Sustainability Board Member
At the Eco Centre our mission is to empower people to live and work sustainably. We inform, inspire and enable people to take action on climate change and the environment.
What we do
Our focus is on practical help so people can reduce carbon, live sustainably and combat climate change.
We’ve developed an innovative approach to helping people make that transition to sustainable living that has the potential of being scaled up and used nationwide – putting us on the road to zero carbon. We’re working closely with communities to pilot and develop the scheme.
In the next 12 months we planning an events programme to engage inspire the public and businesses, and for collaboration and co-creation for climate action innovation.
The next step will be a regional sustainability hub – a visitor attraction with hands-on activities. A go-to destination, training facility, and events/exhibition space – and a resource base for outreach and schools’ programmes.
How you can help
As Sustainability Board Member, you’ll lead the research and development of our sustainability resources and play a key role in developing initiatives.
Your input in the development of innovative information and engagement programmes, and tools, that can have a major impact on the drive to Zero Carbon, will be vital.
Key information:
Responsible to: The board and membership
Working Location: Generally remote working but the ability to help occasionally at events in the South West is preferable.
Location Requirements: Preferably living or working in the South West. Regulations permit only a limited no. of directors from outside the area of benefit.
Hours: Minimum of 6-8 hours a month. Flexible

What you’ll be doing
As a hands-on board member, you’ll:
- Ensure that our information resources are accurate, engaging and informative
- Work with others to ensure that our public engagement programmes are effective.
- Research and develop new resources and approaches for public and business sector initiatives
- Lead the research and development of an information base of household sustainability measures for the Climate Action Plan programme, and the development of interactive tools.
- Research and develop community/collective actions to support the move to sustainable living and working
- Lead on quantifying and evaluating the effectiveness of measures and our initiatives – particularly the impact of consumer choice and behavioural change initiatives
- Be joining newly enlarged team, steering and developing the Eco Centre, helping it to realise its ambition of a Sustainability Centre for the South West.
- Play an important part in developing strategy and ensuring the organisation is well run and able to deliver, and step up, its impact on climate change and sustainability.
- Contribute to the day-to day running of the organisation and/or its operations.

Following the success of the first-ever Council Climate Action Scorecards last year, Climate Emergency UK is looking to create the second edition of the Action Scorecards. Analysing council climate action only becomes valuable if you track the progress that has been made. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers to assist us in managing the Freedom of Information (FOI) requests we are sending to councils to answer some of the Scorecard questions.
Why are we doing this?
We’re in a climate crisis, and local councils have the power and influence over around 30% of emissions in their local area. Councils are uniquely placed to make a real impact on emissions within their area. But we know that councils can be taking more effective action as the average score in the 2023 Action Scorecards was only 32%. The Scorecards are a campaigning tool that residents can use to hold their council to account on their climate action, and lobby for specific, targeted change. We have also found evidence of 1 in 5 councils using and referencing the Scorecards in committee meetings, reports or in their own press releases and organisations across the sector are utilising the data from the Scorecards as well. Finally, this UK wide assessment will demonstrate where the UK and devolved governments need to provide more support to local authorities in order for them to take even further action.
How can you help?
We need at least 200 volunteers to pull this project off! We are sending councils a small number of FOI requests in order to answer some of the Scorecard questions. We have already written the FOI requests, and we need volunteers to manage the FOI request responses from all 400 councils and input their answers into our Scorecards.
What experience do I need?
We will provide training so you don’t need any experience. If you have previous experience of sending FOI requests using WhatDoTheyKnow or reading responses to FOI requests that would be useful but not necessary in order to apply.
What will I gain?
This is a great opportunity if you want to work with FOI/EIR requests in the future. As you’ll be processing a variety of FOI requests from different council types across the UK, you will gain a deep understanding of the FOI request process and strengthen your analytical skills as you read and interpret the responses. By helping with this project you will be making a real contribution to the fight against the climate crisis.
What we need from you
You will need to be available to attend the following sessions:

Volunteer induction
You will only need to attend an induction session on either Tuesday 17th or Thursday 19th September. -
FOI Training
You will only need to attend the training session on Thursday 26th September. You will need to be available from 5:30-7:30pm.
Scorecard FOI requests volunteers will be carrying out crucial tasks to manage the thousands of FOI responses we will be managing. Using WhatDoTheyKnow you will be logging whether a council has responded to an FOI request and extracting the answers to create a data set of answers that will be used to mark councils in the Scorecards. Every volunteer will be trained and supported to manage the FOI responses.
Each FOI request will take between 10-30 minutes to classify and extract responses and the more you do, the quicker you will be. This can be done flexibly according to your scheduling needs. Our core FOI volunteers should be able to give 10 hours per week for 5 weeks between 26th September and 21st October. You will need access to a laptop or computer with good internet for this volunteer position in order to access WhatDoTheyKnow.
Note: We will not accept current Councillors or Officers (Parish/Town councillors/officers are free to apply).
How it works

You will receive training on how to use WhatDoTheyKnow and manage the FOI responses.

You will use WhatDoTheyKnow Projects to first classify and then extract information from FOI requests as we receive responses from councils across the country.

You will be supported through online communication with other volunteers across the country.

You will be supported on Slack so at any point you will be able to ask questions of CE UK staff and other volunteers. There will also be an optional weekly FOI team co-working session, where you can work with CE UK staff and other volunteers, ask questions and get to know the other volunteers.

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate individual to join our team as a Volunteer for Community Events. In this role, you will have the opportunity to make a positive impact by attending and facilitating community events for LGBTQIA+ Muslim groups in Leeds.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting the Community Trustee in researching and planning events for the hub in Leeds
- Communicate with members on our Discord channel to coordinate attendance and activities
- Liaising with speakers, performers, and workshop facilitators to ensure their needs are met and their contributions align with the goals and values of the community.
- Setting up and taking down meeting rooms including workshop materials, refreshments and other ops as required
- Engaging with attendees, volunteers, and stakeholders during events to ensure a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
- Recording attendance collect feedback and evaluate the success of each event, making recommendations for improvement.
- Assisting workshop leaders and Trustees in delivering activities
- Assisting with special projects and initiatives as directed by the Trustees
This role requires travel to/from the Leeds Hub location with travel reimbursement capped at £20.
How much commitment is required?
We are flexible around your schedule. However, the following commitments are in place for volunteers:
- Attend monthly meetings to update on tasks, progress etc.
- Aim to attend all other planning meetings as necessary
- Attend all Hidayah Hub events in your respective region
- Attend other Hidayah events where geographically possible
- Add to and maintain the administration of our file-sharing system ‘Google Drive’ to ensure it’s up to date with clear records, templates and forms
- Check and respond to emails in a timely manner
- Contribute to the communications group (via Discord) and stay up to date with Hidayah developments
- Keep up to date with Hidayah communication and organisational developments

For the past year we have worked closely with our Interim Managing Director and our members, Branches, Special Interest Groups and Business Groups to develop our new strategy - Working together to prevent infection.
The aim of the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) is to inform, promote and sustain evidence-based infection prevention policy and practice to create a health and care system where no person's health and wellbeing is harmed by preventable infection.
Our broad membership includes infection control practitioners, scientists, clinicians and industry experts and we support our members via branches across the UK and Ireland. We deliver educational opportunities to support best practice in infection prevention and control through an annual conference, study days, our academic journal, and research activity. We support our members with a competency framework and credentialing system, international engagement opportunities and product evaluation services for industry.
The Infection Prevention Society has an independent Board of Trustees who are responsible for governance and risk management functions of the society. These include developing long-term strategy, assuring financial stability and compliance with governing documents, and evaluating performance. The Board works with the Management Executive Group (MEG) who are responsible for leading and managing the business activity of the Society.
Who we are looking for?
Our new Treasurer and trustee must be:
· Financially competent
· Willing to work with our staff team in managing the finances of the charity
· Willing to assist and support the IPS CEO and Audit and Finance Committee in monitoring the financial performance of the charity
As a Trustee you will be able to contribute to the work of the society by:
· Shaping the strategic direction
· Making decisions that enhance its influence
· Assuring good governance of the Society
We are looking for applicants who really want to make a positive impact on our organisation. They should have strategic vision and good judgement, an ability to think creatively, and willingness to contribute opinions and ideas. A willingness to challenge is also desirable. An understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship is desirable although Trustees induction and training would be available. Previous experience as a Trustee is also desirable but not essential. Although the trustee positions are unpaid, reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. The Board of Trustees hold a minimum of four meetings per year and trustees are also expected to attend the Annual General meeting which is held in the autumn.
The Audit and Finance Committee hold a minimum of four meetings per year. It is anticipated that where possible these meetings will be held virtually.

in its development and seeks new Trustees to help forge ahead.
As a member of the Board of Trustees you will be responsible for the overall direction, vision and
strategy of the Foundation for Paediatric Osteopathy and its clinical arm, the Osteopathic Centre for
Children. We are looking for candidates who can bring ideas, experience and good judgement to help
set our objectives, as well as an ability and enthusiasm to help the organisation take on future
challenges.

About We Are Family
We Are Family is an extraordinary peer support community for adopters and prospective adopters. We’re there for parents throughout their adoption journey. Online and in person, our parents’ groups, events, resources, podcasts and talks offer mutual support, information and inspiration to adopters and those considering adoption. We currently operate across Greater London and the Home Counties, with ambitions to scale nationally over the coming years.

The Role
We are looking for new trustees to strengthen and enhance our board. The key responsibilities of the role include, governance, overseeing policy and direction, financial oversight and assisting with the leadership and general promotion of We Are Family to support the organisation’s Vision, Mission, Values and needs.
This is a voluntary opportunity with associated Trustee expenses - such as travel / childcare - covered by We Are Family. Trustees can be based anywhere in the UK.
Commitment
Trustee capacity to devote the time needed for the following is essential:

4 Board meetings per year
-
2 Board away days per year (on a Saturday)

Membership of at least one sub-committee (which also meet 4 times a year)
We estimate 8-10 hours for the charity per month. The duration of membership for a new Board member is for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of appointment for a further three year term.
Skills and Experience
All applicants should be able to demonstrate the following:

Be able to show high levels of professionalism and an ability to work collaboratively with others, including Trustees, our core team and the wider Volunteer network at We Are Family

Be well-organised, with good written and verbal communication skills.

Previous board/trustee experience is not necessary and we welcome applications from all ages and backgrounds. A thorough induction, and further trustee training as appropriate, can be provided.
We are particularly interested candidates with the following experience:

Working as a professional with or in the adoption sector,

Advocacy and/or research work;

Finance/charity finance
-
Leadership within a charity
-
Education
-
Legal.
Although many of our current trustees are adopters themselves, we are also keen to recruit suitably qualified people who are not, but who can demonstrate a commitment to the values and mission of We Are Family.
One of the great strengths of We Are Family is that we are volunteer and member driven, and we represent a diverse community of adoptive parents. We particularly welcome trustees from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds to ensure that the board can benefit from this diversity of experience. We would also welcome single adopters to the board.
