Job description

A bit about us

We are looking for a new Deputy Centre Manager at our Newport Animal Centre.

  • Working hours: 35 hours per week on a shift basis including bank holidays and weekends.
  • This is a site based role with the expectation that the successful candidate will be available for stand-by night cover 14 out of 28 days.
  • Fixed-term contract for 20 months.

The RSPCA Newport Animal Centre, located in Newport, South Wales, is a vital hub for caring for a variety of domestic animals. Situated conveniently near the M4, the centre plays a crucial role in the welfare of animals in the region. Despite being a smaller facility, it provides compassionate care for dogs and cats. The dedicated staff at the centre work tirelessly to ensure the well-being and happiness of these animals while they await their forever homes.

Are you ready to be part of our journey and make a difference?

Please note this advert may close earlier than the advertised date if we receive a large volume of applications.

What a day might look like for you

We've added a short summary of what a typical day might look like:

  1. Animal Welfare:. Ensuring adherence to animal welfare standards and procedures for intake, assessment and rehoming.
  2. Health and Safety: Overseeing the health and safety of staff, volunteers, and the public, conducting inductions, and addressing safety incidents.
  3. HR and Recruitment: Recruitment, training and supervision of staff including implementing HR policies and ensuring staff are supported through regular evaluations and personal development plans.
  4. Administrative Duties: Managing paperwork, records, and external correspondence as well as the security and maintenance of equipment and facilities.
  5. Fundraising and Publicity: Collaborating with the Centre Manager to promote fundraising opportunities and engage with the media.
  6. Fostering Management: Recruiting and managing fosterers and their associated responsibilities

What makes a great Deputy Manager?

Essential

  • GCSE Maths and English or equivalent.
  • Full manual driving licence (subject to reasonable adjustments).
  • Animal handling and husbandry experience.
  • People/line management experience.
  • Conflict management experience.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work under pressure.

Desirable

  • NVQ Diploma level 2 or equivalent or equivalent qualification in animal care
  • Health and safety qualification e.g. IOSH certificate or diploma

Successful candidates for certain RSPCA roles may need to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK  as we are unable to sponsor visas.

Final note from us & good luck with your application!

We are really lucky that some of our roles attract a high level of interest, and for this reason we review applications as they are received. Unfortunately on some occasions this means roles may close earlier than advertised, so early submissions are highly recommended.

We do try to give feedback where we can but sometimes, due to receiving high levels of applications, this may not always be possible

We recognise that a diverse and inclusive workforce is essential to achieving our core mission. For this reason we actively encourage a wide diversity of applications, in particular from members of minority ethnic groups, and people with disabilities, as these candidates are currently under-represented at the RSPCA.
