Numeracy, like literacy, is a core life skill. Yet many children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, have difficulties with maths.
Number Champions trains volunteer Numeracy Supporters to use games and other creative activities in one-to-one sessions to help children acquire interest, confidence, and skills in maths. We work with school years 2 and 3 (ages six to eight) as research shows that early intervention is most effective. Overcoming “the maths barrier” can put the child back on track to learn in classroom lessons and to achieve their educational potential.
Sessions are weekly, in school during school hours. You will work with the same child for the full school year so that you can build a friendly and positive learning environment. Volunteers typically work with three children in consecutive half hour sessions, but if you have limited time you can work with two children only.
We have experienced teachers volunteering with us as “Mentors” to train our Numeracy Supporters and to give them advice and support through the year. At your training, you will be given a kit of concrete materials and shown how to use them to help children to learn. We will also introduce you to our extensive online library of teaching resources.
Why volunteer?
- You will be helping children in your local community.
- You will meet new people.
- You will develop your interpersonal and coaching skills.
- Children of six to eight are (generally) fun!
Skills and experience
- You will have the interpersonal skills to work with young children and the enthusiasm to help them achieve their potential.
- You will be creative in finding different ways to help a child understand.
- At the age we work with, maths is mainly adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with numbers to 100 or 1,000; you will be confident with this level of arithmetic.
- You will be able to commit to attend most weekly sessions over the school year.
We partner with over 30 schools across London, and we will try to place you with a local school. We do a DBS check for all volunteers.
We support the wide diversity of London children, and we welcome volunteers from all backgrounds, including those with disabilities.
