About the Association
- The Association of Anaesthetists (the Association) represents the life-changing, life-saving profession of anaesthesia – by supporting, informing and inspiring a worldwide community of over 10,000 members.

- The Association provides education, research funding, produces best practice guidelines, offers wellbeing support and provides grant-funding for international work in low-income countries. We also publish the world’s leading anaesthetic journal Anaesthesia and maintain a renowned Heritage Centre at our head office at 21 Portland Place, London.
Environment and Sustainability Lay Member role description:
The Association is seeking to appoint a lay member with expertise in the environment and sustainability to join its Safety, Standards, Environment and Sustainability Committee which plays a key role in the driving the sustainability strategy and workstream for the organisation.
The committee actively promotes safe, carbon friendly healthcare across the profession and internationally. It has supported a national fellowship in environmentally sustainable anaesthesia in partnership with Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, and offers awards to recognise excellence in sustainability in the specialty.
The Association also supports a network of environment champions across hospitals in the United Kingdom and Ireland to encourage collaboration and share examples of best practice. Alongside the Greener NHS Team, the Association is part of a joint task group to achieve the goals related to anaesthesia that have been set out in the NHS long term plan, of which a particular focus is reducing the impact of anaesthetic gases. In January 2023 a joint statement was issued with NHS England (NHSE) and the Royal College of Anaesthetists supporting NHSE’s plan to decommission desflurane by early 2024. Work continues on reducing nitrous oxide waste.
Lay members bring expertise, judgment and balance which complement the skills of the elected directors and trustees. Their principal assets will be their independence and non-clinical expertise.
Purpose of the role:
We are keen to appoint a lay member with a background in one or more of the following areas:
- Environment and sustainability in a public or charity sector context.
- Patient and public advocacy and engagement in the environment.
- The use of advocacy in political and media arenas.
- Evaluation and impact measurement relating to environment and sustainability including the use of high-quality science
Responsible to: Chair of the Safety, Standards, Environment & Sustainability Committee

Time commitment
The dates for committee meetings are set 12 months in advance.
- The Safety, Standards, Environment and Sustainability Committee meets three a year as via videoconference. Meetings are held on a Friday, either via videoconference or at 21 Portland Place, London
- The lay member is expected to attend each committee meeting
- Some correspondence in between meetings is likely

Terms and conditions of appointment:
- Appointments are for an initial one year term, renewable for up to four years in total.
- The lay member will be a full member of the relevant committee
- Appointment will be subject to an application process which includes interviews and two references will be required for the successful candidate
- This is a voluntary role (unremunerated except for out of pocket expenses)
- The lay member must complete a declaration of conflicts of interest

Job Title: Trustee (3 roles) – with one or more areas of core expertise
Responsible to: The Board of Trustees

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
The Baca Charity is currently looking for Trustees with expertise in at least one of the following areas:
- Property /social housing expertise including an understanding of housing law, regulations and property market/trends.
- Education – access to education, apprenticeship, progression to FE or HE education to facilitate development of opportunities to support vulnerable people towards employment / entrepreneurship. Safeguarding of children, young people and vulnerable adults.

LEVEL OF COMMITMENT
All trustees are required to attend quarterly evening and one full day Board meetings. Board meetings usually take place at the Baca main office, Loughborough, Leicestershire. As appropriate, meetings could also take place virtually.
In addition to reading papers and preparing for meetings/conference calls, Trustees may be called upon for specific advice if they have particular expertise in a given area.
According to their individual skills and experience, Trustees may also be invited to serve on Baca’s Finance or Staff & Young People Wellbeing Committees or on ad-hoc Working Groups. Committees meet quarterly, usually in advance of Board meetings.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Marie Curie Companion Service is a professional service provided by trained volunteers who offer one-to-one companionship and support to people with a terminal illness and their families. The service would not be able to reach those most in need if it was not for the commitment and hard work of the volunteers delivering the service.
Companion volunteers provide companionship and emotional support, practical support, short breaks for carers and help with signposting for information and support. These sessions can take place both in person and over the phone.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING.
Your role will include some of, but not be restricted to, the following tasks:
- Carry out weekly visits with the person(s) you’re supporting, as agreed with the Volunteer Co-ordinator. This could be in a variety of settings, e.g. family home, a care home or in the community.
- Provide one-to-one companionship and support. For example:
- Offering a listening ear and spending time engaging in every-day conversation, activities or hobbies with the person you are supporting.
- Driving clients to pre-arranged health or social care (e.g. to medical appointments) or taking short trips out.
- Helping with small, daily tasks, e.g. making tea or accessing the internet.
- Allowing carers to have a short break.
- You may be supporting your client’s family or carers before or
during bereavement. This may involve offering emotional
support, signposting to relevant local support services or finding out
information as requested
(This is only an outline as support will vary according to individual needs. Companion
volunteers do not provide nursing or personal care, or offer counselling or advice)
- Keep your manager informed of any changes to the situation, or any significant happenings in connection to the person you’re supporting and/or their family, either in person or by phone
- Submit regular visit reports to your manager and update relevant computer systems as required
- Be reliable and committed to regularly spending time with someone and offering support
- Attend individual sessions with your Volunteer Co-ordinator, training and group events as required
- Represent the Marie Curie Helper service positively to those using the service

We are looking for volunteers from a range of backgrounds to support the webchat facility of our Advice and Information Service. With your support we will be able to make a difference to more people who are affected by mental illness.

About the service
Our Advice & Information Service provides practical advice and information to our clients. Our team receives phone calls, e-mails, webchats and letters from people with mental illness, their families, employers and professionals.
What you will be doing as an Advice & Information Volunteer
You will use a computer or laptop to chat with clients and provide simple advice or information via webchat. You will also record information.
Common topics that our service provides advice on are:
- Mental health conditions and symptoms
- Living with mental illness
- Discrimination
- Police, courts and prison
- Mental health laws
- Rights and restrictions
- Support for carers
What will make you a great fit for this role?
We are looking for people 18 or over who are committed, reliable and able to communicate well with people from different backgrounds. You must be able to use the following:
- The internet
- Microsoft word
- Microsoft outlook
- Microsoft teams
You must also own a computer or laptop and have access to the internet. Unfortunately, we can’t provide these.
Maybe you:
- Have lived experience of mental illness
- Care for someone with a mental illness
- Are gaining experience for employment
- Are a retired health professional
- Want to make a difference to the lives of people with mental illness
How do we select our volunteers?
We will read through the information you include on your application form and we will invite suitable applicants for an informal discussion, which will take place online. Following the discussion, you will complete a few quick computer-based tasks.
When is the informal discussion?
We will be looking to meet you online around mid August 2024.
Will there be training provided?
You will be given self-directed training with remote support from our friendly team on the following areas:
- Research skills
- Managing clients via webchat
- Providing advice
- Dealing with clients at risk of harm
- How to use our systems
The above training will take you about 15 hours to complete in total.
You will also need to complete a few short e-learning courses as part of your training with us. E-learning courses take between 30 mins – 1 hour to complete.
You will also have access to our service specific training on topics such as:
- The Mental Health Act/ Mental Capacity Act
- The Care Act
- The Equality Act
- The Mental Health System
What are the time commitments?
At present our webchat facility is open between 10:00am – 1:00pm Monday to Friday.
Each shift generally runs from 9:30 – 1:30 to allow time to get settled before a shift and tie up any loose ends at the end of a shift.
We would like a commitment from you of at least 1 shift per week.
There may be periods when we ask you to support our team outside of these times to allow for meetings or training sessions.
When does it start?
We are looking to recruit volunteers to begin training at the end of August 2024, with the intention of starting to liaise with clients in September 2024.
You won’t be able to start with our service until we have received a satisfactory Basic DBS check, and verify you are allowed to volunteer in the UK.
When is the closing date?
The closing date is Sunday 28th July 2024. We may close the vacancy early if we receive a high number of applications.
Where is it based?
You will be based at home. This means we can accept applications from all over England.

Do you want to take part in vegan volunteering around your local area?
You can do that – right here at The Vegan Society.
We have an ever-growing Community Network of vegans just like you, who have a passion to volunteer and promote veganism where they live.
Every month, our Network choose from a range of outreach tasks. These could include town centre stalls, writing to a councillor or MP, sharing our campaigns on social media or contacting local businesses. You're in control of how much or how little you do.
As an Advocate, you will have a network of other Advocates and an Organiser in your area. Your Organiser will be your main point of contact. They will send you tasks every month and ask you to feed back on what you've completed and any positive outcomes.
Why do we need you to volunteer?
As the vegan community grows, veganism itself becomes better understood. We're finding that more people are looking to The Vegan Society to find out what being vegan is all about.
Local communities are starting to see the vegan movement as something real and something that’s happening in their area. More people are embracing a vegan lifestyle, which we welcome. From new businesses, to families, to councillors, many people need support. This could be with a range of topics: going vegan, finding correct information around a vegan diet, providing vegan options in their business, MPs listening to vegan constituents, and learning about our work.
Local issues are often unique and more varied than national issues. Our volunteers from local areas are vital! They enable us to share our messages and campaigns in an effective way. Research tells us that people are far more likely to trust information from a peer rather than an outside expert, so community volunteering vastly increases the impact of our campaigns.
Our network of committed local vegans across the country is growing! The Vegan Society organises various outreach activities to influence change in every level of society. There are a range of activities going on all the time, from general educational stalls at events to meeting with local policy influencers.
Advocates are a crucial voice in their own community. They ensure that our campaign messages are spread far and wide. They provide a strong vegan presence in local communities.
What does the Advocate role involve?
Being an Advocate for veganism with The Vegan Society will mean communicating with people in your local community. You'll share the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. You will form part of a local group, headed up by a local Organiser. The Organiser will feed back your collective efforts to staff. You will also be invited to our private Facebook group, for vegan socialising and ideas sharing.
You’ll stay in touch with the Organiser and bring your passion to tasks. Activities can range from staffing a stall to giving a talk at an employee event. It could also mean writing to a local newspaper or lobbying an MP.
Messaging can differ every month. Part of our mission statement is to ensure people can remain vegan, so you might focus on getting more vegan options available in local businesses. Or within our Live Vegan for Less campaign, you may share cheap vegan recipes to help people with the cost of living.
When acting as an Advocate, you will use The Vegan Society’s branding and messaging guidelines. Your local Organiser will guide you in doing this, as they hold physical resources and handbooks. You can report any issues and feedback you have to your Organiser. You can also contact staff if your Organiser isn't available or you have any problems.
What training and support is available?
You will be provided with a big welcome and full induction from your local Organiser. They will introduce you to the group and any actions that are ongoing. Any training and development will be provided via your Organiser, and you can also ask for specific training on any areas that you need some development in.
What skills would be useful in doing this role?
- The ability to stay motivated in order to achieve the best possible outcomes
- Good email etiquette, responding in a timely manner
- Committed to veganism and the mission of The Vegan Society

How much time do I need to invest?
For Advocates, we ask for people to engage in a minimum of four to six actions per year. An example of an action could be writing to an MP or holding a stall. But the more you can do, the better! On occasion, there may also be online meetings to plan for actions or provide training.

About Us
In the last nine years, Kandinsky has developed a reputation as one of the most exciting emerging theatre companies in the UK.
We make theatre collaboratively, alternating periods of research and writing with work in rehearsal rooms with actors, designers and musicians. This allows us to make shows on an eclectic range of subjects, united by a theatrical style that’s both inventive and entertaining.
Since 2015, we’ve worked extensively at New Diorama Theatre, where we were one of the first associate companies. Work made at NDT has won OffWestEnd and Peter Brook Awards, toured the UK and transferred to the prestigious Schaubühne in Berlin. We’ve also worked extensively beyond NDT, including on main-stage commissions at the Royal Exchange Theatre Manchester and Schauspielhaus in Vienna. Our next show will open in a major London theatre in 2025.
In the last year, we’ve travelled the UK to develop new work at regional venues, made our first ever adaptation with Central School of Speech and Drama, and created our first show for younger audiences, which toured London schools throughout summer 2023. The company is at an exciting moment as we work to tour work more regularly outside of London, develop our educational work and expand our audiences and participants.
Kandinsky is run by joint artistic directors Lauren Mooney and James Yeatman, who oversee the company both artistically and administratively.
Trustee roles and responsibilities
Kandinsky is a registered charity (no. 1134756) and a Company limited by Guarantee (no. 7169361). Board members have legal responsibilities as a Company Director, including making sure we are compliant with company and employment law, health and safety legislation, equal opportunities and laws around working with children and young people. You will read and sign off on our annual accounts and, together with the other Trustees, make sure we don’t do anything that might place our funds, assets or reputation at risk.
This role has a particular focus on financial expertise: you will have familiarity with budgets and accounts, in particular the annual account requirements of both Companies House and the Charity Commission. You will be able to ensure that we are meeting all legal financial requirements, as well as helping us build strategies and processes that can ensure our ongoing financial resilience.
You will be able and willing to:
· Support the core team to ensure Kandinsky’s financial resources meet the organisation’s present and future needs, and maintain good communication about this with the wider Board.
· Ensure Kandinsky has appropriate financial policies, accounting procedures and controls in place.
· Oversee the preparation and examination of annual accounts.
· Present these accounts at the AGM, drawing attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way.
· Ensure that there is no conflict between any financial income and the aims and objects of the charity.
· Ensure Kandinsky’s compliance with appropriate legislation.
Beyond your particular financial oversight, a Trustee’s role is to support the company’s work in whatever way feels appropriate to you and fits with your skills: helping the company grow, raising the profile of our work, challenging us in areas where we can do better or extending our knowledge base. We hope that being on the Board of a growing company will be exciting and that we can work with you to find a mutually rewarding way of working together, one that reflects your skills, experience and interests.
We do not expect our Trustees to donate to the company or ask others to do so. However, if any Trustees are willing and able to help us identify people who might become donors, this could form part of their work on the Board.
Work of a Trustee
The Board meet four times a year. Meetings last approx. 90 mins to two hours. Given recent developments in work/life balance, we aim for this to be a 50% split between online and in-person meetings. These meetings take place in roughly March, June, September and December annually – but exact dates are subject to change depending on rehearsal periods for shows.
We circulate an agenda and any papers prior to the meeting. Because of the company’s size, papers are minimal; these might include minutes from the previous meeting, management accounts and, at the Annual General Meeting, the company’s yearly accounts, to be read and signed-off. We ask Trustees to read any papers in advance of the meeting.
Trustee positions are voluntary. Most Trustees cover their own expenses, but we are committed to building a diverse Board and we are happy to support with expenses where there is need. However, as we are a small company, without any regular core cost funding, this will need to be by mutual agreement and on a case-by-case basis.
We will discuss the time commitment as part of the recruitment process, as well as how we can best support candidates based outside of London and those with caring responsibilities of any kind.
