Details of the role

As Jangala enters a critical phase of growth, we are scaling up our operations to meet our ambitious target of connecting four million people by 2030. The Head of Fundraising will play a crucial role in driving this expansion by developing and implementing strategic fundraising initiatives, expanding our network of supporters, and ensuring the sustainability of our programs. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of a pioneering organisation at the forefront of humanitarian technology.

We are looking for a strategic and collaborative leader with a proven track record in fundraising who can inspire and lead a team and is passionate about using technology for social good.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising strategy aligned with Jangala's mission and growth objectives.

• Identifying and securing new funding opportunities across various channels, including corporate partnerships, grants, philanthropy and individual giving.

• Leading, mentoring, and managing the fundraising team, setting clear objectives and ensuring their professional growth.

• Building and maintaining strong relationships with existing and potential funders, leveraging networks and partnerships to expand Jangala's reach.

• Monitoring and reporting on fundraising performance, adapting strategies to meet or exceed fundraising targets.

Core Requirements:

• Proven experience in fundraising, with a track record of achieving with a track record of achieving six figure grants or contracts.

• Experience working with corporate funders.

• Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic fundraising plans.

• Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities, capable of engaging a wide range of stakeholders and able to stay abreast of sector trends and enhance Jangala's visibility and influence in the UK and internationally.

Desirable Requirements:

• Experience in one or more of the technology, humanitarian, UK charities or international development sectors.

• Existing network of contacts in relevant areas eg. corporate funders interested in tech 4 good, UK based trust and foundations, global humanitarian funders, and government contacts interested in humanitarian technologies.

• Proven ability to secure multi-year funding commitments.

• Familiarity with open-source technology and its impact on social good.

• Strong strategic vision with the ability to adapt and respond to changing circumstances.

• Experience working closely with senior leadership and leveraging organisational strengths.

• Experience with multi-channel fundraising, including corporate partnerships, grants, and individual giving.

Important details

Jangala’s office is based in London and operates a remote-first working policy. Travel to our London office will be required for mind-mapping and collaborative work at least once a week.

Main responsibilities:

1. Manage, lead, support and develop our support and development (S&D) team, ensuring effective delivery and performance against our aims, objectives and plans, and ensuring the team’s work is well-planned, coordinated, evidenced and reported;
2. Lead on the development, delivery and regular review of a strategy and annual plans, targets and budgets for the S&D team, engaging the team and our funders effectively in this process, drawing on member, partner and Board input, and aligning with our overarching strategy;
3. Nurture a member-orientated, empowering, positive approach in the S&D team, in line with our values, ensuring high-quality provision of support, advice and signposting, balancing proactiveness and responsiveness, and being attentive to members’ needs and input, as well as wider contexts and opportunities;
4. Help our team to show positive leadership and provide intelligent, effective support, training and development services to our members around community engagement and empowerment, social inclusion and diversity, sustainable and healthy travel and socio-economic development – including by listening to members, continually developing the team’s knowledge, skills and networks, and enabling the team to signpost, refer to and collaborate with organisations with useful expertise/services;
5. Coordinating with our other teams, forge and maintain strong external partnerships, especially leading on those that help us support our members better and bring them opportunities, such as with train operators, corporate partners, third sector organisations, and at operational level with devolved/regional/combined authorities;
6. Continually monitor and develop the S&D team’s performance and impact, including using member, partner and colleague feedback, supporting staff to consider and maximise effectiveness, driving innovation and efficiencies, and developing ways to assess and evidence our impact, especially as our membership continues to grow;
7. Manage our activity supporting the creation and development of new or emerging community rail partnerships, station groups and community stations, and our support for those undergoing major change or challenges, ensuring this is carefully balanced with existing members’ needs;
8. Ensure our members’ voices, experiences and insights can be effectively used by our other teams and external partners, in their delivery, planning and strategic influencing work, especially ensuring that case studies, stories, examples and views are fed through to our communications, policy and events activity;
9. Play a key role in our liaison with and reporting to our own funders, and other major funders of our members, including ensuring effective monitoring and evaluation of our S&D work, collating good evidence of our own and our members’ impact, and maintaining a robust awareness of and ability to advocate on opportunities and risks in community rail;
10. As a member of our senior leadership team, work closely with senior colleagues and across the organisation, and liaise with our Board as relevant, to co-ordinate and manage the delivery of our overarching strategy, reinforce our values, ensure the whole team is engaged with our mission and purpose, and to show external leadership across our members, partners and beyond.

Skills and competencies:

1. Strong leadership and management skills, including a track record in managing, developing, drawing on and getting the best from a multi-faceted team, and working in and driving positive change in a complex, rapidly-evolving environment;
2. Significant experience and demonstrable experience in community engagement and community-led projects, ideally from both professional and voluntary positions, and ideally experience in supporting and advising community initiatives;
3. Experience in successfully planning, developing, delivering and evaluating programmes with positive social outcomes, including reporting to funders;
4. Experience working collaboratively and forming mutually-beneficial partnerships and professional networks, ideally with experience of developing corporate partnerships and/or funder relationships;
5. An understanding of how to evidence and increase social impact, particularly in relation to community development, empowerment and sustainability;
6. Awareness of and a strong commitment to community empowerment, social inclusion, social justice and sustainable development, with a good grasp of the importance of public transport and sustainable travel, and community-led action, to these agendas;
7. Excellent communication skills, articulate and assertive, with the ability to work constructively, diplomatically and persuasively with stakeholders at all levels and handle challenging situations;
8. Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines while dealing with competing priorities, and an evidenced ability to support a team to do so;
9. IT literate and competent using Office applications, the internet and CRM/database/recording systems;
10. Appropriate qualifications and professional development demonstrating knowledge and skills in line with the above, and a commitment to ongoing learning and development.

Other information

As you will be home-based and managing a dispersed team, we are flexible about your location. However, you will be expected to travel to our office in Huddersfield for in-person full-team meetings quarterly, and you will need to bring your team together at a central location with similar regularity in between. On top of this, attendance at occasional in-person events and partner meetings, and visits to members to learn more about community rail and assist the team, will be important. We therefore welcome applications from those with decent public transport links, not too far from a railway station to enable journeys to be made sustainably.

This is a full-time position, 37 hours per week. We use a flexi-time system, with the core hours 10am-3pm, and we are committed to being a flexible, supportive and understanding employer. This is a permanent position with a probationary period of six months.

Your new role

• This role will be leading the month end balance sheet reconciliation for cash, credit cards and intercompany accounts. They will be managing external relationships with payment card providers (WorldPay, AMEX, Adyan, Sumup, Nayax, Shopify) Trusts and Individual Donors.
• Responsible for allocating receipts & payments against invoices on the AR and AP ledger and correct coding of grant/sundry income and expenditure.
• Responsible for uploading and coding of all bank transactions (multi-currency) on a daily basis for the charity and its commercial entity, including the correct VAT treatment of income and expenditure, recording of foreign exchange differences on 8 live bank accounts.
• Responsible for monthly bank reconciliations of all bank accounts
• Responsible for control account reconciliations and allocation of transactions on control accounts for cash, streamline, all credit card providers, debtors' suspense & CAF and Intercompany accounts.
• Leading the advice to Education, Fundraising, Marketing and IOZ around monies received and returned via bank transfers from Donors or via the DD's route
• Monitoring cheque and CAF payments for un-cleared items and follow up .
• Investigate and seeing through to a successful resolution, any reconciling differences as and when they occur, ensuring any issues are settled in a timely and efficient manner and brought to FAM's attention.
• Accountable for the preparation and posting of Cash and Cashbook journals from the bank accounts on a timely basis and hitting month end deadlines.
• Responsible for investigating unallocated receipts in suspense account and allocating these to the relevant income streams
• Ensuring effective quality control and continuous improvement in all aspects of the work and responsibilities attached to this role and provide enhancements/ recommendations to FAM to safeguard that there are no auditor points raised.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Director of People & Finance, the Head of Finance will oversee financial activities in the charity with the support of a team of two.  The Head of Finance is responsible for overseeing the financial management, planning, and reporting functions to ensure the charity's fiscal health and compliance with regulatory standards. This role takes responsibility for developing and implementing financial strategies, managing budgets, forecasting, and financial risk, as well as ensuring accurate financial records and reporting for both internal and external stakeholders. The Head of Finance works closely with SLT to align financial planning with the charity's mission and business plan, provides financial insights for decision-making, and ensures that funding is managed efficiently to maximise impact. Additionally, they line manage the finance team and liaise with auditors, HMRC, pension bodies and fundraising stakeholders as required.

• Responsibility for compiling annual budgets, 3-yr forecasts (budgets, cashflows, reserves)

Engagement:

Building trusted relationships with lived experience leaders in a ethical, trauma-aware, and holistic way
You will work closely with our community to activate and strengthen our network, driving collective action and amplifying the important issues they are addressing. Building trusted relationships with lived experience leaders is key, and you will ensure that all engagement is grounded in ethical, trauma-aware, and holistic support.

Sharing knowledge with other charities supporting Spokesperson Networks
You will help share what we learn through our work with other charities and learn from them too. Using peer-led sessions to share best practice, challenges and ideas for charities working to amplify the voices of people with direct experience of social injustice.

The Role

What will I be doing?

• Provide key support to the Governance, Audit & Risk Manager on the IOP’s governance programme, including the organisation of Council Meetings and Core Governance Committee meetings, and the distribution of agendas and papers on the IOP’s Board Portal

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Well presented, confident, articulate and outgoing, you will possess an open, creative, enquiring mind and have an enthusiasm for fundraising and commitment to the aims and objectives of our clients

Essential 

• The ability to write clearly and concisely, and to adjust tone and style of writing with an understanding of the target audience 
• The ability to produce successful fundraising proposals with a good understanding of the importance of research.
• The ability to divide attention constructively between multiple projects and campaigns as required
• Confident and able to work to stretching financial targets, prioritising work and meeting deadlines.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with a positive ‘can do’ attitude 
• Ability to cultivate positive working relationships with funders, applicable also to Compton clients.
• A motivated self-starter with the enthusiasm, drive and ambition to maximise income from existing and new major supporters.

This is a significant opportunity for a Trusts fundraiser with a minimum of 2 years’ experience to work alongside senior colleagues from the UK’s leading fundraising consultancy to further develop their skills and career
