Independent Age is the national charity focused on improving the lives of people facing financial hardship in later life. We believe no one should face financial hardship in later life. Our Helpline and expert advisers offer free, practical support to older people without enough money to live on. Through our grants programme, we support hundreds of local organisations working with older people across the UK.

Responsibilities and Person Specification:

The Team Administrator supports our in-house Studio team with the administration and delivery of our content through the design, print and digital processes.

You will have excellent administrative, communication and organisational skills. You will have the ability to work under pressure to prioritise, deliver, manage, and coordinate several projects and activities simultaneously to tight timescales. You should also understand design and production best practice, processes and techniques across both online and offline formats.

We are looking for a Graphic Designer (maternity cover).

We’re looking for a mid-weight Graphic Designer to work in-house to create artwork for marketing and communications campaigns across a wide range of media, including print, digital, animation, and video. Working under the direction of the Senior Graphic Designer and within the Communications and Engagement team, the Graphic Designer will work across a range of different projects supporting the priorities of the charity.

This is a 6 months’ full time maternity cover role. This role is also a hybrid working role, where 40% of the role will be on campus based.

At the Islington Centre for Refugees and migrants, we welcome people who have been displaced from their countries of origin, wherever they have come from, whatever has happened in their lives. Our mission is to offer people the emotional support, practical tools and sense of community they need to be happy and have a decent quality of life in the UK. We are a small, growing charity, founded in 1997, with an expenditure budget of roughly £570,000 for the year ahead. This year we worked with 200 people offering compassionate, long term and holistic support including: a warm welcoming Centre in Islington; an Online School teaching English and offering activities to promote wellbeing; digital inclusion; grants to people in destitution and our Support Service which offers advocacy and advice to people on accessing housing, healthcare and legal advice. 

About the role: 

The successful applicant will work alongside our Trustees, our CEO and our existing Head of Fundraising and Communications in a jobshare to meet challenging fundraising targets. You will be joining us at an exciting time of development, as we open at our third site in Islington, welcome new members of staff to our team and begin work on a new strategy for 2025-2028. We have a strong track record of grant fundraising and seek someone who can support us to diversify our income, develop a fundraising strategy with a variety of income streams and bring experience and ideas to raise our profile. You will be part of a small and highly committed fundraising team of three including the existing Head of Fundraising and Communications, our Fundraising Officer and yourself. This role will focus on corporate, community, and major donor stewardship. Our work is hybrid and the role requires working both at the Centre in Islington and from home. Chance to Shine is an independent children’s charity. We change young people’s lives through cricket giving them the opportunity to play, learn and develop through the sport. We keep them physically active, teach them vital skills like teamwork, communication and leadership. And above all, they have fun.

Since 2005 our Chance to Shine Schools programme has helped reverse the decline of cricket in state schools with millions of boys and girls in over 13,000 state schools playing and learning through cricket. Chance to Shine Street supports young people in under-served communities to access and benefit from cricket in a free, inclusive, fun and fast-paced tape ball environment.

Purpose of the Role

A key part of Chance to Shine’s Communications department, this role will have help to drive awareness of the charity – communicating our mission, vision and messages to key audiences.

Principal Responsibilities

The Communications Officer will support include the following areas:

• To offer support on a range of diverse projects and events to increase the profile and awareness of Chance to Shine
• To help with the planning, execution and analysis of communications and marketing campaigns throughout the year
• To help manage the Chance to Shine brand internally and externally – including both written and visual brand guidelines
• Supporting the Director of Communications and Digital and the Fundraising team with the activation of corporate and funding partners
• Assisting with media liaison and monitoring including but not limited to:

Ø  Managing the media contacts database

Ø  Pitching stories to local print, online and broadcast media

•  To lead the charity’s application process for internal and external awards

Who we are looking for

Our Communications Services team is seeking a talented Communications Officer, Social Media and Digital, with a background in sustainable development, science or health communications. The successful applicant will be educated to degree level with at least a 2:1 or 1st class honours degree.

You will need to be creative with the ability to produce social media campaigns, digital content and videos, and lead the development of engaging websites to tell our clients’ stories. Plus, you’ll need to be highly organised and able to juggle multiple tasks to coordinate and deliver a wide range of engaging communications materials. You should also be open to travel, as the role could require you to visit projects in Africa or Asia.

What you will do

You’ll lead our social media and digital services for international development and research organisations around the world, as well as coordinating and providing advice on a range of other communications projects – covering topics such as climate change, health, poverty reduction, social equity, agriculture, water resources management, and green cities. You’ll need to think strategically and creatively, respond effectively to emerging trends, and help our team develop and grow.

Your role will include:

• Leading social media and digital communications services: you will conceptualise, coordinate and deliver social media campaigns, videos, websites, newsletters and other digital products for our clients – leading innovative content strategies that drive engagement.
• Content creation: you will create social media content and assets, graphics, videos and animations. You will also develop design templates and mock-ups, format presentations and Microsoft Word documents, produce event materials and make website updates.
• Project management: you will be the main point of contact for specific clients and projects, gathering requests for new products and services, and coordinating content development and graphic design work with other team members to ensure that projects are delivered efficiently and effectively. This may lead to overseas trips for some clients.
• Managing Scriptoria’s social media and website: you will lead Scriptoria’s external social media marketing and ensure our website and digital landscape remains dynamic and up to date. You will test and advise the team on new tools or programs.
• Business development as part of the team: you will explain our work to potential new clients, showcase our many successful projects, increase the amount of digital work flowing into the company, and so ensure that Scriptoria’s Communications team moves from strength to strength.

Our staff have the flexibility to work wholly or partly from home or from our office in Tooting, South-West London, during regular operational hours (08:30–17:30; 40 hours/week). If working from home, staff must have a working environment suitable for holding video-call meetings with clients. Key skills and experience required

1. A 2:1 or 1st class honours degree in a subject area relevant to our work. A postgraduate qualification would be an advantage.
2. A minimum of five years’ work experience in a communications role.
3. Extensive knowledge and use of social media channels (X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram etc.), marketing platforms (e.g. for newsletters) and management tools (e.g. Hootsuite).
4. Experience using a range of tools to create digital communications materials (e.g. Canva and video editing software; Illustrator and Premier Pro would be an advantage) and content management systems (e.g. WordPress).
5. Understanding of the digital landscape, emerging trends, tools and best practices in social media and digital communications (including SEO, UI, UX, Information Architecture).
6. Demonstrated experience developing and implementing social media, digital and campaign strategies, and using reporting and analytics tools – with proven success in driving engagement and followers.
7. Strong creative flair with a strong understanding of best-practice design principles.
8. Strong project management skills and the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and cope flexibly with a range of jobs to meet (and exceed) client expectations.
9. Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills, with strong attention to detail.
