Who are we?

Switchboard LGBTQIA+ exists to provide members of the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as their friends, family and those supporting them, with a listening service that they can contact via phone, instant message and email between the hours of 10am to 10pm every day.

We are happy to talk to service users about any topic they wish. Topics we often talk to service users about include: sexual health, safer sex, relationships, coming-out, gender identity, transitioning, mental health, experiences of hate crimes, support for meeting other LGBTQIA+ people and making friends, and much more.

However, we want to also be upfront and transparent about the fact that not all of our conversations are positive or constructive. Our volunteers can also be exposed to abuse from the public, manipulative callers, sexual fantasies and safeguarding concerns.

What is our over 50's club?

Our over 50's club is a new initiative for Switchboard. 

We want to create a space that enables older members of the LGBTQIA+ community to volunteer with us on our phone lines and instant messaging service, whilst providing a social element that encourages volunteers to come together at our London HQ. 

This club will meet on both Mondays and Tuesdays during the day (you can choose which day works better for you), completing a shift either between 10am to 1pm or 2:00pm to 5:00pm. You can join us weekly or bi-weekly, whichever you prefer.

We then come together between 1pm and 2:00pm to have lunch (paid for by us) and a good natter! 

Volunteers who support Switchboard in this capacity are trained to take both phone calls and respond to instant messages. They do not respond to emails, however. 

Who are we looking for?

To ensure we can provide a high quality service to those who contact us, we are looking for volunteers who:

• Simply put, like communicating and chatting with other people (you’re most likely a people-person who feels energised by this type of communication)

• Feel comfortable taking calls and speaking over the phone to people you do not already know

• Are familiar with different instant messaging platforms (such as WhatsApp and other chat tools) and the types of communication they might receive

• Are able to read between the lines to decipher messages

• Are good listeners who let others lead conversations and instead create the space they need

• Are able to ask broad, open questions to keep conversations flowing

• Understand the importance of using the right tone when communicating in writing, and are able to flex their writing style to suit different people

• Have a strong attention to detail, with a particular focus on spelling and grammar

• Are able to evaluate sources of information and identify those that can be trusted, from those that cannot

• Know when to challenge and when to step back

• Have essential digital literacy skills (such as using email tools such as gmail and outlook, search the web for information and copy and paste website URLs)

• Understand and support our mission

• Have an awareness of the challenges facing the LGBTQIA+ community

• Are empathetic in nature

• Agree to uphold our values of being non-directive and non-judgemental

Please note: volunteers must be local to Enfield. We cannot assist people to travel to the UK.

Purpose of the Role

The volunteer will assist with gardening support in one of our Enfield services, which supports people with learning disabilities. One of our residents is a keen gardener who would love to spend a few hours with a volunteer planting and cultivating the communal garden. You will be providing a befriending service to the person, promoting fitness and contributing to a welcoming and sustainable area for all in the service to enjoy.    

 Responsibilities

• To assist the person you will be supporting with Gardening activities as he wishes for the duration of your time together incl. watering plants, planting plants/seeds, weeding, cutting and trimming of bushes
• Liaise effectively with the Support Team and Team Leader of the service for any needs that the person you will be supporting may have in regards to their Gardening Goals

Skills, Attitudes and Experience

• You are reliable and punctual 
• You are able to communicate with people with learning disabilities in an understanding way
• You actively enjoy gardening 
• You will be able to use your initiative to develop a gardening plan or list of “Gardening Goals” for the person you will be supporting

Time Commitment

• As soon as possible.
• As long as possible, but ideally only in the spring and summer months.
• Twice a week, days to be determined and could vary. Not Fridays, unless after 3pm.

Training Provided

Before commencing your role, you will be required to complete the following training: 

• Volunteer Induction Training Session (approximately 2 hours) 
• Online CareSkills Training: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion; Safeguarding of Adults; Health and Safety; Fire Safety;  Manual Handling (as you will be bending and doing physical activities in the garden).
• Service Inductions, including reading the Support Plan and Risk Assessment of the person you will be supporting
• Further training is available on request as required

A bit about this role...

Every penny counts when it comes to improving the lives of the thousands of cats and kittens across the UK that need our help each year. Our Collection Box Volunteers help us raise vital funds by collecting and distributing collection boxes in their local area. Making a difference can mean as little as raising 20p, which is enough to feed one cat in our care for a day, to £150 which is the average cost of a cat in our care.

What can I expect to be doing?

As a flexible role, you have the choice to be involved in the following:

• Researching local shops, pubs and businesses to place Collection Boxes
• Delivering Collection Boxes to locations
• Recording donations and thanking local businesses and supporters
• Collecting and replacing Collection boxes when they're full
• Sharing your passion for cat welfare and promoting the work of Cats Protection

• Face-to-face fundraising – organising or helping with fundraising events, running supermarket collections and fundraising stands, monitoring collection tins
• Online fundraising – setting up online appeals, increasing social media engagement to maximise funds raised
• Marketing – spreading the word about our fundraising activities, for example on social media and with the local press  
• Completing administration – processing donations, sorting and recording donated goods, completing Gift Aid paperwork
• Championing our work – getting involved with developing new fundraising ideas and increasing community engagement

Role Description

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of an important departments in our organisation, working with the team on fundraising efforts while gaining valuable experience within Emerge Worldwide. We are looking for an individual with the passion and drive for fundraising, to help the organisation reach our fundraising goals and enable us to achieve the crucial work we do in raising awareness and prevention against sexual exploitation and sex trafficking.

We make an impactful difference in the lives of children, young people, women and professionals as well as organisations and businesses. There has been a 10% increase in sexual exploitation and sex trafficking against children (NSPCC 2022), and 99% of victims in the commercial sex industry are female (Unseen).  We desire to provide free training so as many women and girls are trained, enabling increased protection against this horrific crime. 

As a volunteer fundraiser, you’ll be instrumental in the organisation securing the essential funds that allow Emerge Worldwide to reach more people, including supporting and empowering victims and survivors. Your efforts will directly contribute to us offering services to the most vulnerable people. 

What are we looking for?

We’re seeking volunteers with experience in fundraising, fundraising research to help drive our fundraising efforts and expand our support network, including sponsorship. Any experience in bid writing is desirable. We are also seeking volunteers who have event planning and project planning experience. 

This role will include:

● Researching funding and sponsorship opportunities.

● Exploring additional fundraising opportunities and strategies.

● Developing a simple donor journey and stewardship plan to engage supporters, providing ways to deepen their connection with our charity.

● Assisting in the planning and organisation of fundraising activities and events.

● Reaching out to businesses and companies for potential partnerships and donation opportunities.

● Supporting the promotion of our fundraising initiatives and activities.

● Assisting with online fundraising efforts.

● Contributing creative fundraising ideas to boost engagement and donations.

● Collaborating with our Social Media team to create engaging content and campaigns that promote our fundraising efforts, increase visibility, and inspire community support.

We are looking for volunteers who have:

● A track record in delivering successful fundraising.

● Experience of fundraising in the charity sector is desirable but not essential.

● Experience in planning successful events and activities.

● Good knowledge of the current fundraising landscape and interest in keeping up to date with fundraising trends.

● Reliable, organised with good timekeeping.

● Able to work independently and proactively as well as in a team.

● Clear and confident in communication.

● Excellent working knowledge and comprehension of written English.

We’re looking for three volunteers over the age of 18 years old, to provide communication support to stroke survivors at one of our Support Groups, which is based at Ashwell House, 167 Verulam Road, St Albans AL3 4DW.

You’ll be volunteering:

For one and a half hours a week every week, between 10:30am and 12:00pm, in blocks of 8 sessions.

We are looking for communication service supporters to assist stroke survivors in developing their communication skills in a group setting.

The volunteers will:

· Be an effective communication service supporter you need great listening skills and be able to support people in an empathetic and non-judgemental way.

· Be willing to learn and use the technique, called ‘supported conversation’, that is used to support people with communication difficulties.

If you are someone who enjoys conversation, meeting new people and likes to try new things, then this role might be a good one for you.

About the role

The County Lead Volunteer is a key volunteer role within local Scouting with responsibility for providing outstanding leadership and support for the Districts within the County. The primary focus for the County Lead Volunteer is to ensure that Scouting is able to reach every young person in the County; open to all regardless of faith, colour or social background, because we believe Scouting has the ability to change lives. This is achieved by leading the team of District Lead Volunteers, and other County volunteers as well as working with the Growth & Communities Teams (employed staff) to provide enough places to meet the demand for Scouting, and by ensuring that every youth member has access to a high-quality balanced programme that is challenging, relevant and rewarding.

Why we want you

Prison in reach volunteers support members of the Armed Forces community who are in prison. They make a real difference by providing essential support during these incredibly difficult times.

Our volunteers work closely with veterans in custody support officers, attending veteran forums, and offering one to one support, including making applications for financial assistance. We also connect clients with organisations, to help support pathways for positive change.

Come and join our team! We value all our volunteers and the unique skills and experience they bring.

We are keen to increase volunteer diversity, especially from under-represented groups such as young people, those of working age and individuals from minoritised groups.

What you will be doing

• Attend group forums for veterans within the prison environment.
• Complete individual assessments and complete one to one personalised support for veterans within the prison environment, which includes casework.
• Promote the services available to family members.
• Establish an agreement around the rate of visits with the VCJS team and the prison.
• Record the support offered to veterans accordingly and appropriately.
• Complete monitoring reports.

The skills you need

• Be over 21.
• Have a good level of fitness to able to move around a prison quickly - including stairs.
• Excellent listening skills.
• Awareness of boundaries and confidentiality.
• Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a range of people, including prison staff, other agencies, SSAFA colleagues and clients.
• Positive, committed and non-judgemental. Non-judgemental and empathetic attitude.
• Good IT skills.
• An enhanced DBS check is required for this role. Individual prisons will determine if they authorise individuals to be based in their facilities based on security considerations. Security Vetting by His Majesty’s Prison Service is often required. For further discussion, please get in touch.
• You will need to declare potential conflicts of interest, for example any family connection with the prison.

Essex Respite & Care Association (ERCA) are looking for enthusiastic and passionate individuals, who are confident communicators and strategic thinkers who will be motivated by our mission, to join our Board of Trustees.

Our Vision is: For every adult with a mental health diagnosis living in Essex to have a healthy and fulfilling life, and to be able to access support as and when they need it.

ERCA provide support workers for adults who suffer from an acute or chronic mental health diagnosis, or those who may be socoial isolated or suffering from dementia. Our service covers, south, mid and West Essex. 

It is an exciting time to join the charity as you will be able to help us take advantage of a wonderful partnership opportunity to build organisational resilience to grow our charity and create a sustainable future. 

We are keen to welcome trustees who have experience of organisational or business transformation, ideally in a similar field or those with lived experiences of mental health issues.

We are looking for trustees who can bring expertise in the following areas:

• Fundraising / Income generation: Experience in fundraising and market presence development. Successful fundraising experience.
• Health & Social care - some with a background in care, nursing, or social work. 
• Marketing / Strategic Communication – someone with experience of designing and implementing comprehensive marketing strategies to build awareness of ERCA’s activities. 

Trustees will be required to attend a monthly Board Meeting (participation can be in person or virtually) and you will be asked to provide ad-hoc support to the management team.

The total time commitment for this role, is not expected to exceed 10 hours per month.

About the Orpheus Centre

The Orpheus Centre is a charity and college which supports young disabled adults aged 18-25 to learn essential life skills, gain formal qualifications and prepare for future employment.

There are currently 66 students with 21 living on site in Godstone, Surrey. Students come from across the UK and all have a love of the arts.

Started by lyricist and musician Sir Richard Stilgoe, the organisation offers learning, care and development opportunities at the college and in the wider community, working with professional artists, businesses and other charities.

The overall aim is to equip the students with the skills they need to live as independently as possible and to pursue their chosen careers.

Our core values are to be Joyful, Bold, Inclusive, Resilient and Determined. These values are the foundations for all our work and are what the organisation stands for.

Orpheus is a vibrant Independent Specialist college for young disabled adults who have a passion for the arts and a desire to live independently. Orpheus believes that disabled people should have the same opportunities as their non-disabled peers.

The Board of Trustees are looking for a new Trustee who is passionate about our vision to empower and equip young disabled people with the skills and confidence they need in order to live independent and fulfilling lives in the community.

Time commitment

The time commitment is between 7 and 12 days per annum, including four Board meetings including the AGM (mainly in person), four committee meetings (mainly virtual), one or two awaydays and ad-hoc attendance.

What will you be doing?

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of Orpheus, developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document and with legal and regulatory guidelines.

The role of the Finance Trustee includes all the above, but with a particular focus on the financial stability and wellbeing of the Orpheus Centre. As a member of that committee, you will play a full and active part in the work of the Finance and HR Committee, and in ensuring that the Board fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the Orpheus Centre in relation to finance and HR. You will also work closely with the Chief Executive, Director of Finance & Operations and Head of HR (as well as with the Board Chair and the committee Chair) to support them in achieving the aims of the Orpheus Centre in the areas of finance and HR.

Your responsibilities will include:

• monitoring the charity’s financial management, and seeking assurance that ensuring expenditure is in line with Orpheus objects;
• liaising as necessary with the Chair of Trustees, Chair of Finance and HR Committee, Chief Executive, Head of Finance and Head of HR;
• supporting the Finance and HR Committee and Board to monitor Orpheus’ financial viability;
• monitoring the financial processes and procedures for the control of Orpheus’ assets;
• advising on the financial implications of Orpheus’ strategic plan;
• reviewing the annual accounts and, if necessary, liaising with the Orpheus Centre’s external auditors to ensure the accounts are compliant with current SORPs;
• reviewing the auditors' representation letter and monitoring and advising on any necessary remedial measures;
• ensuring that you undertake a thorough induction programme;
• monitoring progress in implementing decisions taken at committee meetings and keeping in close touch with the work of the Finance and HR Departments in general – while always respecting the boundary between the respective roles of executives and non-executives; 
• assessing and monitoring risks relevant to the finance and HR functions of the Orpheus Centre;

and

• monitoring and scrutinising performance data within the Finance and HR Departments.

• Planning fundraising events and activities like cake sales, quiz nights and barn dances in Mid-Kent
• Providing the treasurer with information on funds raised from fundraising events

A bit more information about this role and the team

• This is a flexible role. The amount of time you offer can work to your availability and convenience.
• There may be opportunities for your activities to be fully remote and/or admin based if you'd prefer.
• You will need your own transport if you wish to attend events, ideally a car or van since items, stock and equipment will usually be needed.
• We ask that you complete training to support you in your role. This can be completed online if you have access to the internet and the necessary device (computer/laptop/tablet etc). Support can be offered or paper versions of much of the training if needed.

● Help set up and/or man stalls at events

● Help on collection days like supermarket collections events or street collections
