An exciting new opportunity has arisen to join 38 Degrees’ Public Affairs & Media team. We’re looking for someone with a passion for opening up democracy, politics and the news, who is a brilliant communicator, a great team player and is highly organised, to join us as Public Affairs & Media Officer.
You’ll play a vital role in bringing to life 38 Degrees’ media and public affairs strategy, in service of 38 Degrees’ mission: to make our country fairer, more respectful and sustainable. As we adjust to a shift in our political environment, this brand new role will relentlessly and powerfully amplify 38 Degrees campaigns and the voices of our supporters to the general public, the media and decision makers in the UK.
Working alongside the Public Affairs & Media Manager, and with colleagues across the campaigns team and beyond you’ll spend every day trying to shine a light on the actions our supporters take on campaigns they care about. From monitoring what’s going on in Parliament – and when it’s the perfect moment for the 38 Degrees community to use our collective voices – to being able to put together media packages that are irresistible to journalists, you’ll know how to skillfully use the public affairs and media tools at our disposal to win campaigns, raise our profile and build our reputation.
Your background and experience
You’ll have a proven track record of great political and news judgement, and have played a key role in using these skills in a campaigning environment to deliver powerful campaigns that deliver impactful media and public affairs results. That could be from working in a press office or media environment, to working with (or for) a politician. It’s possible you are more experienced at either media work or public affairs work – but either way, you’ll know what it takes to use both to influence decision makers and land a big news story. We’re looking for a person who knows the political and news agenda each day, and can help set it too.
The person recruited will need to be a brilliant communicator, as at home speaking to 38 Degrees supporters and empowering them to act as media case studies, as you are pitching a story to a journalist or handling enquiries from MP’s offices.
We’re looking for someone who can show they’re highly organised, know how to prioritise and with a track record of successful project management, when it comes to partnership work and events.
To succeed in this role, you’ll need to show us you’re team-focused and know what it takes to build positive and productive relationships with colleagues, in a fast paced environment – where the news cycle means that priorities can sometimes change for all of us at a moment’s notice.
You’ll relish a newsroom atmosphere and will be happy that no two days at 38 Degrees are the same, as you focus on amplifying campaigns and making a difference which helps change lives, little by little.
About us
38 Degrees is one of the UK’s biggest campaigning communities, involving over a million supporters who campaign to make the UK a better place. We’re united by a shared vision to create a fairer and more respectful UK and a more sustainable world.
In the space of a week, millions of supporters could be campaigning on anything from protecting our NHS and stopping cuts to Universal Credit, to saving local green spaces and protecting our democracy.
38 Degrees is fiercely independent. We are primarily funded by small donations from hundreds of thousands of members of the public from all over the UK. This independence means we never have to hold ourselves back from taking on those with power and can truly listen to our supporters.
Why you’ll want to work here
The 38 Degrees culture is honest, kind, supportive, courageous, and respectful. We move fast, and frequently change plans to respond to events. We work hard but we also have fun.
We regularly enjoy team away days and social hours.
Benefits include:

And thanks to our flexible home working approach and network of offices, we have a staff team that is increasingly based across the UK. We’re keen to continue diversifying geographically, so that we’re rooted in our supporters’ communities.

About The Young Foundation
Today, The Young Foundation’s mission is to shape a fairer, greener future. We support locally-led action, building knowledge around the issues people tell us they care about. We involve communities in research, and delivering programmes to shape a stronger, fairer society. We work collaboratively to improve lives and address shared challenges, driving social change for stronger communities and a fairer future.
Our strategy, the Power of Participation, sets out our ambitious, five-year plan.

You will lead and support delivery of a portfolio of projects including our partnership with University of Manchester to deliver the JUST Centre; work with national government and devolved nations on public participation and environmental legislation; and pioneering policymaking and practice with local and combined authorities to build readiness, resilience and strategies to ensure a just transition.
This is a crucial moment in the UK’s journey to net zero. We know that a fairer, stronger, green and digital economy can regenerate local places and improve people’s lives. But, to achieve this, policymakers across the UK need to better-understand people’s readiness for change, giving practical support, inspiring trust, and mobilising local action. Community engagement and participation is vital in a fair, sustainable, and socially transformative shift to net zero.
Leading a small team, and in collaboration with our external affairs, research and innovation teams, you will have the opportunity to drive forward a critical agenda for the UK, building practices, skills, thought leadership and innovation to drive a just and fair transition. The Degrees Initiative is a UK-based NGO that builds the capacity of developing countries to evaluate solar radiation modification (SRM), a controversial proposal for reducing some impacts of climate change by reflecting sunlight away from the Earth. Degrees is neutral on whether SRM should ever be used, but we believe that developing countries should be empowered to conduct their own research and to play a central role in SRM discussions. The initiative has been working in different forms for over a decade and our work receives worldwide coverage and widespread acclaim.
Degrees’ programmatic work builds capacity through research grants, workshops, and community-building—all across the Global South. The initiative has been steadily growing since becoming a charity, and we plan on continuing to expand. Over the next few years, Degrees will offer grants to research teams in new countries and disciplines, support the scientists as they develop into regional leaders, and keep building a global community of experts.
The Staff Scientist position offers a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate to move into or advance in the nonprofit sector while helping scale-up the organisation’s work. They will get to work with some the world’s leading SRM experts both inside and outside of Degrees and play a central role in building an initiative that is changing the field of SRM.
Job purpose
The Degrees Modelling Fund was launched in 2018 and has grown into the largest SRM research programme in the world. It supports almost 150 scientists across the Global South as they model how SRM could affect the climate in their regions, and they are becoming influential leaders in the SRM conversation.
This is a good start, but our plans are much more ambitious. We now want to support the Southern teams to move to the next level in their development. National projects will evolve into regional research programmes—in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, for instance. These regional programmes will inform policy processes by writing reports and policy briefs. Centralised downscaling and bias correction will reduce the barriers to SRM research across the Global South, allowing more countries to do their own SRM research and increasing existing teams’ output.
Degrees’ new Staff Scientist will be central to this. As an expert in climate impacts modelling, they will help the teams develop regional research projects. They will support Southern scientists to get access to the data that they need, will advise Degrees on how we can best support Southern SRM research, and develop new work streams as needed. In all of this, the Staff Scientist will work closely with the 26 modelling teams that Degrees supports across the Global South, plus our range of partners and volunteer research collaborators. In this, their work will be central to the next stage of Degrees’ development, helping to ensure that developing countries have the evidence and expertise to evaluate SRM and to play a central role in research and discussions.
About the position
The position will appeal to someone with a strong academic track record who is looking to use their skills and training outside of academia—for an organisation that is looking to use research to change the world, rather than just for research’s sake. Because the right candidate may not wish to leave academia entirely, the position may be less than full time, which would be negotiated (but not less than 60% time at Degrees).
Specific responsibilities include:
-
Plan and implement the new lines of work, above, and to develop new ones in cooperation with other staff members, Degrees-funded researchers, and volunteers;
-
Organise and facilitate regionalisation workshops approximately each quarter;
-
Manage and deepen relationships with regional SRM experts;
-
Work with a future science writer to deliver the annual scientific reports;
-
Learn the goals and needs of scientists in each region and, to the extent possible, facilitate their provision;
-
Directly support our funded scientists, as appropriate;
-
Help deliver the Degrees Global Forum on SRM, taking place 12-16 May in Cape Town;
-
In consultation with the CEO and Programmes Director, set annual plans (including budgets), objectives and key results; .
-
Support our policy engagement, communications, and reporting activities.
Putting developing countries at the centre of the SRM conversation

38 Degrees is fiercely independent. We are primarily funded by small donations from hundreds of thousands of members of the public from all over the UK. This independence means we never have to hold ourselves back from taking on those with power and can truly listen to our supporters.
Why you’ll want to work here
The 38 Degrees culture is honest, kind, supportive, courageous, and respectful. We move fast, and frequently change plans to respond to events. We work hard but we also have fun. We regularly enjoy team away days and social hours.

And thanks to our flexible home working approach and network of offices, we have a staff team that is increasingly based across the UK. We’re keen to continue diversifying geographically, so that we’re rooted in our supporters’ communities.

To be successful in your application you must meet the essential requirements for this role and answer the questions below which are part of the selection criteria. Without completion of this task your application cannot be considered.
The successful candidate must have the right to work in the UK at the time of appointment.
Application Questions (max word count: 2000 words across all questions)
1. Tell us about a digital campaign you have been part of, including what you were trying to achieve, how you developed a strategy, how you brought team members together to action the plan, and what the results you achieved.
2. 38 Degrees is a digital-first, people-powered campaigning organisation where millions of people do something small to add up to bigger political and corporate change. Tell us about a time you’ve worked with a similar model – and why you think this specific form of campaigning can make a difference in the country.
3. Alongside offering free petition technology to individual members of the public, our CBY platform enables us to partner with other organisations so that they can run campaigns on our systems. Knowing what you do about 38 Degrees and our political positioning, who do you think would be a good new partner organisation for us to approach to work with and why?
4. You’ve noticed a news story blowing up this morning about unfair conditions for delivery drivers, it’s headline news across the country. We want to get a petition live by this afternoon and ideally have someone with a personal story as the petition starter. What sort of person would make the best story teller, and how would you go about finding them and persuading them to start a petition?
