This is an exciting time to join the NHM’s Development team, as we have launched a major capital campaign that is set to rejuvenate the Museum spaces and transform access to our collections. Alongside this we have secured investment from the UK Government to build a major new science and digitisation centre at the Thames Valley Science Park in collaboration with the University of Reading. The purpose-built centre will house much of the Museum's collection and will include laboratories, digitisation suites, collaborative research spaces, conservation labs and workspaces.

Job Summary
Development Group generates philanthropic and sponsorship income to help us create a Natural History Museum for the future – investing in capital development, attaining vital acquisitions for the collection, transforming our galleries, developing innovative exhibitions and undertaking ground-breaking scientific research on issues that affect us all.
The Museum is looking for an ambitious and self-motivated individual for the role of Philanthropy Manager. The role will contribute to our strategic priorities, working closely with the Senior Principal Gifts manager to cultivate and maintain relationships with new and existing funders. With opportunities to fundraise towards a diverse range of core and capital projects.
Working alongside an approachable and highly successful Philanthropy team, reporting into the Senior Principal Gifts manager, the role will support the development of our Principal giving strategy, building relationships with a portfolio of potential and existing funders engaging them through phone calls, meetings, written correspondence, events and by creating compelling proposals.
The role will provide substantial opportunity for professional development within a world-leading cultural organisation.
Main Responsibilities
Fundraising
· Raise income in line with agreed personal targets and KPI’s, contributing to the Philanthropy team’s current annual income target of £7m+.
· Cultivate a portfolio of major donor prospects in the UK and abroad at the six-figure gift level and support the Senior Principal Gifts Manager in the management of seven-figure gifts.
· Establish strong cross-Museum relationships to develop programme ideas in line with funders’ interests, and craft compelling cases for support.
· Work independently and in collaboration with the Senior Principal Gifts Manager, Head of Philanthropy and Director of Development to plan and implement creative strategies to increase philanthropic gifts at the seven-figure gift level.
· Actively solicit funding personally through bespoke cultivation plans and utilise senior stakeholders effectively when needed.
· Prepare written briefings for senior management for meetings with prospective donors as well as follow up documentation and correspondence.
· Ensure all required gift reporting is delivered to the highest standards, supporting the development of robust evaluation processes with colleagues where needed.
· Promote best practice in fundraising across the NHM.
Finance and Administration
· Work closely with Finance and project delivery colleagues to monitor incoming payments and ensure that donations are spent in line with funding agreements.
· Ensure full and timely records of all activity are kept on the database in adherence to set policies and procedures.
General
· Stay informed of key developments within the sector by monitoring government and third-sector policies and relevant publications.
· Attend evening and occasional weekend meetings and events, as required within the nature of the post.
· Assist with other duties that may be reasonably required.
Essential
· A demonstrable track-record in securing and managing gifts from high-networth-individuals, including research, crafting compelling proposals, and effective stewardship.
· Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with an ability to convey detailed information in a concise and engaging manner.
· Ability to establish productive relationships with a variety of funders, prospects and colleagues.
· Ability to work proactively and constructively with colleagues to develop high-quality project proposals.
· Ability to act as an ambassador for the Natural History Museum amongst a range of high-profile external contacts.
· Exceptional attention to detail and organisational skills.
· Ability to prioritise and meet regular deadlines whilst working under pressure.
Desirable
· Direct fundraising experience in the cultural/environmental sector with High-Net-Worth Individuals.
· Experience of working with senior stakeholders (Trustees, Directors and Senior Leadership teams).
· Experience working on capital or campaign fundraising.

The Smart Works service is delivered in London, Manchester, Stockport, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Newcastle, Reading and Leeds. In April 2022, Smart Works launched a Three-Year Plan that will see the charity double the number of women helped annually from 5,000 to 10,000 women a year. We are on track to achieve this by expanding the reach of our existing centres and opening new centres in areas of need including Bristol; set to open in early 2025.
About this role
Due to the significant growth phase, we require vital cornerstone funding from a new Major Gifts function that has just been established, to secure donations from high-net worth individuals, that will enable us to achieve our mission and help thousands of women to transform their lives.
The Philanthropy Manager is an exciting new role that provides an opportunity to build a new major gifts programme from scratch, raising £150,000 income by end of March 2025. Supported by the Director of Partnerships, you will work closely with the Board and our network of 750 volunteers, to develop a giving strategy that will engage and grow a new pool of crucial supporters for Smart Works.
The successful candidate will be responsible for building a new portfolio of major donors, including conducting prospect research, developing bespoke stewardship materials, and securing five-figure and six-figure repeat gifts.
We seek an excellent communicator, with significant experience in influencing, negotiating and exceeding set targets. Creativity, an understanding of women’s fashion, and knowledge of wealth circles would also be advantageous.
Smart Works is a collaborative environment, with dynamic teams and ambitious plans. It is also a rewarding place to work and a lot of fun, with valuable opportunities to attend nationwide fundraising events, expert leadership panel discussions, fashion sales and exclusive events.
The Fundraising and Partnerships team are based in London. This is a hybrid role, working from a London centre at least twice per week, with the opportunity to work across our North, West and South London centres. Some evening and weekend work is required to lead on philanthropic fundraising and support wider partnership team events.

The majority are also from minoritised communities and face intersectional barriers to employment: 32% are lone parents, 16% consider themselves to have a disability and 52 % are from an ethnic minority.

ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a thoughtful and dedicated leader to oversee the delivery of the Smart Works service across the UK, ensuring that the charity remains on track to achieve our current growth ambitions, and to also play a key role in leading delivery of the service as we move into our next strategic plan.
The Head of Programmes will drive innovation, build impactful partnerships with referral organisations and enable excellent decision making across all centres. The Head of Programmes will be the guardian of the Smart Works service as the charity grows, ensuring decision-making across the charity is always client-centric and every client has the best possible chance of job success.
The Head of Programmes will oversee the opening of new Smart Works centres. Project managing the opening of new centres will require exceptional people management and an ability to balance important small details, with an awareness of the bigger picture and wider strategy.
The Head of Programmes will also be responsible for leading org-wide projects focused on quality, that will allow Smart Works to ensure our offer continues to improve, so that more of our clients can move into employment.
This is an important leadership role within the charity, with the Head of Programmes regularly sharing insights and ideas with senior decision makers. They will provide valuable insight into the Smart Works service and trends within the wider employability support landscape.
Ideally, the successful candidate will be based at one of our London centres, and will travel to other Smart Works centres across the UK when needed. There may be occasional evening and weekend work as the successful candidate will be part of the wider centre team, supporting with networking and other key events.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Director of Programmes & Operations, the successful candidate will lead on a range of activities, including:
- Ensure a high quality, consistent service is delivered across the UK (both in-person and virtually).
- Drive innovation and support pilot projects that will enable the charity to evolve, improve and help more unemployed women secure work.
- Identify opportunities for digitisation of the service, to streamline our processes and allow us to grow our impact.
- Increase awareness of Smart Works by proactively identifying and nurturing partnerships with organisations who have the potential to refer to multiple Smart Works centres.
- Project manage the opening of new Smart Works centres, drawing on expertise of other staff across the Smart Works team to ensure the centre is set-up for success.
- Visit all centres across the UK to meet service delivery staff and understand opportunities for development and improvement.
- Supported by the Head of Data & Impact, track progress against KPIs, identify areas for development and, when needed, work closely with relevant staff to address shortfalls.
- Keep up to date with emerging trends within the employability support landscape, sharing relevant insights with the Director of Programmes & Operations and other relevant stakeholders.
- Line Management of staff within the Group Operations team.
- Champion inclusivity and ensure the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion strategy is woven into the day-to-day delivery of the Smart Works service and service delivery decision making.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

- Substantial experience delivering and leading charitable programmes, or comparative work, preferably on a national scale.
- Demonstrable experience of managing projects, driving innovation and implementing new initiatives, with experience delivering digital solutions.

- Proven track record of setting and monitoring targets and KPIs.
- Excellent relationship building skills, preferably with experience working across split sites.
- Experience working within employability support is desirable but not essential.

This role will have lead oversight of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB), working cross organisationally to create a dynamic, aspirational, and ambitious DEIB culture both within the SOR/COR and amongst SOR member workplaces.

With strong leadership and ambassadorial skills, this role will be instrumental in challenging discrimination and non-inclusive behaviours that may arise in the workplace.
DEIB is everyone's responsibility at the SOR/COR, but this role will be the subject matter expert, interpreting DEIB standards, best practice, and legislation. The role will help colleagues, leaders, officers, and members understand their collective and individual responsibilities.

Aquarius has been providing structured and targeted interventions to young people engaging in, at risk of substance misuse or affected by parental substance misuse for many years.
You will work on an outreach basis, including visiting schools & colleges, the Children and Families service, the YOT as well as other local community agencies. The role will involve:
- supporting young people away from engaging in substance misuse

- delivering 1-1 and some group work interventions
- targeted outreach to engage 'hard-to-reach' young people

This is an exciting opportunity to lead our South West team as the Head of Region, to maximise the impact of our funding and lead the strategic direction and management of our regional portfolio.You will be responsible for delivering our strategy It Starts with Community and the ambitions of our England Portfolio within the region.
Our South West region spans a diverse and complex geography, taking in coastal shores, eight cities and two national parks, with a complexity of deprivation in seemingly wealthy areas.
You will:
- be accountable for all aspects of strategic and operational management within the dedicated region, including local prioritisation, grant budget management, operational excellence, and key stakeholder management.
- You will be the key representative of The National Lottery Community Fund in the South West.
- You will oversee awards of approximately £21m per annum within the region alongside being responsible for a portfolio of over £80m grants in management.
- You will lead a team of 15 largely remotely-based, mobile team members in the region.
- You will be a core member of the England Leadership Team, maintaining strong relationships with other Regional Heads as well as with colleagues in the Central Funding and Partnership Teams.
We’re looking for someone who is passionate about making a difference through our funding, with a deep understanding of the communities we serve.
- You will have experience of building and leading teams and driving a culture of inclusion with an ability to coach, inspire, and empower people.
- Your ability to build and maintain excellent relationships with a diverse range of senior level internal and external stakeholders will be second to none
- You will have experience in creating connections and facilitating diverse stakeholder networks and you will be a confident communicator, comfortable in all environments.
- You will demonstrate an ability to work in an agile way, ensuring we are flexible and continue to improve in line with feedback and insights from customers and frontline staff.

Location: Exeter will be your contracted office but we operate hybrid working and this role requires frequent travel around the entire South West.

Essential criteria
As an experienced senior leader, you may, or may not come from a funding background but you may have significant experience of working with communities in the VCSE sector, and/or developing strategies involving stakeholders from different sectors and backgrounds, designed to deliver greater joint impact. You will need to be a good communicator, able to translate a vision into reality. The role will give you the flexibility to make the role your own and develop alongside the organisation; working collaboratively with the team to produce a broad portfolio of relationships and investments across the South West region.

- You are an inclusive leader, experienced in leading through change, with highly developed people skills, using your gravitas to enable others to achieve their full potential.
- You have the ability to offer guidance and direction through consistent and realistic core principles, setting priorities and deliverables based on an understanding of the organisational as well as external context
- Good decision-making skills, considering evidence, analysis and personal experience to take and mitigate risk as appropriate
- Implementing effective performance management, planning, risk analysis and governance resulting in greater impact and efficiency
- Developing and enhancing relationships with senior stakeholders across sectors, representing the Fund externally
- Experience in budgeting and data analysis, as well as developing and delivering annual and longer-term strategic operating plans
- Values-driven and passionate about the Fund’s purpose
