British Society for Rheumatology (BSR) is a membership organisation that brings together expertise from across the rheumatology profession, harnessing a wide variety of experience and skills to ensure we’re supporting our members to the very best of our combined ability. Our mission is to support members to deliver the best care at all stages of the rheumatology care pathway, focusing on communication, transparency and collaboration.

Rheumatology Advances in Practice (RAP) is a fully Open Access journal that publishes quantitative and qualitative research not only from the field of rheumatology. The Editor-in-Chief plays a key role in providing leadership, vision and strategy.

Job Purpose
 
The Editor-in-Chief will be appointed by the BSR and the term of appointment will be for a five-year period. The Editor-in-Chief plays a key role in providing leadership, vision and strategy of the journal.

The Editor-in-Chief for Rheumatology Advances in Practice (RAP) will work with BSR to develop and produce a high-quality journal as well as establish its strategic direction. They will be involved in updating the BSR Board of Trustees and RAP Editorial Board as well as leading the social media presence of the journal. 
 
The Editor-in-Chief will have a general responsibility to the broader rheumatology, paediatric, primary care and allied health community in communicating clinical and scientific advances and standards, to promote their needs and aspirations by commissioning content and planning Special Issues that will enhance the field of research, care and support for these communities. 
 
The Editor-in-Chief will work with the Society and Publisher to ensure that it continues to meet its objectives and set strategic goals for the journal.  

The general strategic aims and objectives of the journal are:  

• Ensure robust ethical standards and high-quality peer review
• Grow quality and number of submissions and publications yearly
• Ensure international recognition and reach of this journal by publishing high quality scientific and clinical research from across the world, and maintaining an engaged international Editorial Board

The journal is an open access, go to resource for the Rheumatology community, with a scope that encompasses the wide range of disciplines involved in the field. We recently received an impressive first impact factor of 3.1 and we are excited to continue to grow the presence of the journal internationally. As the journal is fully online and open access, we have exciting opportunities to provide a multitude of publishing services for our authors, in line with the industry standards and experimenting with new ways of publishing. We listen to the voice of the authors, readers, reviewers and board members to understand their publishing needs and are excited to trial new projects. For example, we recently launched a new article type called an ‘Atlas Review’ with a unique offer of unlimited figures, allowing authors to illustrate their important discussions and not limiting the capabilities via text exclusively.

Quality and ethical standards
The Editor-in-Chief will ensure an appropriate balance of good quality articles, so the journal addresses the needs of the multidisciplinary rheumatology community. The Editor-in-Chief will oversee that the journal maintains the highest ethical and moral standards. The journal must be seen to be fair and unbiased towards individuals and provides a comprehensive and balanced view of the speciality. The journal will be a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and be committed to the highest ethical standards in journal publishing.

Conference attendance
The BSR, EULAR and ACR conferences provide an excellent opportunity to network with current and prospective authors, reviewers and Editorial Board members, as well as to commission new content for the journal and to provide social media updates. Conferences can also be used to arrange podcast and video interviews with authors, Board Members and colleagues). Delegate tickets to EULAR, the BSR AC and ACR will be covered by the British Society for Rheumatology and travel and hotel expenses will be covered as outlined in the budget.

Editorial support to the Editor-in-Chief
The Editor-in-Chief will receive day-to-day support for processing papers and managing peer review from the BSR in-house Editorial Office team, as well as support from contacts at Oxford University Press. Co-Editors, Associate Editors and wider Editorial Board also provide support and guidance to the Editor-in-Chief.  

The relationship with the British Society for Rheumatology 
The day-to-day contact with the BSR will be through the Editorial Office; however, the Editor-in-Chief will have several relationships as follows: 

• BSR Journal Committee

The BSR Journal Committee will review and supply any feedback about overall advice given by the Editorial Board on the content, quality, standards, promotion, and performance of the journal to the Editor-in-Chief. The Rheumatology Advances in Practice Journal committee is responsible for overseeing and approving the finances, scope and policies of Rheumatology. The committee ensure actions decided upon further the work of the Journal and its development within the Journal’s aims and scope The Editor will present at the BSR Annual Conference AGM when required. 

• BSR Board of Trustees, CEO and Senior Management Team

Advised by the BSR Senior Management Team, the BSR Board of Trustees approve the finances and strategy of the journal. Members of the BSR Senior Management Team attend the Journal Committee. The Editor-in-Chief is asked to attend the BSR Board of Trustees on an ad hoc basis to provide an update on strategy and delivery.  

• Rheumatology Editor-in-Chief

There is a transfer of papers model in place, so the Editors-in-Chief will have opportunity to collaborate with the Editor of Rheumatology to ensure the right papers are directed to the right journals by understanding the scope of each journal and the criteria. The journals share a Twitter page and marketing and promotional campaigns can be co-ordinated.

• Oxford University Press 

OUP publish the journal on behalf of the BSR. OUP provides a full publishing experience with expert teams who advise and support on matters related to production, marketing and law, publishing ethics and strategy. The publisher, BSR and the EiC work closely to ensure the journal strategy is bespoke for Rheumatology Advances in Practice to maintain the current community, build the readership and authorship, and align with the visions and values of BSR. The EiC will meet OUP contacts at the Journal Committee Meeting and strategy planning meetings, as the publisher highly values the knowledge and experience of the EiC. Day to day communication will be via the Editorial Office to ensure smooth running of journal procedures.  

Main responsibilities

• Work towards and guide the 5-year strategy for the journal
• Set strategic goals with the BSR and the publisher to apply for further indexing, and maintain or grow the Impact Factor
• Work with the BSR, publisher and Editorial Board to target and commission reviews, original articles and special issues, and curate a sponsored supplement timeline
• Ensure that the journal’s scope is international and is reflected in its content 
• Ensure the journal is produced to a high standard, and that it reflects the needs of the full spectrum of the rheumatology professional community
• Ensure rapid peer review with time to first decision within three weeks 
• Ensure the Editorial Board reflects not only the various subspecialties within rheumatology but also includes a global spread 
• Ensure that the journal is promoted online using a range of media to promote and raise awareness of the journal
• Participating in the digital offerings of the journal, such as hosting podcasts

Person Specification

1.  A PhD degree/ Doctor of Medicine, specialised in Rheumatology, with a clinical science background and a strong understanding of recent trends and developments 
2.  Demonstrable experience in an editorial role including, reviewer, editorial board member, associate editor or guest editor
3.  Adaptability to new publishing systems and software. Experience with the system, ScholarOne, would be beneficial to the role but is not a requirement as training can be provided

Due to continued growth, we are seeking a Corporate Partnerships Officer to support a small team in the effective coordination and administration of our medicines donation process and account management of our much valued corporate donor companies.

About the role

The postholder will play a key role in coordinating the donation of medicines from some of the largest UK and European pharmaceutical companies including Accord, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and GSK. This is a varied role where the postholder will have opportunities to work on both account management and processes, ultimately contributing to safe and effective donations of medical product.

-   Supporting in the day-to-day management of relationships with our corporate donors and acting as a daily liaison with some accounts

The Grants Administrator, will play a pivotal role in supporting the Head of Development & Programme Management in various critical functions. Your primary responsibilities revolve around fundraising activities, including the meticulous administration of grants and the drafting and reporting on grant proposals. Internally, you will liaise between teams, especially research, seeking their input into grant proposals, and working closely with the Finance Team to ensure alignment and accuracy in financial reporting for fundraising efforts. Additionally, the role is responsible for collecting evidence and data, crucial for comprehensive fundraising reports. So, it would be advantageous to have sound knowledge of terminology around grant making and basic finance administration.

This is a demanding role, with the need to ensure work is completed in a timely manner. You will be expected to have good experience using Excel (however this will be basic data inputting) and have previously used a grant making tool. The ideal candidate will have solid grants administration experience, who has an interest in climate change and is able to think on their feet.

Role Duties:
* Pro-active approach and the ability to research opportunities and develop engagement strategies (under the direction and guidance of Head of Development).
* Provide support in the scoping and mapping of funders and helping to build and establish smart engagement opportunities.
* Maintain and update the fund-raising database and calendar to track upcoming fundraising opportunities, proposal and reporting deadlines.

FUNCTION: Delivering our successful mentoring programmes in Tyne & Wear, Tees Valley and across the wider NE area.

WHERE THE ROLE FITS: Reporting to: North Senior Network Manager

WHAT WE DO

Young people from lower income families are 40% less likely to go to University than wealthier peers (Dept for Education, 2020) which can have a lifelong impact on earning potential. Covid-19 has deepened inequalities (Social Mobility Foundation, 2022) and negatively impacted on young people's wellbeing (GirlGuiding, 2020). We believe that no girls should have their futures limited by their gender, sex, ethnicity, background, or parental income and they should be supported to realise their ambitions, to discover their self-worth, and to develop their capacity to shape their world and their futures.

We work in communities of least advantage across England to deliver two core programmes to achieve this vision. Through our mentoring programme we connect 14-19 year old girls with a mentor and a wider network of role models who are women and deliver opportunities which help them to build life skills and nurture their ambitions. Based on the idea that 'you can't be what you can't see', our mentors often help girls to broaden their horizons and create a more positive vision of their futures. After the programme, the mentees can join a free, lifelong network of support - our Ambassador Community, which offers further opportunities to reach their goals, build their confidence and to share their voices and experiences.

Our programmes help girls and young women to develop the knowledge, skills, self-belief and opportunities to thrive, and to be supported as part of a network that champions them and ensures their voices are heard.

THE ROLE

This is an exciting role joining a Programme Team of 15 staff based throughout the UK. There is a small team of 3 based in the North East. You will work closely and collaborate with the other Network Managers and share some priorities across the region, working to develop the region as a whole. This is a role reliant on good relationships. 70-80% of the role is about relationship building (with schools, mentors and partners), coordination and the tracking/ administration of those relationships. Only 15-20% of the role is direct delivery with the girls in the region.

Mentoring programme

• Manage overall success of the cohorts (groups of mentees and mentors) in your region, including coordinating and administering events and communications for cohorts in your area.
• Deliver engaging on-boarding sessions for mentees
• Design and deliver events and workshops for mentees
• Deliver matching of mentees and mentors at in-person events or virtually
• Work with the wider programme team to train mentors
• Support mentors once matched through regular check-ins, monthly emails and ad-hoc conversations
• Collect data to track the progress, and impact of, mentoring relationships
• Support mentors with safeguarding concerns, following The Girls’ Network process in line with our child protection policy
• Develop effective relationships with schools, on-boarding, supporting and retaining the partnerships

We are looking for a passionate and experienced fundraiser to work alongside a talented team in securing significant, multi-year funding from Lottery and Statutory sources Alongside securing new funding, you will lead on managing existing projects and so excellent account management skills are essential.

RNIB’s Statutory and Lottery Partnerships team has a wealth of experience in securing 6 and 7 figure grants from across Lottery, Statutory and EU bodies, but we know we can achieve more. We want to build sustainable, ambitious partnerships with our funders to create a truly holistic relationship which is two way in its offer. RNIB is at a pivotal moment, and we are looking for someone who will bring energy, enthusiasm and a desire to change the world for blind and partially sighted people.

You will lead and collaborate on applications to Statutory and Lottery bodies across the UK, and nurture and develop relationships both with external funders and key internal stakeholders. You’ll use your strong account management skills to proactively build and seek opportunities to raise the profile of RNIB and deepen the connection between funders and the organisation. You’ll apply creativity to the way we talk about funded projects internally and externally including building a package of external communications to raise awareness of the work we do.

Alongside the development of new proposals, you will manage a portfolio of existing funded projects; working across a range of directorates within RNIB to provide reports and updates to funders whilst maintaining strong relationships to support a variety of both new and existing projects and services.

What you’ll need

You will have strong experience of Statutory and/or Lottery fundraising and working with others to meet or exceed team income and activity targets.

You will be confident in managing complex relationships with external and internal contacts, such as government agencies, Lottery distribution bodies and EU agencies, colleagues, senior staff and other influential stakeholders.

You will be comfortable managing your own workload and portfolio of funding applications and funded projects, within an experienced fundraising team. Supporting others when required to achieve the joint target.

You will have excellent relationship management skills to nurture the relationships. Along with strong influencing and negotiation skills, and the ability to form successful working relationships with colleagues from different functions and teams with potentially conflicting priorities.

This position can be worked on a flexible basis from anywhere in the UK as a homebased position.

Fowler’s Syndrome UK (Registered Charity number 1196903) is a unique patient and clinician led charity that works to raise awareness, promote education and encourage research into the debilitating bladder condition Fowler’s Syndrome. The condition solely affects women and Fowler’s Syndrome UK (FSUK) is the only charity in the world to directly support women with this condition.

Fowler’s syndrome is a life changing and currently almost untreatable condition, affecting up to 20,000 women in the UK. It  causes full or partial urinary retention and solely affects women*, meaning they have problems passing urine due to a difficulty in relaxing the urinary sphincter. The peak age of onset is 26. It was first described by Professor Clare Fowler, Emeritus professor of Uro-Neurology at UCLh, and FSUK’s patron, in 1985.

We estimate that there are in excess of 20,000 women in the UK suffering from, but not necessarily diagnosed with, the condition, because of the lack of knowledge about Fowler’s Syndrome both from a patient and clinician perspective.

85% of women with Fowler’s Syndrome say the condition has had a severe or devastating impact on their life.

75% of those with FS have been told their urinary symptoms are due to anxiety or ‘all in their head’

There is low awareness of the condition among the medical community outside of specialist hospitals. Only an estimated 30% of GPs are aware of Fowler’s Syndrome. Once diagnosed, there are few resources available for patients and limited treatment options. Many women feel alone and unsupported.

Our mission is to provide resources, promote education and facilitate research into Fowler’s syndrome; so women with the condition have stigma free access to a timely diagnosis, suitable and effective treatment options, care and psychological support.

The Role: Administrator

The administrator’s role is to support the CEO in the daily management of the charity. This will include administration, delivering resources, comms including social media and website, outreach and events, fundraising and research. About this key role

Our successful candidate will focus on supporting the team in the day-to-day delivery of our service providing tailored accommodation support to men in custody and under probation supervision in Yorkshire and Humber.  As well as providing full administrative and office management support to ensure the most effective delivery of the service, you will provide information and analyse reports and have full responsibility for duties such as data entry and processing, coordinating, managing and allocating referrals, signposting to other pathways, scanning, and internal enquiries.

We will also rely on you to process sensitive and confidential data on digital systems and maintain records, to ensure the timely and accurate distribution of information throughout the team, and to have responsibility for the maintenance records and logs of the premises and equipment.  Managing data systems and developing effective methods of data processing, plus providing coaching and mentoring support to volunteers are also key aspects of the role.

Home-Start is committed to promoting the welfare of families with young children to enable them to have the best start in life. We are recruiting a Family Support Coordinator to help us provide targeted, specialised support to families in Barnet, who could be struggling with any of a range of issues. This includes those with children under the age of 5, expecting parents who may be experiencing poor mental health or families with complex circumstances with children up to the age of 19.

Our Coordinators are integral members of the Home-Start team, as well as wider teams of professionals from universal and specialist services to provide a coordinated response to families’ needs. They assess need and carefully match volunteers with families. This may include instigating Early Help assessments and attending case planning meetings. 

Coordinators work with their own volunteer team, ensuring they are supported and fully trained to achieve the best outcomes for families and, in particular, the children. Coordinators work with families in their own home. They are skilled in recognising and responding to safeguarding concerns, be apt in completing strengths-based assessments and conversations. They also have a deep understanding of the issues families can face and the link with childhood development and difficulties they may experience later in life.

The post holder will build on our existing work and our relationships in Barnet, to deliver a volunteer-led home-visiting service and related activities to local families. This will require a good working knowledge of the borough, community partners and agencies. You will ideally be co-located in one of the community centres or community venues but will be required to travel around the borough regularly. Coordinators will allso participate in weekly family groups in each borough, based in the children's centres and family hubs.

We are recruiting a Coordinator for Barnet to cover a period of secondment until 31st March 2025. However, there may be an opportunity for this to be extended further subject to funding. The work is largely field-based, but will require regular days in the office which is in Finchley, Barnet.
