The role in a nutshell:
As a People Development Research Volunteer you would work with our Learning, Development, and Wellbeing team to research, identify, propose, and make recommendations for wellbeing, learning and development (L&D) projects as directed by the team. This is an excellent opportunity for somebody with an interest and passion for wellbeing and L&D. Combining research and analytical skills with an interest in all aspect’s wellbeing and L&D. About the Role

Purpose of the Role: The Volunteer Research Assistant will support White Ribbon Alliance UK's efforts to improve maternal and reproductive health by conducting research, analysing data, and contributing to reports and publications. This role is crucial for informing our advocacy and program development.

Following the success of the first-ever Council Climate Action Scorecards last year, Climate Emergency UK is looking to create the second edition of the Action Scorecards. Analysing council climate action only becomes valuable if you track the progress that has been made. We need your help to create the 2025 Action Scorecards and score councils on their actual climate action.
There are two cohorts: August-September 2024 (Cohort 1) and late September-October 2024 (Cohort 2)
Why are we doing this?
We’re in a climate crisis, and local councils have the power and influence over around 30% of emissions in their local area. Councils are uniquely placed to make a real impact on emissions within their area. But we know that councils can be taking more effective action as the average score in the 2023 Action Scorecards was only 32%. The Scorecards are a campaigning tool that residents can use to hold their council to account on their climate action, and lobby for specific, targeted change. We have also found evidence of 1 in 5 councils using and referencing the Scorecards in committee meetings, reports or in their own press releases and organisations across the sector are utilising the data from the Scorecards as well. Finally, this UK wide assessment will demonstrate where the UK and devolved governments need to provide more support to local authorities in order for them to take even further action.
How can you help?
We need at least 200 volunteers to pull this project off! You can help by volunteering to score councils on each of the 7 sections of our Action Scorecards. This year volunteers will be marking specific sections for councils (e.g. marking only all the Transport questions for the councils you are marking). You will score councils in your particular section by researching publicly available information on councils’ websites and relevant strategies. Training and guides will be made available to you to help in the process.
Scoring one council on one section will take approx. 2 hrs (though the more you do, the quicker you will be). It’s best if you are able to work from a laptop or a computer with good internet, as you will need to be able to access council websites and our online scoring system.
We’d like you to mark at least 10 councils on one of the seven sections over a period of 4 weeks. This equates to a total of 20 hours of volunteering over 4 weeks, roughly 5 hours a week, but this can be done at your own pace.
What experience do I need?
We will provide training so you don’t need any experience. If you have previous experience of working in or campaigning at a local council level that is a bonus, but not needed to apply.
What will I gain?
This is a great opportunity to understand how local councils work, as well as understanding local government policy on Climate Action. This is a good chance to improve your research and analytical skills too. By helping with this project you will be making a real contribution to the fight against the climate crisis.
What we need from you:
You will need to attend a total of 2 sessions:
- Scorecards Volunteer Inductions: You will need to attend one induction session on either Tuesday 6th or Thursday 8th August 2024 from 5:30 to 6:30pm.
- Scorecards Scoring Training: You will only need to attend only one of the training sessions but please keep both of the evenings free until you are allocated a Scorecards section, which will determine which session you need to attend: either Tuesday 13th or Thursday 15th August. You will need to be available from 5:30-7pm.
The commitment to 20 hours of volunteering, over a 4 week period, at your own pace.
Note: We will not accept current Councillors or Officers (Parish/Town councillors or staff are free to apply).
How it works

- You will be assigned 10 or more councils to score depending on your availability.
- You will be supported through online communication with other volunteers across the country.
- You will be supported on Slack so at any point you will be able to ask questions of CE UK staff and other volunteers.
- You will score those sections via our online scoring system. What you mark will be audited to ensure the system is fair and accurate.

Pharmacy Research UK (PRUK) is a small charity that funds pharmacy research in the UK. We fund research to help pharmacy professionals do research projects that can improve the public services and patient health. Our research funding helps:
- Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians develop research skills that will improve patient care in the future;
- Find out how we can deliver services better and make sure that pharmacy works well for patients;
- Enter into partnerships to increase the value and impact of pharmacy research;
- Promoting research to highlight the important role of pharmacy and pharmacy professionals in healthcare.
We are working with other key organisations to increase research funding opportunities for pharmacy professionals, including Diabetes UK, Kidney Research UK and the National Institute for Health and Care Research.
The Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) advises the Board of Trustees about grant funding, as well as the areas which need more research. The panel also makes sure that the research we fund is fairly assessed and will improve care for patients and their families.
We are seeking to initially appoint two scientific members to the Scientific Advisory Panel. Successful applicants would be invited to serve a three year term, with an option to renew for a further three years.
We are looking for scientific members with expertise in a range of methodological or healthcare disciplines. We especially welcome applications from those experienced in the use of qualitative research methods or those who are from disciplines outside of pharmacy practice, including digital health.
As we look to raise our profile as the principal funder of early-career research pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy researchers, this is an exciting time to get involved with us.
The responsibilities of the scientific post-holders include:
- Providing advice and input where necessary on PRUK’s research priorities, developments in the research landscape and best practice in our research policies and procedures;
- Contributing to discussions on the research strategy and approach taken to increase the scope of opportunity for pharmacists to engage in research;
- Advising and supporting the PRUK staff team in monitoring our portfolio of projects;
- Supporting the development of clear guidelines to establish measurable reporting procedures for research;
- Supporting the application review process by undertaking peer review of applications and assisting in sourcing peer reviewers.

- Experienced researcher with substantive grant income and a good publication track record commensurate to stage of career;
- Experienced in peer reviewing proposals for grant funding;
- Educated as a health services researcher to post-doctoral level, working in a relevant healthcare discipline with strong methodological expertise (expertise in qualitative methods are preferred) or with relevant cross-disciplinary experience in pharmacy research;
- Experience of working with other research funding panels (desirable).
We also want to ensure that our board is representative of the community we serve and so encourage applications from those with culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds. We also welcome applications across the UK, particularly Wales.
The panel currently meets twice a year online. There is the potential to meet in-person when needed (in London). There will be some preparatory work in the lead-up to the meetings, such as reviewing applications for funding. Therefore, members need to plan for work prior to the meetings and all members should be available, via email, outside of the meeting to receive relevant paperwork.

Why am I needed?
Community is at the heart of everything that we do at Tenovus Cancer Care to help those affected by cancer. Our aim is simple – to deliver a vision where fewer people get cancer and those that do receive equal access to excellent treatment. However, we can’t do this without your help. Our shops in local communities are crucial to us raising vital funds. So, we’d like you to volunteer your time and commitment to help us make a difference. We need you to help value our interesting donations in our shops to help turn them into cash.
What will I be doing?
Researching interesting items online on sites such as eBay, Amazon and Abe Books to value them for sale in the shop
Enlisting help from local auction houses when needed
Working together with the shop team to identify and price high value items
Speaking with customers, making them welcome and answering queries
Promoting awareness of the charity and the services that we provide.
What skills do I need?
It’d be great if you have some knowledge of or interest in vintage items, know what to look out for with brands, pottery marks, book publishing dates etc.
A really keen eye for detail and ability to cross reference items across a number of websites to provide the most realistic valuation
Ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team
Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team and customers.
Ability to use computer for research
Whist this role will be mainly sitting at a computer desk, you may need to handle bags and donations from the public and there may be stairs to climb depending on which shop you are based in. If you have any concerns about this, please speak with the Shop Manager when expressing your interest in volunteering.
How much time do I need to commit?
We’d need you to give around three hours per week if you can with the possibility to do more if you’d like to. However, we appreciate any time you’d like to give; please let us know this on your application form.
What support will I be given?
Before starting with Tenovus Cancer Care, we ask that you do try a small number of hours in the shop so we can both see how the role may suit you. The amount of hours can be decided between you and the Shop Manager.
Following that the Shop Manager and team will be on hand to run you through the basics of helping in a shop in your first few days and they’ll always be on hand after that.

Overview
Charity Purpose
- Raise funds for research into the cause, prevention and management of dementia.
- Allocate funding to university research project meeting the highest academics standards.
- Raising awareness of dementia.
Objective
- Holds the Executive team and the Board to account to:
- remain focussed solely on the BRACE stated purpose
- remain compliant with all English and Welsh laws and the regulations of the Charity Commission. - Support the Chief Executive in ensuring both the Board members and Executive team work closely together to achieve the agreed strategic objectives.
- Act (in partnership with the Chief Executive) as an ambassador and the public face of BRACE.
Charity Structure
- BRACE the charity has a sole Trustee “BRACE Trustee Limited”. All members of the Board are Directors of BRACE Trustee Limited and act as Trustees of BRACE. There are up to 15 directors of BRACE Trustee Limited who for reasons of clarity are called Trustees.
- The Chair and Trustees are usually appointed for a fixed term of 4 years which can be renewed once, enabling Trustees to serve for a maximum continuous term of 8 years.
Meetings
- Board meetings are held 4 times a year plus 1 awayday. Each meeting is +/- 4 hours.
- There are currently 3 sub-committees of the Board (Scientific Advisory Committee [SAC], Finance and HR). The 3 sub-committees meet no more than one month before the board meetings either in person or on Zoom. SAC reviews applications for grants and makes recommendations to the Board for approval.
- Board Meetings are generally held in person in the Bristol area, online or hybrid meetings are not encouraged but can be facilitated.
