• As part of our flexible working policy, you will be free to work remotely for the majority of your time if you prefer. However, you will need to be able to be in London when required for events and in person meetings with partners and trustees, team planning days and other duties as part of our senior management team. This will be approximately two or three days per month on average and you will need to cover the cost of your travel.

The role

This key leadership role is at the core of a very successful and ambitious directorate, one that has seen some wonderful achievements across all income streams. This includes award-winning partnerships from the corporate sector, with partners including McDonalds, KPMG and The Premier League, in addition to a fantastic array of trusts and foundations, and strategic relationships with national bodies such as Arts Council of England and the Department of Education.

The Director of Development will continue our impressive growth trajectory and inspire a team of talented and ambitious fundraisers to success. You will work closely with the CEO and fellow members of the Senior Leadership Team, as well as being a key contact for delivery colleagues and programme leads.

About you

You will be an experienced and compelling leader, someone who can demonstrate a successful track record building and delivering fundraising strategies. You will need to show success in achieving income growth, and be experienced across several income streams, including managing strategic partnerships from the corporate world, working strategically with national bodies (e.g. Arts Council) and a deep understanding of fundraising campaigns. You will have exceptional communication skills across all audiences, including working at board level, and have an excellent understanding of financial planning and reporting. You will be a natural leader, who can engage, motivate and inspire the development department, and play a key part in building a strong and inclusive organisational culture, as part of our ED&I commitments.

The position will provide leadership on all ZSL fundraising including efforts focused on corporate, philanthropic, institutional and public funding, and will be responsible for building and nurturing a high-performing fundraising team, as well as embedding a strong culture of philanthropy across the organisation.

The successful candidate will also play a key part in bringing a range of exciting projects to life, including a Centre for British Species Recovery, a Nature Campus as part of the redevelopment of the London Zoo site, new scientific facilities, and a range of ambitious conservation programmes in the UK and around the world.

The ideal candidate will bring an innovative approach and track record of driving growth and fundraising transformation at leadership level. They will have extensive experience of people change management and of fundraising experience in a large and diverse organisation. They will also have a track record of developing high value campaigns and of establishing strong relationships with major donors and philanthropists, corporates, government bodies, trusts and key supporters.

Knowledge of the context in which ZSL operates and the challenges and opportunities presented to the conservation and science sectors will be essential.

Summary

The newly scoped CEO role in our vision-focussed charity is one of many challenges. About Us

The Upper Room (TUR) works with a wide range of financially and socially disadvantaged groups including homeless people, people with long-term mental health conditions, asylum-seekers, refugees and ex-offenders – helping them to improve their lives and become productive members of society. Central to our offering is our UR4Meals service, providing free, home-cooked food to people who cannot afford to provide for themselves. We are also very proud of our UR4Driving programme, which supports people recently out of prison with free driving lessons in exchange for community volunteering. Gaining a driving licence greatly enhances their future employability prospects and helps break the cycle of re-offending. Additionally, our UR4Jobs project focusses on both client wellbeing and breaking down the many barriers to employment faced by disadvantaged people every day.

The role

Is leading the charity through its next phases of development as it prepares itself for year on year increases in demand with a focus on delivering the charity’s future resilience plan (Project 12/25). The CEO is accountable for overall charity performance (financial, operational, governance, compliance), team (paid and volunteer) support and development. Additionally, there are a wide range of community and external partner relationships to manage and develop. Ultimately this role sets the tone for the charity, one of both compassion and ambition to improve the lives of the people who need us. This is primarily an on-site role, with occasional opportunity to work flexibly.

About You

You have a stable CV that demonstrates you have built and led successful teams and enabled growth and/or transformation for your organisation – ideally in an equivalent charity/non-profit environment. You can evidence strong team leadership and results across a wide range of business functions which will need to include income generation, managing budgets and business operations. The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (Youth and Children’s Bands) is the UK’s leading brass band for children and teenagers.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the development and delivery of a 3-year train the trainer pilot programme in the chosen pilot locations in England or Scotland.

The pilot will train and equip local health care professionals, health promotion workers and local community workers with the knowledge and resources to promote breast awareness, breast screening and risk reduction messages in their own communities.

Supported by a public health development officer, train the trainer (1 based in England and 1 based in Scotland), who you’ll also line manage, you’ll lead on the development and delivery of the in-person programme, including marketing materials, resource packs and ongoing support for trainees. You’ll also identify opportunities, agree timescales and associated logistics for training delivery within the pilot areas.

About you

We’re looking for someone who is experienced in leading on the development and delivery of insightful and engaging workshops or public health focused projects, to a range of audiences from health or community-based organisations. The right candidate will have a good understanding of health inequalities, the challenges they present to health behaviours and outcomes, and be passionate about addressing these challenges. You’ll have strong communication and engagement skills and enjoy working independently and innovatively to develop successful partnerships with a range of organisations, communities and stakeholders.

Primary location of role and hybrid working

These roles involve significant travel across England (Westminster and Leicester) or Scotland (Glasgow and Lanarkshire).

Therefore, these posts can either be home based or office based at our London, or Glasgow offices (if within reasonable commuting distance).
