Our Helpline and expert advisers offer free, practical support to older people without enough money to live on. Through our grants programme, we support hundreds of local organisations working with older people across the UK.

Responsibilities and Person Specification:

The Media Communications Manager is responsible for overseeing Independent Age’s media communications programme, including media and PR, social media, celebrities and stories. They will lead the team to secure profile-raising coverage for our work in a range of print, online and broadcast media outlets including national news, consumer, sector-specific, and regional titles, oversee our organic social media and ensure our channels amplify our work and reach older people, decision makers and other influential stakeholders.

The Media Communications Manager will build excellent relationships with older people with lived experience of poverty, ensuring the voices of older people in financial hardship are at the centre of everything we do. They will also grow the organisations relationships with journalists, channel owners, celebrities, ambassadors, and other influencers to ensure that our media communications activity supports our organisational objective to tackle poverty in later life.    

You should have broad experience of developing and implementing innovative, successful profile-raising plans (across digital and traditional channels).  You will bring an ability to work both proactively and reactively, and experience of handling reputational or crisis issues. You should also have a passion for, and affinity with, the charity’s cause.

And in July, they head to the market to sell their produce, and to meet the mayor!

The role will focus on further development of our In Memory campaigns and events, legacy marketing and promotion as well and working with a specialist colleague to manage legacy administration.

The legacy promotion aspects of the role will include plans to maximise results from a national TV and media campaign in 2025 in collaboration with HospiceUK.

The successful candidate will line manage two team members, an In Memory and Legacy Executive and a Legacy Administrator.

As an In Memory and Legacy Manager, you will:

• Lead and develop Trinity’s in memory giving products and events, including the annual Light up a Life concert and Summer Solstice remembrance evening.
• Lead and develop legacy marketing strategies and products, and develop new legacy giving promotion events.
• Manage legacy administration, including maintaining and monitoring the legacy income pipeline, and assisting with practical legacy administration tasks.
• Develop and review regularly income and expenditure budgets and income forecasting.
• Deliver excellent stewardship for newly bereaved supporters and longstanding in memory and legacy supporters.

‘I AM Brent’ consortium

Step Up Hub leads a consortium, known as I AM Brent, that consists of six well-respected local charities who are working together to address the root causes and effects of violence affecting young people in the London Borough of Brent.

Programme Description

The programme is part of the Mayor of London’s flagship violence reduction programme, known as MyEnds. It is a place-based violence reduction initiative that adopts a public health approach. The consortium is providing an array of positive opportunities for young people and support for families, including through tailored interventions. The programme also aims to improve statutory and voluntary organisation networks and access to referral, and to ensure the voices of young people and community members are built into provision. The work is focused on the Church Road Estate, Stonebridge Estate, St Raphael’s Estate, Chalkhill Estate and Harlesden Town Centre areas.

The Role of the Network and Communications Lead

The Network and Communications Lead will be a key member of the team delivering the I AM Brent MyEnds programme. They will lead on liaison with voluntary sector providers and statutory service providers, including Brent Council, the police and schools, and on strengthening networks between them to help young people stay safe. They will be responsible for implementing I AM Brent’s communication strategy. They will subscribe to the values of co-production and work positively in accordance with I AM Brent’s Equal Opportunities, Safeguarding, Data Protection and Health and Safety policies.

In addition, the Network and Communications Lead will:

· act as the primary contact for voluntary and statutory providers,

We are seeking someone who takes a proactive approach to all

About you

- You will have proven experience in delivering complex projects in big organisations.
-  You will have led project teams through the entire project lifecycle, proactively managed risks and addressed issues, tracked and managed budgets in the hundreds of thousands of pounds and worked closely with senior management. 
- You will be an expert in project management methodology (including Agile delivery), controls and approaches flexible in their application and confident in producing plans, managing risk and change and ensuring benefits are delivered.
- You will need to be flexible in your approach, ensuring your communication and engagement style is appropriate for your audience and understanding of the impact of change on internal and external stakeholders and the business, both positive and negative.

- Be responsible for the delivery of the project’s aims and objectives.

We are looking for a new team member as a Scientific and Policy Manager - Major projects. You will be working as part of the companion animals science and policy team reporting into our Head of Companion Animals.

Our team uses robust evidence to advocate, campaign and influence attitudes, behaviour, policy and laws which effect positive change for companion, sporting and working animal welfare. 

During this fixed term contract, which will run to February 2026, you will be using your scientific knowledge and influencing skills to drive some of our key strategic objectives including the breeding of animals to ensure health and welfare. 

Fixed Term contract until February 2026.

Working hours: 35 hours per week; Monday - Friday. 

Hybrid role: Your base will be at Blackfriars, London or Horsham West Sussex. Hybrid working isn't a tick exercise for us - we live the values. The expectation for this role will be 2 days per month and this is open to flex around you and the operation.

What a day might look like for you

Here at RSPCA we know it's a cliche but no two days are the same; we've added a short summary of what the role entails, for a full insight please refer to the attached job description.

You will:

• Support the Head of Companion Animals with strategy development and implementation as necessary. 
• Deputise for the Head at internal and external meetings.
• Assist with the preparation of departmental budgets, and make decisions on behalf of the Head in their absence.
• Lead the management of multiple projects which align with the extreme breeding strategy, allocating tasks to assigned resources in order to ensure that all projects meet agreed quality, cost and timescale parameters.
• Create a strong evidence base for the RSPCA's work on extreme breeding and other welfare issues affecting companion animals, including relevant scientific, legislative, ethical and animal welfare issues and developments in the UK and internationally. 
• Monitor, review, analyse, report on and where appropriate respond to, reports and announcements from relevant bodies on proposed EU directives, domestic UK legislation, and the work of parliamentary select committees, Defra, and other governmental and NGO working groups relevant to extreme breeding.
• Be a lead representative for the Society at meetings on extreme breeding to promote its objectives to key stakeholders and target audiences up to the highest levels including government ministers, MPs and senior civil servants, industry and other external bodies, committees, working groups, government representatives and working groups and think tanks and produce associated briefing papers and reports.
• To produce reports on extreme breeding and other companion animal issues, and contribute to departmental newsletters and information sheets and material for RSPCA publications.

What makes a great Scientific and Policy Manager?

To succeed within this role, it is essential that you have: 

• A degree level qualification in a relevant biological discipline, plus relevant experience.
• Specific and extensive expertise relevant to animal welfare and companion animals specific to the post.
• A broad knowledge and understanding of animal welfare issues.
• An excellent knowledge and understanding of legislation, regulations and relevant organisations in government, industry.
• Proven experience of developing and implementing successful theories of change and impactful strategies with clear outcomes and objectives. 
• Proven experience of high level influencing.
• The ability to build and utilise networks of contacts effectively and to work in coalition with others.
• Proven expertise in developing policy positions, shaping agendas and working in coalition to achieve change.
• Demonstrable research and writing skills with the ability to effectively condense, summarise and make sense of large amounts of information quickly, pulling out salient points and spotting potential weaknesses or problems.
• Strong project management skills, along with great influencing and stakeholder management skills.
• Proven line management experience.
• You must also be aligned to our vision and values.
