British Society for Rheumatology (BSR) is a membership organisation that brings together expertise from across the rheumatology profession, harnessing a wide variety of experience and skills to ensure we’re supporting our members to the very best of our combined ability. Our mission is to support members to deliver the best care at all stages of the rheumatology care pathway, focusing on communication, transparency and collaboration.

Rheumatology Advances in Practice (RAP) is a fully Open Access journal that publishes quantitative and qualitative research on all areas of rheumatology and musculoskeletal practice. The Editor-in-Chief plays a key role in providing leadership, vision and strategy.

Job Purpose
 
The Editor-in-Chief will be appointed by BSR and the term of appointment will be for a five-year period. The Editor-in-Chief plays a key role in providing leadership, vision and strategy of the journal.

The Editor-in-Chief for Rheumatology Advances in Practice (RAP) will work with BSR to develop and produce a high-quality journal as well as establish its strategic direction. They will be involved in keeping the BSR Board of Trustees and RAP Editorial Board as well as leading the social media presence of the journal. 
 
The Editor-in-Chief will have a general responsibility to the broader rheumatology, paediatric, primary care and allied health community in communicating clinical and scientific advances and standards, to promote their needs and aspirations by commissioning content and planning Special Issues that will enhance the field of research, care and support for these communities. 
 
The Editor-in-Chief will work with the Society and Publisher to ensure that it continues to meet its objectives and set strategic goals for the journal.  

The general strategic aims and objectives of the journal are:  

• Ensure robust ethical standards and high-quality peer review
• Grow quality and number of submissions and publications yearly
• Ensure international recognition and reach of this journal by publishing high quality scientific and clinical research from across the world, and maintaining an engaged international Editorial Board

The journal is an open access, go to resource for the rheumatology community, with a scope that encompasses the wide range of disciplines involved in the field. We recently received an impressive first impact factor of 3.1 and we are excited to continue to grow the presence of the journal internationally. As the journal is fully online and open access, we have exciting opportunities to provide a multitude of publishing services for our authors, in line with the industry standards and experimenting with new ways of publishing. We listen to the voice of the authors, readers, reviewers and board members to understand their publishing needs and are excited to trial new projects. For example, we recently launched a new article type called an ‘Atlas Review’ with a unique offer of unlimited figures, allowing authors to illustrate their important discussions and not limiting the capabilities via text exclusively.

Quality and ethical standards
The Editor-in-Chief will ensure an appropriate balance of good quality articles, so the journal addresses the needs of the multidisciplinary rheumatology community. The Editor-in-Chief will see that the journal maintains the highest ethical and moral standards. The journal must be seen to be fair and unbiased towards individuals and provides a comprehensive and balanced view of the specialty. The journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and committed to the highest ethical standards in journal publishing.

Conference attendance
The BSR, EULAR and ACR conferences provide an excellent opportunity to network with current and prospective authors, reviewers and Editorial Board members, as well as to commission new content for the journal and to provide social media updates. Conferences can also be used to arrange podcast and video interviews with authors, Board Members and colleagues. Delegate tickets to EULAR, the BSR Annual Conference and ACR will be covered by the British Society for Rheumatology and travel and hotel expenses will be covered as outlined in the budget.

Editorial support to the Editor-in-Chief
The Editor-in-Chief will receive day-to-day support for processing papers and managing peer review from the BSR in-house Editorial Office team, as well as support from contacts at Oxford University Press. Co-Editors, Associate Editors and wider Editorial Board also provide support and guidance to the Editor-in-Chief.  

The relationship with the British Society for Rheumatology 
The day-to-day contact with the BSR will be through the Editorial Office; however, the Editor-in-Chief will have several relationships as follows: 

• BSR Journal Committee

The BSR Journal Committee will review and supply any feedback about overall advice given by the Editorial Board on the content, quality, standards, promotion, and performance of the journal to the Editor-in-Chief. The Journal committee is responsible for overseeing and approving the finances, scope and policies of Rheumatology Advances in Practice. The committee ensure actions decided upon further the work of the Journal and its development within the Journal’s aims and scope. 

• BSR Board of Trustees, CEO and Senior Management Team

Advised by the BSR Senior Management Team, the BSR Board of Trustees approve the finances and strategy of the journal. Members of the BSR Senior Management Team attend the Journal Committee meetings. The Editor-in-Chief is asked to attend the BSR Board of Trustees on an ad hoc basis to provide an update on strategy and delivery.  

• Rheumatology Editor-in-Chief

There is a transfer of papers model in place, so the Editor-in-Chief will have opportunity to collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief of Rheumatology to ensure the right papers are directed to the right journals by understanding the scope nd criteria of each journal. The journals share a X and instagram pages and marketing and promotional campaigns can be co-ordinated.

• Oxford University Press 

OUP publish the journal on behalf of the BSR. OUP provides a full publishing experience with expert teams who advise and support on matters related to production, marketing and law, publishing ethics and strategy. The publisher, BSR and the EiC work closely to ensure the journal strategy is bespoke in order for Rheumatology Advances in Practice to maintain the current community, build the readership and authorship, and align with the visions and values of BSR. The Editor-in-Chief will meet OUP contacts at the Journal Committee Meeting and strategy planning meetings, as the publisher highly values the knowledge and experience of the Editor-in-Chief. Day to day communication will be via the Editorial Office to ensure smooth running of journal procedures.  

Main responsibilities

• Work towards and guide the 5-year strategy for the journal
• Set strategic goals with BSR and the publisher to apply for further indexing, and maintain or grow the Impact Factor
• Work with BSR, the publisher and Editorial Board to target and commission reviews, original articles and special issues, and curate a sponsored supplement timeline
• Ensure that the journal’s scope is international and is reflected in its content 
• Ensure the journal is produced to a high standard, and that it reflects the needs of the full spectrum of the rheumatology professional community
• Ensure rapid peer review with time to first decision within three weeks 
• Ensure the Editorial Board reflects not only the various subspecialties within rheumatology but also includes a global spread 
• Ensure that the journal is promoted online using a range of media to promote and raise awareness of the journal
• Participating in the digital offerings of the journal, such as hosting podcasts

Person Specification

1.  A PhD degree/ Doctor of Medicine, specialised in rheumatology, with a clinical science background and a strong understanding of recent trends and developments 
2.  Demonstrable experience in an editorial role including, reviewer, editorial board member, associate editor or guest editor
3.  Adaptability to new publishing systems and software. Experience with the system, ScholarOne, would be beneficial to the role but is not a requirement as training can be provided

The role of Charity Coordinator is a new one for FTWW. About the role:

Internation Mission to Jewish People (IMJP) is looking for an experienced Trust Fundraiser to join their Fundraising and Communications Team, focusing on Trusts and taking this key area to the next level.

International Mission to Jewish People has been at the cutting edge of mission to Jewish people since 1842. Their UK office is looking for an experienced Trust Fundraiser to secure significant income to support their vision to sustain and grow their  vital mission work.

IMJP already has a loyal support base and they’re looking for someone to build on this and help grow their income and generate new and higher value funds as well as develop and nurture their current relationships with trusts.

This is an exciting time to join the fundraising and communications team, and with a new Director of Fundraising and Communications who started last year, they have a new fundraising strategy and direction that will help guide IMJP get to the next level with Trusts and Foundation grants.

As the new Trust Fundraiser you will have the opportunity to make the most of this fresh direction in order to grow and develop the portfolio!

About you:

You’ll be an skilled fundraiser bringing your previous experience in trusts or corporate fundraising with a proven track record of successful funding applications and bringing in significant income.

Using your excellent communication and relationship building skills you will be able to develop and maintain effective relationships with key trusts and grant making bodies in order to develop and sustain current relationships as well as progress and nurture new ones and secure more high level funding applications (£2 - £2.5k plus).

You’ll be proactive and self motivated, able to plan ahead and work to deadlines, using your attention to detail and current knowledge of regulations and fundraising best practise to be successful in your role. Your experience in writing tailored and high quality applications will be key and an asset to the team!

You'll bring your previous experience as a trust fundraiser to hit the ground running and pick up the current portfolio whilst also exploring and researching new avenues for trusts and grant application potential that will leverage a range of opportunities available.

The Baobab Centre is a non-residential therapeutic community that supports young asylum seekers and refugees who have experienced human rights abuses and have sought asylum in the UK as unaccompanied minors. Our two focus areas are rehabilitation and justice.

This is a unique oppertunity for a passionate and experienced fundraiser to progress further in their career, with the freedom to creatively enhance and develop the fundraising strategy of an impactful community-based charity.

As Senior Fundraising Lead you will be Baobab’s key fundraiser and a self-starter with experience of working in a small or medium sized charity. You will lead on the development of fundraising at Baobab, exploring new avenues for funding, as well as nurturing and growing existing fundraising relationships. You will be responsible for strategising and carrying out a successful program of fundraising from small, medium and large charitable trusts and foundations to an agreed annual fundraising target. Mental Health:  All of the young people Baobab supports suffer significant mental health and developmental difficulties and many function in an unstable and more immature way than their chronological age. Due to their experiences it takes time to gain trust from the young people in our community. As a core member of our team, you will understand the impact of specific human rights abuses on the development of children and young people in exile and their individual experiences of loss, trauma and grief on their mental health and well-being. 

Baobab’s Model: Please read the accompanying ‘Baobab Clincial Context and Model’ document for a detailed introduction. It often takes a significant amount of time to understand Baobab’s model of working, which aims for rehabilitation and justice through attending to both the internal and external world of each young. It is important that you strive to have an insight to the experiences of both the internal and external factors impacting on the lives of unaccompanied young people attending our centre. It is also important that you understand the ways in which UK society and policy impacts on young asylum seekers (including invisibility, marginalisation, discrimination, and the fact of waiting in uncertainty for a long time).

The Food Chain exists to ensure people living with HIV in London can access the nutrition they need to get well, stay well and lead healthy, independent lives. We deliver meals, groceries and formula milk, run cookery and nutrition classes, and hold twice-weekly communal meals for some of the most vulnerable and isolated people living with HIV in London. 

We are the only HIV Nutrition specialist charity in the UK: we exist at the intersection between HIV, food poverty and social isolation. Everyone accessing our services is referred by a health or social care professional who has identified that they are experiencing crisis. Each person receives a personalised Dietetic Assessment from one of our HIV Specialist Dietitians, designed specifically to meet their needs. By offering a tailored package of support, at the appropriate time, we help people to lead healthy, independent lives.

The Director of Income Generation & Partnerships, along with the Director of Services & Development, lead the organisation's small staff team to deliver vital services to an average of 500 people every year. The Director of Income Generation is a vital link in The Food Chain, ensuring income is secured to enable the delivery and sustainability of all our services and activities, and setting the organisation’s strategic direction for the achievement of our charitable purpose.

Since we were formed on Christmas Day 1988, The Food Chain has delivered food services to people living with HIV every week since. We were founded by volunteers, and are proud that volunteers are still key to the deliver of our charitable services. The Food Chain family is vast - it’s not at all uncommon for us to be out fundraising and someone run up to us with a shout of “Food Chain! I volunteered for you in 1994!” 

Position: Director of Income Generation & Partnerships

Responsible to: Board of Trustees

Location: Flexible and remote working is offered to all staff. We have an office in Caledonian Road, London, and we deliver some services in Stepney Green. We envisage this role being hybrid. 

Hours: 37.5 hours per week (full-time), core hours of 9.00am–5.30pm but flexible working hours will be considered. 

Salary: £42,436 per annum

Key Activities & Accountabilities

Strategic Management

• Contribute to the development of The Food Chain’s strategic and operational plans and ensure income is secured for their effective delivery in line with all relevant legislation, best practice and The Food Chain’s values

• Work collaboratively to develop this role as the needs of the organisation and its services users change over time

• As part of the Charity’s Senior Management Team (SMT), lead in the overall day-to-day running of the charity, including directly reporting to and attending meetings of the Management Committee

• Represent The Food Chain in public, both within the sector and externally

• Identify and manage financial risks

Income generation and development

• Research, prepare and submit applications for core and project funding to Charitable Trusts and Foundations, corporate bodies and other partners as required to meet the charity’s core purpose 

• Maintain and develop positive relationships with existing Trust funders ,donors and other supporters of The Food Chain as appropriate 

• Ensure that record keeping relating to all fundraising activity is accurate, up to date and timely, using Salesforce CRM 

• Ensure that all necessary reporting to all funders is of a high quality and submitted in a timely manner.

• Maintain a realistic pipeline of existing and potential applications for all funding streams

• Develop and implement fundraising initiatives to increase support from, and enhance our profile with all potential donors, including corporate partners and individuals

• Research potential commercial partners and provide a planned approached to pursuing and executing a full offer of fundraising opportunities to engage corporates. 

• To provide support to the trustee lead Corporate and Individual donors fundraising group

Financial management

• Lead on the day-to-day management of all financial operations, including forecasting and the annual planning and budgeting process, working closely with the SMT and Trustees 

• Provide sound financial advice to the SMT and Trustees also assisting with strategic planning, forecasting, projections and service models for the charity and any trading activities. 

• Ensure that The Food Chain makes the most of financial opportunities and works with challenges effectively as they arise in order to meet priorities and fulfil our charitable purpose

• Monitor cash flow forecasts and the budget against actuals and bring any major variations in budget expenditure for discussion to SMT and the Operations Working Group in a timely manner

• In liaison with our external provider, prepare monthly I & E reports, and quarterly management accounts for the SMT and Board of Trustees

• Write, review and update finance policies and procedures as and when required

• Lead on the annual audit process and ensure it is carried out effectively and in a timely manner

• Provide line management of the financial administrator role

• Supervise and review all accounting records processed by financial administrator 

• Authorise the payment of suppliers on a monthly basis and as needed

• To support the Director of Services in their management of the monthly payroll and pension submissions and carry out administration as needed

Communications and external relationships

• Develop, as appropriate, The Food Chain’s public profile, and influence and foster good relationships through liaison with statutory, voluntary and private bodies, Food Chain members, volunteers, patrons, supporters and the public.

We currently have a vacancy in our Finance Team to support the Chief Executive managing the charity’s finances.  

Main duties would include: 

To: 

• manage the Finance team and work with the senior management team to ensure that we provide support for carers while operating according to Charities Commission guidelines

• review current finance support systems considering developments in IT making recommendations to the Senior Management Team and Board of Trustees

• ensure appropriate risk management techniques and financial controls are embedded throughout the charity at strategic and operational levels

• be responsible for the development and maintenance of procedures and systems to support the effective control and expenditure of financial resources

• support the Chief Executive, Treasurer and staff team on financial matters providing regular reports on income and expenditure including quarterly management accounts.

As Legal Manager, Legal Service for Independent Media, you will provide dedicated project leadership to continue to pilot the operationalization and implementation of a legal offering to support journalists and independent newsrooms, whose safety and independence are under threat.

You will report to TrustLaw’s Head of Special Projects, while working closely with the TrustLaw and the Media Freedom teams. You will manage one Legal Officer, Media Freedom.

This is a fixed-term 12-month contract based in London.

About the Role:

As our Legal Manager, Legal Service for Independent Media, you will:

• Map evolving trends and legal threats for journalists, media freedom NGOs and independent media outlets and identify the most pressing legal gaps and needs

• Build excellent relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external, including expanding our network of expert NGOs and legal teams working in the media, journalism and media freedom space

• Refine the operating model for the media-legal offering based on feedback received, including intake process, eligibility requirements, project flow, and impact monitoring mechanisms

• Work closely with our Media Freedom and Programmes team to ensure alignment and integration of the media-legal offering within the Foundation's existing media freedom work, and to identify other innovative programming, products and approaches that best leverage the Foundation’s assets

• Scope, and support the management of pro bono or low bono legal requests and cross-border research projects that address critical needs of journalists, media freedom NGOs and independent media outlets

• Scope and oversee the development of tools, resources, trainings and other content on key legal issues of relevance to journalists and independent media outlets to address threats to their safety and independence and build resilience

• Deliver and/or coordinate delivery of trainings, legal health checks and events for media freedom NGOs, journalists and/or media houses, often in partnership with the programming teams

• Support the development and implementation of a communications, engagement and outreach plan, as needed, in collaboration with the Foundation’s Communications, Social and Media Freedom teams

• Support bid development and partnership-building to ensure financial sustainability of the offering

• Carry out a variety of administrative, reporting, planning, monitoring, and logistical responsibilities linked to the project

About You

To be our Legal Manager, Legal Service for Independent Media, you will likely have:

• An LLB, with preference for a qualified lawyer or an advanced law degree

• At least five years’ experience working in the legal field, with prior experience in media law or related human rights matters, either in a law firm, media house or non-profit organisation

• Strong understanding of international standards on press freedom and/or the media law/policy landscape. Understanding of the legal needs of journalists and media outlets in the global south or Central/Eastern Europe/FSU an advantage

• Excellent project management and organisational skills including the ability to manage effectively multiple matters and projects in a fast-paced environment, with a high degree of creative and flexible thinking, and the ability to incorporate lessons learnt through pilot delivery

• Prior experience working on donor-funded projects is a plus

• Excellent research, drafting and analytical skills, with experience in training an advantage

• Excellent interpersonal skills – able to establish and maintain positive working relationships both internally and externally, with people from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds

• Resilience, ability to cope with high pressure and work environments and find solutions to problems when they arise – able to quickly understand complex information and communicate to non-experts
