YOUTH DEVELOPMENT WORKER (OASIS HUB OLDHAM)

PART-TIME, 32 HOURS PER WEEK

Oasis are now in a position to employ an experienced Youth Development Worker to work alongside the children’s, youth and community hub team in Oldham. The role will be focussed on the Oldham South community (surrounding Oasis Academies Oldham and Limeside) working closely with the academies as part of Oasis Hub Oldham.

As a Youth Development Worker you will;

· Work as part of the community hub team to plan and deliver youth services that address the needs of the local neighborhood, including open access, holiday and community activities.

· Deliver targeted programmes of work for young people impacted by youth violence.

· Build positive and supportive relationships with young people to develop their skills, knowledge and aspirations.

· Strengthen and sustain working relationships with local partners to provide holistic, sustainable and bespoke support for young people.

· Support communities impacted by critical incidents.

Amongst other requirements, the successful post holder must have:

· Relevant experience OR qualification in Youth & Community (JNC), Social Work (QSW) or SEND.

· Proven experience working with young people ‘at risk’.

· Reliability, with a flexible approach to changes and able to work unsociable hours.

* Deliver first line support to resolve learning and development queries and escalate as appropriate.

Primary function of the role

This role is part of the Wiltshire Project which provides individual and family support to domestic abuse for victims and their children.

Working with children and young people, the team will focus on delivering timely and high quality, trauma informed support to children who have been the victims of domestic abuse.

This is a fixed term position to November 2025.

This exciting post will be working with children who have experienced or been affected by domestic abuse. Focusing on standard and medium risk cases, this role will provide practical and emotional support to children and young people, with an emphasis on early intervention and awareness raising.

In addition, there will be the opportunity to work with the team and manager to develop and deliver new group work provision for young people.

Key tasks and responsibilities include:

• To provide high quality, specialist support to children who have lived in a domestically abusive family.
• Enabling young people to access statutory and other services where appropriate.

• To deliver educational, time-bound, 1 to 1 support sessions for children and young people.
• Provide specialist support to child victims, with a focus on empowering young people to make informed decisions.

• Manage a caseload of low to high risk children and young people, predominantly through face to face appointments but also utilising virtual technologies.

Purpose of the Job:

This role is within our crisis alternative service – Safe Space - which is an out of hours service providing a safe and welcoming space for people who are feeling distressed and experiencing crisis. The service operates 365 days a year from 12:00pm(midday)-11:30pm across all of our boroughs. The shift pattern for this role is 4:30-11:30pm. This will be on a rota basis across support workers.

Staff within the service will provide person-centred, practical and emotional support, face to face or via telephone on a one-to-one or group basis to individuals experiencing mental health crisis. This will consist of 1:1 support; de-escalating and providing interventions, signposting for specialised or longer-term support, and delivering collaborative self-management plans with clients to improve mental wellbeing. The aim of this service is to de-escalate and prevent further crises.

The objectives of the service include:

• To improve the mental wellbeing of people experiencing mental health crisis in HFEH.
• To provide support to clients accessing the service- for instance: signposting, de-escalation, planned wellbeing activities etc.
• To contribute to an improvement in individual mental wellbeing.
• To remain a source of independent support for all clients.
• To treat service users with respect, dignity and personalised support
• To raise awareness of mental health services available with the goal to improve long term mental health and reduce social isolation
• To increase self-management skills of those accessing the service
• To reduce the use of police, ambulance and statutory mental health services whilst experiencing crisis.
• To reduce the use of statutory crisis services by people experiencing mental ill health without positive outcomes for the individual.

Key Responsibilities:

There will also be the opportunity to feed into the Communications team on external campaigns that the charity develops to build awareness and showcase Centre 33’s amazing work, including an upcoming capital appeal. You will also work closely with the Operations and Finance teams to understand the charity’s services and funding needs, and to ensure timely sharing of programme information to facilitate funding applications and reporting to existing grant holders. You will support the Development & Partnerships Lead and other team members with Trust and Foundation applications and other fundraising activities as required.

You will be confident establishing new and growing existing meaningful relationships and will maintain clear records of progress in our CRM (Donorfy). Working with colleagues across the organisation, you will prepare high-quality communications, proposals and pitches which demonstrate our deep understanding of young people’s needs and help us to successfully meet our fundraising goals.

Main Roles

• To provide specialist legal advice and information on housing, welfare benefits, debt, and other issues as required by the service.
• To help improve the situation of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants through participating in policy work, campaign and developing networks and partnerships.
• To help improve LRMN’s delivery of legal advice and information service.

Specific Duties

• Act for clients where necessary by completing forms, calculating repayments, negotiating and/or advocating on behalf of clients, drafting or writing letters, advising on and preparing appeals and dealing with telephone calls and emails as required
• Maintain accurate and orderly client records
• Assist clients with other related problems where they are an integral part of their case and refer to other advisers or specialist agencies as appropriate
• Challenge/support with challenging decisions such as S.21 or homelessness (Senior Advisor)
• Represent clients at tribunals when necessary (Senior Advisor)
• Check whether clients are in receipt of all the benefits they are entitled to, and help them claim any relevant benefits that they haven’t claimed yet, or obtain increases if their benefits are not paid at the correct rate
• Support clients understand benefit decisions, and challenge them (where appropriate) by way of mandatory reconsiderations and appeals
• Actively update legal knowledge on housing, welfare benefits, debt and other related areas of law
• Develop partnerships and attend advice related networking meetings
• Contribute and participate in policy work beneficial to our clients
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of external agencies and changes in legislation, policies and practices and adapt and share this information as appropriate
• Adhere to LRMN’s casework management systems and procedures
• Implement corrective actions in a timely manner, particularly where these issues are identified through file reviews
• Participate in team meetings and contribute to the team’s development

Personal Specification

Essential

• Minimum of 1 year (Advisor) or 2 years (Senior Advisor) of full-time experience of providing 1-1 specialist legal advice and information on housing and welfare benefits.
• Experience of working to strict deadlines and managing a heavy caseload.
• Experience of supporting asylum seekers, refugees and migrants.
• Knowledge/ experience of working in the not-for-profit sector.
• Understanding of key recent and upcoming changes on housing, benefits and other relevant legislations and the effects of these on our clients.
