Panel work and membership to ensure its ongoing effectiveness. This includes leading long-term planning for Panel membership.
- To ensure the Panel demonstrates the highest standards of integrity at all times, including ensuring the identification and management of any conflicts of interest which might arise.
- Chairing Panel meetings effectively so that objectives are met, ensuring that all members views are taken into account. This includes creating a culture of openness, debate and collaboration that maximises use of all members skills and experience.
- To represent the Panel to the public, media, and children’s social care and safeguarding sector.
- To build and maintain positive relationships with Multi-Agency Safeguarding Partners at both national and local level.
Essential Criteria
- The ability to provide strong strategic leadership to the Panel and guide the work of the independent secretariat, demonstrated by a significant record of achievement in senior leadership roles in a complex organisation.
- The ability to chair high level meetings, manage team dynamics and motivate team members effectively so that objectives are met and clear decisions made.
- The ability to think strategically and exercise sound independent judgement on complex and sensitive issues.
- The ability to analyse and interpret detailed information from a range of agencies into serious cases involving children and families.
- Being a skilled communicator and influencer, who can use those skills to handle high-profile, sensitive issues and gain and keep the respect and confidence of others, including the child safeguarding sector, Ministers, and the public, to influence policy and practice change.
- A strong understanding of multi-agency safeguarding arrangements.

Location: This is a remote role, with a requirement to attend the UK Covid 19 Inquiry as frequently as possible when it is sitting, and on key days such as the opening of Modules or when high profile witnesses are called.

Press Officer Responsibilities:
• Manage our press officer so that we are able to respond to press inquiries in a timely and effective manner. We are lucky enough to manage a very busy press office, so strong organisational skills are required.
• Create press plans and proactively pitch stories which help achieve our wider campaign goals. This will involve creating press strategies with creative flare and the Press Officer will need to be comfortable thinking of new angles and stunts to raise our profile.

• Oversee and generate fresh content for our social media channels, working alongside volunteers from the campaign

Essential Experience:
• Experience of working within a busy press office environment, PR agency or as a journalist
• Proven experience of creating and implementing effective media strategies which help advance wider organisational aims and goals.

• Proven experience of managing and maintaining good relationships with a variety of journalists, including national print and broadcast media, as well as political and health correspondents.

• Excellent writing skills that can be tailored to reach a range of audiences.

As a support line Call Handler, you will be a key member of our dedicated team, providing emotional support and a safe environment for callers with a wide range of complex issues.
NAPAC offers full training and hands-on support for call handlers with every call they receive. You will use the knowledge and skills you’ve developed through our training to explore issues relating to childhood abuse and it how it effects adulthood and signpost callers to relevant resources and services that can provide more in-depth support. Calls are caller-led, and you will be there to empower each caller to take back control in their lives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Follow confidentiality and safeguarding policies
- Provide appropriate signposting to external services in accordance to callers identified needs.
- Ensuring that key record keeping is maintained to the required standard and contributing to service monitoring requirements
- You will have the emotional resilience to be able to support individuals who may be severely distressed, experienced trauma, and people who may be at risk of harm.
- The ability to think on your feet to support callers who may call during panic attacks or flashbacks

- Create and update donor records on CRM, ensuring records are kept up to date, accurate and consistent at all times.

We are looking for an Economic Empowerment expert to lead on and ensure that Sightsavers' work in this area is strategically driven, technically-sound, at appropriate scale, and effectively implemented. The role will also provide strategic direction and oversee technical support to country-specific programmes and ensure that the overall portfolio of programmes is aligned with the organisational strategies. Key duties will include
- leading on the operationalization of the Economic Empowerment work as defined within our social inclusion strategy
- providing leadership across the organisation to ensure programme teams are working towards common objectives
- to lead the Economic Empowerment team providing oversight of the technical leadership and expertise in this area to guide the development and delivery of effective programmes
- to strengthen collaboration across the organisation through working closely with thematic experts in other teams
- to lead in the identification of new strategic initiatives and innovative approaches in Economic Empowerment
- to undertake senior level representation of Sightsavers as a thematic/technical expert with external stakeholders, including with key partners and global networks
- to manage administrative, budgetary, compliance and reporting requirements

To succeed in this role you will need:
- Extensive experience in a relevant field, e.g., international development, business administration, international public policy or economics.
- Significant experience in economic empowerment/ livelihoods in the government, non-governmental or private sector organisations
- Experience of working with the private sector and in building innovative, impactful public-private partnerships
- Significant experience leading and developing programmes in Economic Empowerment.
- Experience in programme management and programme innovation
- Understanding of theories and practice of management in organisations
- Significant experience in managing diverse teams
- Experience of working in partnership with diverse organisations and partners including government ministries, professional bodies, the private sector, civil society organisations and bilateral and multilateral development organisations.
- Proven experience in understanding and responding to the complexities of working across multiple countries and continents in an international development organisation.
- Experience in developing and disseminating good practice guidance
- Excellent communication and influencing skills
- The ability to travel internationally for at least 12 weeks per year
- The ability to communicate in French and/ or Portuguese would be desirable
- An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity for people with disabilities

About You

- preparing a range of learning and development activities, events and initiatives and delivering these both online and on site;
- working collaboratively with colleagues to plan, develop and review learning and development programmes;
- facilitating effective and potentially transformational conversations on a variety of subjects;
- contributing your individual gifts and experiences to enhance learning and development across the Connexion;
- supporting circuits within the district in exploring vision and developing mission plans;
- helping churches in the commitment to being inclusive, evangelistic and justice-seeking;
- a requirement to travel, and work during some weekends and evenings.
