Speech and Language UK works to give every child the skills they need to face the future with confidence. They are the UK’s leading charity for the 1.9 million children who struggle to talk and understand words. They provide tools and training in schools and nurseries across the UK. They run two “outstanding” special schools in Surrey and in Nottinghamshire for children with lifelong and complex speech, language and communication needs. They have set out an ambitious strategic plan detailing their plans to increase their scale and impact and the Director of Finance & IT will be critical to them achieving their goals.  

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the post will provide inspirational leadership to finance and the IT & Data teams.As well as providing excellent financial stewardship to the charity you will, as a key member of the SMT, develop and contribute to the overall strategy and ensure that the organisation is using technology as effectively as possible and support transformational change in all areas.  

Key deliverables will include 

• Providing strategic insight on finance and IT to the SMT and Board of Trustees.

• Monitoring progress against the financial strategy and agreed budgets and consulting with the SMT on a regular basis, to discuss variances and give early warning of challenges. 

• Maintaining and continuing to strengthen robust business processes,systems and controls in relation to transactional services.

• Producing financial statements and the management of the year-end and audit process.

• Ensuring that all reports and financial returns to external bodies such as the Charity Commission, Companies House, HMRC etc. are completed accurately and promptly.

• Ensuring that the partnership between the central finance team and budget managers in national teams and schools is collaborative and productive.

You will be a CCAB qualified accountant with proven leadership skills and a deep understanding of charity accounting. You must be confident with financial planningand be capable of developing and implementing policies, systems and processes. An ability to build sustainable relationships across the organisation, with the SMT, the board and external stakeholders is essential.

About the opportunity

The Chair of the Diocesan and Cathedral Safeguarding Advisory Panel (DCSAP) is an extremely important and highly influential role at the Diocese, as you will independently guide, advise and challenge the Diocese and Canterbury Cathedral to ensure that their safeguarding policies, procedures and practices adhere to national and statutory safeguarding requirements.

Acting with impartiality and independence, you will provide effective leadership to the panel by encouraging independent thought and supporting and challenging where necessary, to ensure effective safeguarding responsibilities for children and vulnerable adults are maintained within the Cathedral and throughout the Diocese.

Regularly reviewing the progress of the DCSAP’s annual work programme, you will also contribute to the diocesan and cathedral safeguarding strategy and its annual progress review.

Taking responsibility for scrutinising the Church's responses to safeguarding concerns, you will advise on the diocesan/cathedral response to case lessons learned reviews, proposing adjustments to policies and practices where necessary.

Perhaps with a background in social services, a local authority, the police or in safeguarding children, you should have a strong understanding of the statutory requirements relating to safeguarding, including the Children Act, Care Act, Working Together to Safeguard Children, and relevant criminal justice frameworks.

A natural leader with experience of chairing governance or multi-agency panels, you should have the ability to lead structured discussions and reach consensus, being able to act impartially and independently and offer objective advice and challenge. To ensure impartiality, you must not hold any other role within the diocese.

With outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, you should be capable of presenting safeguarding issues clearly to senior leaders and stakeholders, whilst having the ability to influence safeguarding strategy and policy, implementing improvements based on case reviews and best practices. 

Previous experience in a faith-based or voluntary setting with safeguarding responsibilities or experience working with statutory safeguarding partners (perhaps local authorities or the police) would be desirable.

AfID is recruiting on behalf of a leading specialist in international NGO grant audit services for development donors such as the UN and the World Bank. Assignments would suit experienced qualified audit professionals with grant audit / management experience, ideally in a not-for-profit/ international development context

Role overview.

Complete international grant expenditure audits for a diverse range of projects (grant recipients) funded by international donor institutions ranging from emergency aid, to long term development in areas such as agriculture, health or infrastructure or technical research. Assignments are 1-3 weeks in length and based across the European mainland and the developing world. These are offered on an assignment by assignment basis, one to two months in advance.

Contractors can be based outside the UK 

Requirements

• Qualified ACA / ACCA or equivalent – 5+ years post qualified experience
• Grant management and audit and reporting experience with international institutions. Preference given to individuals that have worked on UN or EC grant assurance assignments
• Diplomacy and cultural sensitivity while working with a hugely diverse range of clients and beneficiaries
• A real interest in international development and associated funding structures
• Ideally but not essential fluency in a second language such as Spanish, German, French, Arabic & Portugese
• Excellent communication, report writing and presentation skills in English.

Overview of the role

Working with the Board of Trustees, members of the clergy and parishes, the CEO will be responsible for shaping and delivering the strategic vision of the charity in its mission to support adults and children in need.

Your role will involve responsibility for:

Leadership – to be visionary in the charity’s strategic development in line with the values and ethos of the charity

Governance – to take overall responsibility for the legal, risk, statutory and regulatory requirements of the charity

Strategy – to work with the Trustees, develop and deliver the strategic plan with responsibility for the continued development of Caritas across the Diocese of Leeds

Financial and Human Resource Management

Operational Efficiency including the lead role for the regulated services with Ofsted and CQC.

This position will play a pivotal role in ensuring ClientEarth's ability to continue driving its mission of environmental protection and policy advocacy. By securing both restricted and unrestricted funding, the Director of Development will directly contribute to the organization’s capacity to expand its initiatives, advance its legal and policy work, and maintain long-term financial sustainability.

Meet your Manager

In this role you will be line managed by our CEO, Laura Clarke. Laura joined ClientEarth in September 2022, after two decades in public policy, and in diplomatic roles across Africa, Asia and Europe.  Prior to joining ClientEarth Laura was British High Commissioner to New Zealand, and Governor of the Pitcairn Islands, from 2018 – 2022.

Main Duties

• Collaborate with the CEO, Associate Director of Development, and income heads to oversee the implementation the implement the Global Fundraising Strategy
• Collaborate with the Associate Director and Heads of Development to implement donor cultivation and retention plans
• With the CEO, the postholder will develop appropriate annual income targets in line with our Global Fundraising Strategy and in consultation with the Associate Director and all heads of income

Role requirements

• Extensive and proven senior experience in fundraising for a charity, NGO, or private/public entity
• Proven experience managing international teams of 10+ staff members across multiple borders
