Who are Guts UK Charity?
People are suffering. People are dying. All because of a lack of knowledge about our guts.
Guts UK is the only charity that covers all of the digestive system, from ‘top to tail’ covering the gut, the liver and the pancreas. Guts UK works actively and collaboratively with other charities. However, with our own limited resources, we choose to focus particularly on the conditions that have no other specific charity or voice - those illnesses that really are underserved such as pancreatitis, diverticular disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), childhood gut and liver disease and digestive cancers.
Our vision is a world where digestive disorders are better understood, better treated and everyone who lives with one gets the support that they need.
Overall Purpose of the Head of Research
- To lead the delivery of the charity’s strategic research aims including managing and further developing Guts UK’s grants programme, managing our small research team, working with research partners and networks to raise awareness of our work and outcomes, further develop impact, and continue to develop and embed patient and public involvement (PPI) in our research.
- To drive new initiatives and develop and deliver tactical plans for the Research team which meet our strategic objectives.
- As a member of the charity’s senior leadership team, to contribute to the leadership, planning and delivery of strategic initiatives and the wider development of the charity.
Who we’re looking for?
As a small but growing national charity, we punch above our weight including our research programme where we invest directly and in partnership with other organisations. We are looking for an experienced healthcare research manager who is looking to take their next career step including a move to senior leadership role. With the support of our CEO, SLT, and the Board Research Strategy Committee, you will take ownership of this portfolio, further develop and successfully delivery research strategy, and develop our research investment and impact.
We currently have a small Research team, so while this role requires strategic thinking and leadership, similar to charities of our size you will need to be someone who relishes multi-tasking and isn’t afraid to roll their sleeves up to things done. In the long term we are targeting significant growth in our research portfolio, and therefore our team, and so the role will develop and evolve.
So, if you know the medical research landscape, are experienced in research grants management, enjoy working with others and building professional partnerships, have a passion for patient voices and don’t mind getting stuck in – this role could be just what you’re looking for.
Location
We have offices in London and Huddersfield which are easily accessible by road orpublic transport. We support hybrid working but attendance in one of the offices [dependent on your location] is required on an average of 2 days per week. If you are interested in the role but have queries about office-base requirements, please contactus to discuss.

We are looking for a passionate, organised, self-motivated individual with experience of corporate campaigning to lead PAN UK’s highly-impactful supermarket campaign which aims to reduce pesticide-related harms to both human health and the environment. As Campaigns Officer, you will be involved in a variety of tasks including; campaign strategy development, meeting with decision-makers, providing feedback on policies, writing communications materials and running events. You do not need to have extensive knowledge of pesticide issues but must be able to pick up new, complex topics quickly and communicate them confidently.
In addition to running the supermarkets campaign, you will be an integral part of a small, high-performing team which is also working to influence national government and local councils. It should be noted that, while in its current iteration this role will focus on PAN UK’s supermarket campaign, the organisation reserves the right to change this focus in the future to another campaign focussed on reducing UK pesticide-harms to human health and the environment.

We view diversity in its broadest form which includes, but is not limited to, the consideration of race, nationality, gender, age, class, disability, sexuality, language and educational background. We particularly encourage applications from eligible candidates from minority ethnic groups which remain under-represented in the charity sector.
We are asking all applicants to complete this diversity form, even if you choose to leave some parts blank. Your responses will remain anonymous and will not be linked to your application. ShareAction is an independent charity and an expert on responsible investment. We work to build a world where the financial system serves our planet and its people. We set ambitious standards for how financial institutions, through their investment decisions, can protect our planet and its people and campaign for this approach to become the norm. We convene shareholders to collectively push companies to tackle the climate crisis, protect nature, improve workers’ rights and shape healthier societies. In the UK and EU, we advocate for financial regulation that has society’s best interests at its core.
What you’ll do
As part of our Health team, the Initiative Lead – Healthy Markets Initiative (HMI) is responsible for driving our health-focused campaign strategy, collaborating with institutional investors, and pushing major corporates to improve their nutritional standards and consumer health impact. This role is key to advancing corporate accountability, deepening stakeholder engagement, and integrating health as a critical aspect of responsible investment practices. The Initiative Lead plays a vital role in our projects and campaigns by refining our strategy, prioritising target companies, and leading the execution of our Healthy Markets Initiative.
A typical week will see you strategising with investors, refining the financial and moral case for corporate health improvements, leading discussions with major food and beverage companies, and drafting impactful communications to stakeholders. You’ll regularly engage with institutional investors and corporate leaders, forming strong relationships and using your expertise to influence better nutrition and health outcomes within the food and beverage sectors.
Finally, in this role, you will help ShareAction harness the power of investment to build a world where the financial system promotes health and wellbeing. By scaling up the Healthy Markets Initiative, securing long-term funding, and embedding health and nutrition as critical aspects of responsible investment, you’ll contribute to shaping a healthier, more sustainable future.

What you’ll bring to the team
We’re looking for someone who’s passionate about holding global organisations accountable for their impact on people and the planet. If you’ve managed campaigns in public health, sustainability, or environmental issues, excel at stakeholder engagement, or have a knack for diving deep into complex challenges, we want to hear from you. This role is perfect for someone with experience in research, campaigning, or responsible investment who thrives on working with diverse stakeholders and driving meaningful change. Even if you don’t check every box, we encourage you to apply – skills are transferable, and we’re open to fresh perspectives on achieving our mission.
We are currently formalising our hybrid working policy; however, most of the Health team meets in the office on a weekly basis (and we require the team to come in at least once a month).
What we will do for you
We are a fast-paced organisation that has grown substantially over the past few years. We recognise that our people work hard to advocate for responsible investment and drive meaningful engagement with those who have the power to create a brighter future. Every day, they bring their expertise, passion and persistence to build a world where the financial system serves our people and planet. We want to ensure we provide the right environment for our colleagues to thrive, and we are committed to improving our employee offer where possible.
Currently, we are pleased to offer:
- A commitment to flexible working: over 60% of our employees have some sort of flexible working arrangement in place.
- Hybrid working: we are committed to supporting our staff to work in a way that suits their lifestyle and meets the requirements of their role.
- Internal promotion and development opportunities: we offer a range of ways to improve your skills and focus on what you love, including promotion, secondment, or sideways development opportunities. For some levels of roles, we also offer direct progression.
