Summary
The newly scoped CEO role in our vision-focussed charity is one of many challenges. Despite having doubled its outputs in the last 2 years, the charity acknowledges there is still a great job of work to do to prepare itself for even greater demand in its services - without necessarily a proportionate increase in its budgets. This role is about leading and enabling the incredible team of people on to even greater levels of already-strong performance. So we're looking for an accomplished leader and not just a great manager. We're looking for someone who can lead from both the front - and from within. This will be someone who is as comfortable sitting and engaging with our beneficiaries - primarily homeless people and those with previous convictions, as they are creating and delivering highly polished, compelling public event and funder and stakeholder-focussed presentations. We are looking for someone who understands the balance of external and internal focus required to ensure both good governance and team wellbeing (as they work in often challenging circumstances) and the ambition to keep developing existing and new external partnerships. With a strong start to its ambitious Corporate Partnership programme, commercial and/or business experience is highly desirable as well as a proven track record in creating and optimising new funding channels.

We are seeking an outstanding individual to lead the development and delivery of business, commercial and enterprise activities within the South West Heritage Trust.
You will be a person with an excellent record of achievement at senior level within a charity or cultural organisation, and with an ability to build funding and other partnerships, motivate teams and manage complex projects. Working closely with the CEO and the Leadership Team, you will have a key role in fostering a fundraising culture that can ensure the Trust’s long-term ambitions and sustainability.
The Trust was created in 2014 as an independent charity to preserve and promote the heritage of Somerset and Devon. We work with many partners, including the principal local authorities of the two counties, to deliver wide-ranging heritage services. We reach thousands of people every year and in 2023 became a National Portfolio Organisation of Arts Council England.

Our Archive and Local Studies Services have centres in Taunton, Exeter and Barnstaple where we care for more than 10 million archives dating from the 8th century to the present day. Our Historic Environment Service supports local authorities, partners and the public by offering planning-related advice and information on Somerset’s archaeology and built heritage. It also looks after 450 acres of heritage landscapes. We provide learning opportunities for people of all ages. This newly-created role provides an outstanding opportunity to help the Trust realise its full potential as a charity that makes a difference − improving life chances, building prosperity and creating a better future for individuals and communities.
