Job description

We require all staff to work a minimum of 2 days per week on average, working in-person, in line with our hybrid working framework. However, we are also open to discuss condensed working, or be managed in line with a flexible working request for this role. The person will also be expected to take part in an out-of-hours rota with the broader external affairs team. 

The Health Foundation is an independent charitable organisation working to build a healthier UK.

Health is never far from the headlines. We are looking for an experienced media manager to help us continue to secure high-profile media coverage. This includes having a focus on proactively contacting journalists to pitch stories, managing media bids, and working closely with colleagues focusing on key policy issues to ensure press activity supports wider communications plans and helps deliver impact.  

To be successful in the role of Media Manager, you will have: 

  • significant experience working within an influential press office, including a record of proactively securing top-tier coverage (essential) 
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills - capable of writing high-quality press releases, comments, briefings, and other written materials (essential) 
  • the ability to build strong relationships with senior internal and external colleagues in a short period of time (essential) 
  • lead projects with other communications disciplines, especially public affairs (highly desirable), and project manage launches of key reports.
  • experience of working on issues relating to in health inequalities, public health, and/or social affairs (highly desirable)

As part of the interview process, an applicant will be asked to draft a press release and create a brief plan for launching a recent Health Foundation report. The applicant will need to share these documents with us prior to the interview. 

During the interview, the applicant will have 3-5 minutes to discuss their press release and launch plan for the report. We will provide the applicant with the questions that will be asked during the interview in advance.
