About the University of Leicester and Warwick Students’ Unions

Leicester and Warwick Unions represent over 17,000 and 30,000 students, respectively. As independent charities, they act as critical friends to their partner universities, serving as the bridge between their students and university decision-makers.

They are democratic bodies that empower students to facilitate the changes they want to see. They train and guide elected representatives who champion the needs of their peers, provide expert advice, and campaign on a variety of issues — from combatting sexual violence on campus to creating food banks and clothes swaps and improving academic standards. Following the pandemic and subsequent rise in the cost of living, their work is needed more than ever.

The Unions act as community hubs for their members. Leicester sits at the heart of student life within the city, helping students from all walks of life celebrate key milestones and cultural events.

About the roles

The trustee positions offer the chance to make a positive impact. Both Unions have secure foundations, positive working cultures and a passion to tackle the problems their students face. Leicester and Warwick Unions are developing new strategies and seek leaders who can work with young leaders — holding their executives to account, providing professional insights, and representing the charities to external stakeholders.

Who we are looking for

We are searching for individuals with financial and legal experience. Those with a financial background should be able to demonstrate an understanding of compliance and oversight, bring positive critique, and have a growth mindset.

Alternatively, legal trustees will contribute a critical perspective and legal insight to the board — understanding risk, scrutinising key decisions, and flagging potential issues.

We are looking for individuals with experience at senior or board level. You will be comfortable working alongside other senior leaders and have an approachable style — emotional intelligence and a coaching mentality are especially valued.

We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds, and we are particularly keen to hear from candidates from Black, Asian, and other ethnic communities, as well as female leaders. However, we will assess all applicants based on skills and fit.

The time commitment varies between Unions and can be discussed via a call. The commitment includes attendance at board meetings, sub-committee meetings, and strategic planning events. Board dates are provided well in advance, several engagements can be attended remotely, and reasonable travel costs can be reimbursed.
