Job description

World Jewish Relief created the Specialist Training and Employment Programme (STEP) for refugees in 2016 and today we are the largest provider of specialist employment support to refugees in the UK.

STEP provides a bespoke employment programme that addresses the complex barriers that refugees face when preparing for, and ultimately finding work in the UK. We now have an exciting opportunity for a Literacy and Numeracy Tutor with language skills to join the STEP team, working remotely from home, providing literacy and numeracy classes to refugee clients across the UK. You will be supporting women in group online settings and sessions, delivering workshops, and building language and maths confidence and skills. We are ideally looking for someone with Arabic, Dari, Pashto and/or Tigrinya language skills.

You will support with interactive curriculum design and lesson planning, as well as level assessment of clients, in order to prepare women clients for competitive employment through improving language and maths skills. You will work to a variety of performance targets based on the progression outcomes of clients such as improvement of numeracy and literacy level.

You will be responsible for:

  • Planning, preparing and delivering online lessons and workshops for groups of students
  • Carrying out assessments of students’ needs and creating a learning plan for each student
  • Planning schemes of work for literacy and numeracy sessions for mixed abilities, considering differentiation
  • Designing, producing and adapting teaching materials
  • Monitoring and recording students’ progress

You should have:

  • Experience of lesson planning and preparing schemes of work, with an ability to design interesting and creative online activities/resources that will engage learners
  • Experience assessing levels of learning
  • Experience of teaching literacy and numeracy to different client groups, either in a paid or voluntary capacity
  • Ability to manage a class with additional needs and working with learners who may have had little, or no, previous formal education
  • Experience of delivering workshops online
  • An understanding of the barriers faced by women refugees and their families
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and stakeholders.
  • A proactive, enthusiastic, flexible and open approach to engaging with colleagues and clients
  • Ability to prepare and deliver literacy and numeracy lessons from pre-entry to Entry Level 2
  • Fluent first-language skills in speaking Arabic, Dari/Pashto, Farsi and/or Tigrinya would be desirable

Benefits

We offer a range of benefits including:

  • 23 days holiday pro rata plus bank holidays.
  • Pension scheme – we contribute 5% to the World Jewish Relief pension scheme.
