About us

Who we are

★★★★★ ‘No-one else makes theatre quite like this’

Time Out on Dinomania, 2019

Kandinsky makes and tours new devised theatre nationally and internationally.

With commissions from theatres including Royal Exchange Manchester, New Diorama London, and Schauspielhaus Wien; our shows have toured the UK and transferred internationally to the Schaubühne, Berlin and 59E59 Theater New York.

We are currently preparing a new show show which will open in a major London theatre in 2025, while also developing new work; seeking out new subjects, artistic collaborators and audiences.

Our culture and values

While the subject matter of our shows is varied, we begin every process collaboratively, bringing research and ideas into rehearsal rooms with diverse ensembles of performers and other creative artists. It allows us to make theatre that is not only playful and entertaining, but which disrupts, challenges and enlivens an audience’s view of the world.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

Adopted by Kandinsky's Board, April 2023

Kandinsky’s core values are equity, transparency, collaboration and reach. We strive to be democratic and equitable in our rehearsal rooms, creating a meaningfully collaborative process and recognising that plurality of voice is our great creative strength.

We aim to provide the best possible working environment for any and all colleagues, employees, contractors and volunteers: an environment based on collaboration and mutual respect, in which everyone feels safe to work to the best of their abilities and knows that, should problems arise, they will be heard and listened to. As an equal opportunities employer, we are opposed to harassment and bullying in any form. We work to ensure a professional culture in which, from the top down:

§  No individual or group receives less favourable treatment because they hold one or more characteristics protected by the Equality Act 2010 (Age, Disability, Gender reassignment, Marriage or civil partnership, Pregnancy and maternity, Race, Religion or belief, Sex, Sexual orientation)

§  Every individual has access to a working environment that encourages respectful, considerate, dignified and non-sexualised working relationships

§  Every individual is empowered to feel safe and listened-to in their professional environment, to be treated and to treat one another with dignity and respect

§  Threatening, aggressive, bullying behaviour, harassment or unwanted sexual attention, language or behaviour are not tolerated at any level or by any individual.

We subscribe to Equity’s Safe Spaces campaign, which seeks to make rehearsal spaces “free of…bullying and harassment of any kind.” As well as having in-company policies around Equality, Safety and Harassment, we try to ensure that company members have good access to their unions’ support, and that all companies are offered optional visits from Equity union representatives.

Principles

§  We ask everyone working for Kandinsky to consider the impact that their actions or comments may have on others and to take responsibility for their own behaviour.

§  We will encourage our teams to report any instances of harassment or bullying they experience or observe and will establish a clear procedure for this. This procedure will be made clear to all collaborators, colleagues and employees at the outset of any new project

§  We will work to create a culture of trust and mutual support on our projects in which the calling-out of harassment, bullying or inequality feels possible for those working at any level

§  This policy is endorsed and supported by the Board of Trustees, who undertake to support the Co-Artistic Directors in managing cases which may result in disciplinary action and / or dismissal

§  Employees, freelancers or volunteers who make complaints, and any others who give evidence in connection with such complaints, will not be victimised, i.e. they will not be discriminated against, harassed or bullied in retaliation for their actions. Victimisation is also discrimination contrary to the equality laws and to this policy, and will be subject to the same process and procedures.

Our commitment relates to all forms of prohibited conduct as outlined in the Equality Act 2010.
