Shop Assistant Volunteer Roles

We are looking to recruit a volunteer to support our retail team in our museum shop. This will be a fantastic opportunity to develop new skills, to become a part of our friendly team and to support us during a busy season.

Volunteer responsibilities:

· Provide a warm welcome to visitors

· Assist staff with selling items in our museum gift shop

· Proactively engage with visitors about the museum, exhibition, and services

· Ensure the shop is well-displayed, clean and tidy

What skills, qualities and experience do I need?

· You have an interest in Sigmund Freud/psychoanalysis or an interest to learn about these topics and confidently speak to visitors about them.

· You are welcoming and approachable.

· You have good numeracy skills and an eye for detail.

 What will the Museum expect from me?

·   We are seeking volunteers to support us one day a week, on Fridays or Sundays, from 12–4 pm, ideally on a regular weekly rota.

What will I get out of this opportunity?

· An excellent insight into the day-to-day running of a small museum, particularly related to retail.

·Reimbursement of travel expenses within London is provided.

· Museum events and conferences free of charge, with reduced rates for courses.

· Ability to visit the Museum free of charge with up to 2 guests.

· A written reference from Museum staff upon request.

What support and training will I receive?

· All volunteers will receive an induction before they start with us.

· Staff will always be available to support you during your volunteer sessions.

· We hold dedicated training to support you with carrying out your voluntary role.

Facilities

At the Freud Museum, there is space to leave your belongings while you volunteer and a well-equipped kitchen for breaks. The Museum is a grade II listed 20th century building with no lift. There is access to Wi-Fi throughout the Museum.

Volunteering for Sense

Our amazing team of volunteers help us run over 100 shops across England and Wales.  Every donated item that you sort, prepare and sell helps to raise vital funds to support us in our mission to make sure no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, is isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our shops are at the heart of local communities – sharing the work of Sense, and helping to secure support for our life changing work.

What your role will involve

There are a variety of tasks that you can get involved with in the shop, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience
• Receiving donated goods from members of the public
• Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
• Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised
• Processing sales and serving on the till
• Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives
• Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community
• Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
• Following new health and safety measures to ensure the safety of everyone
